kmal: for technical reasons, I skipped IPNS though in favor of dyndns pointing to /ipfs/$CID directly
<bmwiedemann>
for some reason, there was always a 1 minute delay when resolving ipns, then it would be cached for ~1 minute and then need another long delay for the next access
clemo has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
<kmal>
Yeah. I've always had way-too-long delays with IPNS. DNSLink worked fine though.
<kmal>
So, good call! :) (Even though I don't use openSUSE)
<bmwiedemann>
kmal: what are you using?
<kmal>
bmwiedemann: Currently Manjaro, though I've been all over the place. (Distro hopping, I believe it's called)
<bmwiedemann>
yes, it is
<bmwiedemann>
I often refer to ArchLinux docs :-)
<kmal>
Yeah -- do you use openSUSE? (just realized you wrote that article :) (does it integrate well with IPFS?)
<kmal>
it <- openSUSE
i1nfusion has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<bmwiedemann>
We got a go-ipfs package built offline from source (which is not that easy with new-fangled software)
<bmwiedemann>
so fuse and http gateway work just fine
<kmal>
:) That's good to hear.
<bmwiedemann>
but then, the go binaries are very portable. I copied it over to servers with older openSUSE and Debian versions and it just worked there, too.
<kmal>
Nice.

I feel like there might be multiple IPFS networks that aren't connected, or that are only connected via some very slow hosts given how long it takes to find a file.

it'd be nice to have gateways expose their node's CID
<postables[m]>
BenLubar: a somewhat "hacky" way to find out CID's of nodes is to run ` ipfs dht findprovs Qmaisz6NMhDB51cCvNWa1GMS7LU1pAxdF4Ld6Ft9kZEP2a` it's the file used by the public gateway checker (https://ipfs.github.io/public-gateway-checker/) and most if not all gateways will probably be pinning this

there are git repos in IPFS (z8mWaJHXieAVxxLagBpdaNWFEBKVWmMiE, for example) - how do I add one? I saw several projects that looked like they could, but they all either didn't work at all or added git content as a file.

that sounds exactly like how `ipfs dht findprovs` should be have. If it's something you just pinned and that hasn't been uploaded before, you shouldn't find any providers except for yourself
<BenLubar>
I pinned it using ipfs pin add, not ipfs add
