rellla: i guess no, because how vdpau works you will almost always have a different rgba_surface
<rellla>
jemk: but isn't current data equal to the previous data if nothing has changed? i try to find a way to only update the osd layer, when we have a change in the data...
foudubassan has joined #linux-sunxi
<jemk>
rellla: everything gets redrawn every frame, even if nothing (or only the video layer) changed, thats how vdpau works
<rellla>
jemk: hm. the dirty area thing only redraws the part of the rect, that is dirty?
<jemk>
rellla: most players draw the osd to a seperate Output(or Bitmap)Surface and copy it to every frame OutputSurface, that could be optimized by detecting this and not copying it, and instead showing the seperate OutputSurface as top layer
<jemk>
rellla: the dirty area mostly prevents clearing the whole surface
<jemk>
*clearing before redraw
<rellla>
jemk: we do show the osd on a separate top layer, don't we?
<jemk>
rellla: yes, we do, but we still copy it each frame

what is the resource intensive part? the ioctls in the presentation queue, or the rgba_blit?
<jemk>
rellla: the rgba_blit, it uses g2d and doesn't use much cpu, but it takes time and memory bandwidth
pekka20 has quit [Quit: WeeChat 1.0.1]

jemk: so is it possible at all to let rgba_render_surface check, if the surface has changed? or has the blit to be done anyway. i'm a little bit confused :p
<jemk>
rellla: depends, if it's only a single blit to the target you could show the source on the layer instead of copying it to the target

I'm experimenting with the mainline kernel on a BPi-R1 board, is is booting up fine and with some additional patches, the switch is also working, but i'm unable to turn the sata power on..
<SQUelcher>
On sunxi-uboot, you can enable it with a certain option in the .fex file, but i'm unable to translate it to mainline uboot
<forkit1>
is the A20 big endian or little endian?
<xomb>
.fex is needed in building the uboot?
<forkit1>
xomb: no
<xomb>
but can be included?

idk. Maybe in sunxi-uboot

i have a .fex file for my board but i didn't find a way to use it.

you compile it to script.bin and put script.bin in the first vfat partition on the sdcard.

I honestly think the hardware is broken - I get a whole slew of errors when doing anything with eth0
<ssvb>
does the vendor provide any kind of validation image?
<forkit1>
im curretly soldring some wires to a ethernet switch in MII mode to try to troubleshoot what is going on.
<forkit1>
Yep, and it doesnt work either.
<ssvb>
if this is lime2, then it should work fine
<forkit1>
its basically a lime2 with the USB, power reg, and ethernet seperated out by bus.
<ssvb>
if it is something that is kinda supposed to be like lime2, then you need to be careful with the selection of the right fex and/or dtb files
plaes has quit [Ping timeout: 248 seconds]

true, Im working with mainline, so I need to get the correct dtb file (vendor doesnt supply any). Debian's mainline kernel boots and 90% works, except the ethernet, and using Lime2's dtb causes bootloops.
premoboss has joined #linux-sunxi
<forkit1>
is there a way to go from dtb->dte->dtb?
FDCX_ has joined #linux-sunxi
<ssvb>
forkit1: yes, to some extent (some cosmetic/formatting information is lost on the dts->dtb->dts roundtrip) but you don't need to do this
dev1990 has joined #linux-sunxi
<ssvb>
forkit1: you can find the lime2 dts file in the linux kernel sources
<forkit1>
is it olimex supplied or user supplied? I might need to edit for A20SOM
<ssvb>
but the vendor really needs to provide some sort of the hardware description information, at least via a properly working fex file
<ssvb>
if olimex is your hardware vendor, then you may try to ask in the #olimex channel

Hi! Aside from enabling "Support for frame buffer devices" and "Simple framebuffer support" in the Kernel configuration, is there something else to do, to get Simple Frambuffer working on mainline? Like for example, some U-Boot settings in the boot.cmd/boot.src file?
<silentcreek>
I'm running Kernel 4.0.0 and U-Boot 2015.04. U-Boot HDMI output works fine, but I don't see any output after loading the Kernel (it boots fine though - I can log in via ssh and everything works as expected).
<ssvb>
silentcreek: maybe you want "Framebuffer Console support" too (this seems to be a rather popular problem)
<ssvb>
maybe mripard_ could consider adding this information to the mainline kernel wiki page :-)
<silentcreek>
If I have the info, I'm also willing to edit the wiki ;)
<ssvb>
sure you can :-)
<atsampson>
ssvb: the next question after that tends to be about having console=tty1 rather than console=/dev/ttyS0 in the boot args...
<ssvb>
right
<silentcreek>
I'm also thinking about how the wiki could be updated and cleaned up a bit. There are quite a few places or passages where I know the information is outdated, insufficient or conflicting with other wiki contents. It's just that I stumble about these contents, but I don't have all the info (or I'm just not sure) to update it. However, that's a bigger project - not for tonight.
<mripard_>
jackdaniel: send it to the ml
<mripard_>
ssvb: anyone can edit the wiki :)
gianMOD has joined #linux-sunxi
<ssvb>
mripard_: sure, but it's up to you to at least pick the default config options for sunxi :-) and the popular config tweak recommendations are also very much related
gianMOD has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<ssvb>
nobody wants to convert the basic kernel compilation/usage instructions in the wiki into an unwieldy mess, so you have the privilege to take care of it
<mripard_>
ssvb: the thing is, a configuration is very personal
<mripard_>
we could enable simplefb
<mripard_>
but whether we want the framebuffer console is very debatable
a1d3s558 has joined #linux-sunxi
<silentcreek>
mripard: I don't think it's neccessary to enable it by default, as long as people can find the info on how to enable it on the wiki. At the moment it doesn't seem complete, so after I recompiled my kernel and verified the steps, I will update the wiki. And don't get me wrong, this is not a complaint. I'm very grateful for all the work you and other community members put into this.
a1d3s|away has quit [Quit: Serverwechsel]
<mripard_>
silentcreek: still, ssvb is right and people tend to rant more about the missing options, but never actually post anything to enable them
<silentcreek>
I think it's quite amazing to see how far mainline support has come and how well it runs on sunxi devices (well, I can only speak for A20). Especially if you look at other cheap SoCs where people are stuck with old and/or horribly hacked kernels, it's nice to know that with sunxi suport in mainline, you can keep your devices up to date with little effort.
ricardocrudo has joined #linux-sunxi
xomb has joined #linux-sunxi
<ssvb>
mripard_: yeah, I had a feeling that you personally don't like the framebuffer console for whatever reason and that this could be the reason why it is still missing in the wiki page
<ssvb>
the point is that we don't want to convert the wiki page into a freaking encyclopedia about kernel configuration
<ssvb>
but the wiki page is still useful for addressing some of the most popular questions/pitfalls
<mripard_>
ssvb: no, not really
<mripard_>
but I'd really prefer to have people actually get what the configuration is about
<mripard_>
and why "I don't have anything on the display" is normal when you don't have anything that display something
<mripard_>
of course I don't want it to become an encyclopedia
<mripard_>
but it really shouldn't be
