<postables[m]> are any of the mods on the ipfs subreddit around? There's been a couple spam posts on the subreddit the last few days, and it doesn't look like there's much moderation on the subreddit itself. It can get unruly pretty quickly, a lot of other subreddits end up tanking with spam. It might be a good idea to have some sort of like community moderation system (doens't necessarily need to be the IPFS developers since ya'll are
<postables[m]> busy doing some really cool shit), with guidelines or whatever to reduce spam, and bam/remove posts from spammers. As IPFS grows larger and more popular this could become a decent issue.
<postables[m]> The guidelines and stuff on discuss.ipfs.io would be good to also have on the subreddit.
mauz555 has joined #ipfs
<postables[m]> A good example is https://www.reddit.com/r/ethdev/, there was a period where there wasn't much moderation, and the subreddit was just polluted with people advertising their ICOs, affiliate links, etc... Once moderation was done regularly, the subreddit was drastically cleaned up to actually focus on ethereum development

<fiatjaf> is there a write-up anywhere that explains what _exactly_ IPFS does?
xcm has joined #ipfs
random_yanek has quit [Quit: random_yanek]
<fiatjaf> I'm stupid, so I can only imagine it 1) separates content in blocks, hashes these and stores hashes in a local database and blocks on /blocks. 2) connects to other nodes. 3) whenever you want to fetch something it asks other nodes if they have that hash, if they do, connect to them and download it.
<fiatjaf> in this simplistic construct, there's no need for a dht, all communication can be done through gossip messaging.
<fiatjaf> what is wrong?
<fiatjaf> (also, in this simplistic construct, there's no need to be constantly announcing stuff or verifying hashes, you can just sit and wait)
sbani has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<Swedneck> well i know IPFS doesn't ask "do you have this hash?", it asks "Do you know nodes that have this hash?"
<Swedneck> hence the DHT
sbani has joined #ipfs
<fiatjaf> couldn't it be just a 'do you have this hash?'?
<fiatjaf> relayed by everybody
<fiatjaf> 'node x is asking if you have this hash'
<fiatjaf> is that slow?

<Swedneck> it's one hell of a lot more traffic than asking a couple nodes if they know anyone with the ash
<Swedneck> s/ash/hash
<fiatjaf> nothing could be slower than ipfs currently when there's just one node with the data you need and you're not directly connected to it
he1kki has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<fiatjaf> and ipfs currently produces a hell of a lot of traffic, just for keeping the dhts updated
<fiatjaf> aren't dhts a bad idea overall, because you rely on other nodes for keeping data that interest you?
<fiatjaf> isn't a better idea is to just keep all the data yourself and update it with broadcast messages
<fiatjaf> (please note that I'm just asking, I have no expertise in these topics)
<r0kk3rz> you could start by reading the whitepaper
<fiatjaf> isn't that outdated?
<r0kk3rz> not overly
<r0kk3rz> a few ideas have evolved, but not unrecognisably

<r0kk3rz> not that ive seen

<TimMc> postables[m]: Funny, I think of videos as "if I have a lot of time", and whitepapers as "strapped for time". :-P
<TimMc> learning styles, how do they work
<Swedneck> i think it's more that videos tend to be a bit simplified
<Swedneck> animations and good hosts also helps understand easier
<postables[m]> TimMc: swedneck is correct, also videos can be watched/listened to while you're on a dog walk, going poop on the toilet (Or whever you poop i guess), going shopping, etc...
<postables[m]> whenever im on public transit i use it as a good time to catch up on videos or read whitepapers
<TimMc> Ah, I don't have a smartphone; that probably accounts for a lot of why other people seem to like videos so much more.
<TimMc> I never really made that connection before...
<TimMc> animations are good though, yeah
<postables[m]> r0kk3rz: ok yea i was considering just doing research into threat models against DHts and the tech IPFS uses under th ehood, thanks.
