<oliv3r> but because it wasn't constantly being charged to full, it would deplete normally slowly
<oliv3r> to charge it, reseat the battery
<oliv3r> annoying, but made it last enormously long
<oliv3r> i also bought the 9 cell 'extended charge' battery 8 years or so ago; still at 80%
<oliv3r> but yeah, telling your laptop NOT to constantly charge, or removing the battery (with 40% charge in it) is the best way to keep a battery good
<oliv3r> storing it cool is also better
<oliv3r> 9 cell battery; STILL FOR SALE today :)

<brain_> Glad im not the only one who still hordes Thinkpads! I have a stack of them here :) mostly T42's I buy in bulk.
<brain_> you just cannot kill them, and when they DO fail, its usually the GPU, I have a IR rework station so a quick reflow brings them right back.

<brain_> Oh yea if you want that liquid damage repair to last, i'd soak the board in 100% Acetone and scrub the hell out of it, just be careful of the plastic parts obviously.

<brain_> what parts do you need? I have a couple parts ones sitting here. I buy them in bulk, repair them and refurb. I kept 4 for myself that are fully functional and a couple for spares that have too much damage to the board. Reason I like thee thinkpads is they are very cheap, reliable, and they didnt ditch the parallel port which I actually use quite often.

<brain_> The impurities in the water, distilled or not are going to cause shorts down the line at some point. acetone displaces ALL traces of liquid and impurities like iron,zinc, etc that cause the shorts that happen later. the initial cleaning with alcohol is usually only a temporary solution. <brain_> I get them in lots on ebay, say 15-20 a time and the initial investment is back just by making a few working units. I check the descriptioons carefully and try to stick to hardware issues. I very rarely get a cracked screen but some people will describe bad lcd's alot i;ve noticed...its usually the GPU that failed when I inspect them...yep they are CHEAP and reliable and perfect for someone with no laptop.
