<makeworld>
Can someone explain what the `api` and `repo.lock` files do in the `.ipfs` directory?
<makeworld>
And what deleting will do?
<makeworld>
My understanding is that the api file is for telling the command line to use the API, and so if it's not there some commands will run without contacting the API

<makeworld>
It's just I left my IPFS directory, then reinstalled it, and ran some configuration scripts

<makeworld>
But all my IPFS configuration failed because of those two things
<makeworld>
Deleting those two files worked fine, but I'm wary of doing that in production
<makeworld>
Tagging me if anyone knows the answer would be very helpful

<Stebalien>
makeworld: you are correct. The `api` file tells apps where to contact the daemon and the `repo.lock` file says taht something is using the repo.
<Stebalien>
However, if you're running a recent go-ipfs release, you shouldn't see that first error unless there's actually a daemon running.
<Stebalien>
That is, we use flock (or something like that) to lock the file only for the lifetime of the process.
