leaving the stuff out of CONFIG_MALI_EXPERT seems to allow me to compile just fine, and the kernel boots. modprobe of the resulting module gives me an error stating that the platform data is not specified. It's a start though

sjoerd: all good, got /dev/mali0 with your kernel, and a functional rtc to boot. didn't realize the CB2 had two rtcs. ;) now to get userspace mali bits going and get a usb wifi solution since the built-in isn't working yet. thanks for all the help
