<zerxes>
Speaking of replication. Is it possible to add nodes to a sort of group and set the replication-factor to 1 copy per group?
<zerxes>
I have like 40-50 servers spread over 10 locations/datacenters in the world. Would be nice to have each file present atleast in each datacenter so that when one node needs a file it can always be fetched locally
<aschmahmann[m]>
zerxes: I think you should be able to accomplish this with IPFS Cluster. Checkout https://cluster.ipfs.io/documentation/configuration/ and see how you can set the replication factor for pinned data.
<zerxes>
I peeked at it but from what I can find I can only configure how many peers that should pin an item, not which peers or some kind of group of peers?
<olizilla[m]>
zerxes: you can have clusters of clusters
<olizilla[m]>
you could make a cluster per dc with replication factor of 1, then add each cluster as a node to a cluster with a replication factor of 10

<graylan[m]>
moooooooo sweet! we need more NZ nodes.. NZ govt wants to block IPFS!
<moooooooo>
really ?
<moooooooo>
why ?
<graylan[m]>
if you need any help with deploy decentralized video i have experience
<moooooooo>
why blocking that is.. ?
<graylan[m]>
I guess they don't like the freedom IPFS provides. Like spain. They blocked centralized ipfs front end DTUBE..
<graylan[m]>
and whats interesting they did this at the same exact time as AUS....
<graylan[m]>
So everyone in NZ run an IPFS node right now. they cannot stop you ;)
<moooooooo>
i had ipfs working here when i first heard of it. i have Gb fibre internet and have an ethereum node running and had also an early ipfs node too. Maybe i'll get the ipfs node back up.
<graylan[m]>
It's silly because they blocked DTube, but we have 20 other front ends they didn't block and more that pop up every day. So they only blocked the most popular and most centralized aspect of DTube...
<moooooooo>
well don't get me started about Oz (AUS) as i'm from there, and the election result….meh….but here in NZ the internet is stellar.
<graylan[m]>
So a lesson to all DAPP devs. Remember centralized front ends are the first to be blocked by the GOVT
<moooooooo>
yeah but freenet still works
<moooooooo>
true
<moooooooo>
also i've been playing with zerotier. now *that* is pretty cool.
<graylan[m]>
and D.Tube (centralized front end project) didn't do anything wrong. they have strict content rules. someone uploaded christ church and they deleted the link from their front end. even still. They blocked it. They didn't block facebook where the video still is being shared today. Interesting huh? take down the lil guys.
<moooooooo>
i havent heard of d.tube sorry even tho i've been developing on the internet since 1995 (showing my age) ok. here in NZ it's apparently a crime to d/l his manifesto btw
<graylan[m]>
But yeah i think we should be moving to pure blockchain + ipfs setups, have failover nodes. No govt can really block this unless they change the way the internet works and limit access to millions of people.
<graylan[m]>
moooooooo lol yeah, the actions by your govt will only radicalize more people on both sides of the isle.
<graylan[m]>
Freedom of Speech will never die. NZ and AUS should fight for it.
<moooooooo>
i saw a good presentation here in NZ wrt blockchain in general but referencing offline storage and when i saw that i thought that ipfs would be a good fit
<graylan[m]>
Yeah IPFS works well. if you want to setup blockchain + ipfs locally you can do so without d.tube at all.. so your govt cannot stop access to DTube... You can just upload like how i said, with failover nodes
<moooooooo>
ppl in Oz only vote because they have to and well let's not go there. Life's too short hehe
