<postables[m]> voker57: do you have a link to the github issue? I started using badger in the summer, and it's been working extremely well. That being said, always have backups. I've got 2 nodes with the repo as badger, debating whether i should have my 3rd node as badger, or flatfs in-case shit goes down. But IIRC it's been pretty stable for awhile now

<TimMc> This is a bold claim from the whitepaper: "cycles are not possible, as enforced by hash addressing.:

<TimMc> An attacker has all the entropy and flexibility they need in order to create a cycle, despite the hashes. Clients need cycle detection.

<ivanvp> I've got a totally noob question. Say I want to implement an app (say a blog) that stores data on IPFS with a certain degree of permanence. For that I'd have to set up my own node and store data there, right? Because nobody is going to duplicate and store data for me?
<ivanvp> I find this a bit at odds with my understanding of IPFS philosophy. Isn't redundance one of the major selling points?
<ivanvp> Does redundance come only when somebody explicitly pins content on another node?
<Swedneck> you can pay for pinning of content
<Swedneck> or you can make content that's so good that people volountarily pin it
<ivanvp> Because with the setup of me running my own node and pinning the data upload to it just sounds like a centralized server
<ivanvp> Swedneck: I see, I see
<Swedneck> well let's use my site, linuxgaming.life, as an example
<ivanvp> thanks. then perhaps an even more naive question. who could I pay for pinning my content? I haven't found a service like that in my (perhaps superficial) exploration
<Swedneck> actually let's not
<ivanvp> =)
<Swedneck> because i just realized i redirect things via my server, so it's a bad example
<fiatjaf> ivanvp, https://piln.xyz/
<Swedneck> hmm, i'm now realizing that bare domains really kinda suck
<ivanvp> Swedneck: so you proxy via your backend to IPFS-stored content?
<ivanvp> fiatjaf: thanks!
<Swedneck> well the bare domain has an A record pointing to my server, which redirects any request to the bare domain to www.linuxgaming.life
<fiatjaf> why don't you serve things in the bare domain?
<Swedneck> because bare domains suck
<fiatjaf> why?
<Swedneck> no cname records on the bare domain
<fiatjaf> I can have cname records in bare domains
<fiatjaf> on cloudflare dns
<fiatjaf> and probably in many other places
<Swedneck> well you shouldn't
<fiatjaf> anyway, I also use redirect.name to redirect people from www domains to the bare version
<fiatjaf> why?

<ivanvp> but I'd definitely need my own node first to actually upload the content in the first place, right?
<ivanvp> I don't fully understand gateways, like Infura and Cloudfare, would they allow uploading IPFS objects?
<Swedneck> well i know eternum.io lets you upload stuff
<Swedneck> not sure if it lets you do it via the api though
<fiatjaf> I don't think that makes sense
<fiatjaf> the way protocols are created and evolve on the internet is and has always been: a big company invents something, others follow
<fiatjaf> not by committees of bureaucrats

<postables[m]> If you're looking for a quality pinning service https://nuts.rtradetechnologies.com:6771
<postables[m]> Much better than eternum (no offense to eternum) but we're fully open sourced, run in our own datacenter as opposed to eternum which is run within AWS. We also allow for usage of IPNS, management of IPFS keys, pubsub, private networks, etc..
<Swedneck> That's nuts
<postables[m]> We're primarily API based, the web interface I linked to is basically a trimmed down service which runs ontop of the API

<Swedneck> Ah
<postables[m]> ivanvp: gateways most often don't let you upload they are typically read only
