are files stored in the filesystem from "ipfs files" pinned?

I'm trying to copy from an ipfs-pack daemon to go-ipfs

BenLubar, they're pinned in the sense that they're not removed by the GC

ipfs seems to keep forgetting I ran "ipfs swarm connect /ip4/127.0.0.1/tcp/4002/ipfs/QmcYwvYg7ZKq288ENpzTMZRFFE84PXPayiFov33eT5K2m5"

despite that peer having every file it wants

BenLubar, that happens
<fiatjaf>
all the time
<fiatjaf>
I don't know why IPFS is so bad at this
<fiatjaf>
I mean: what could IPFS be doing if not downloading the requested file from the only peer that has it?
<BenLubar>
can I tell it to never disconnect from a peer?
<BenLubar>
the ipfs-pack node is apparently uploading 300 bytes per second which is pretty pitiful
<fiatjaf>
it remains a mistery to me
<fiatjaf>
maybe add that peer to the .Bootstrap list on config

hi guys, what would be the best way to handle single photo and all it's renditions with ipfs
BeerHall has joined #ipfs
<woss_io>
i'm deciding to switch all my storage for photos ( an platform im building) from pure s3 to s3 backed ipfs. now i have the ipfs running in docker and using it to calculate the CID for the photos then uploading that to s3.
<woss_io>
i watched a vid some time ago how can you add a folder to ipfs using ipld and add connections to the files that are under it, is it possible to use something like that with photo 1->n renditions?
<woss_io>
thanks

woss_io, yes, the ipld stuff is done with `ipfs dag`, I think
hurikhan77 has joined #ipfs
<fiatjaf>
woss_io, but s3-backed ipfs can be quite complicated (unless you configure it well your ipfs daemon will do thousands of calls to s3)
cratliff has quit [Ping timeout: 272 seconds]
<fiatjaf>
woss_io, also, I don't think you can calculate the cid by yourself in that way, it won't mimic the correct directory structure ipfs expects
<fiatjaf>
I mean: the ipfs directory structure is not a bunch of files with cids

swedneck: I've 100% stopped using CloudFlare gateway it's pretty crap. 50% of the time it never resolves and gives me 502 gateway errors
<momack2[m]>
does IPRS still exist?
<Swedneck>
hmm
<Swedneck>
i mean i definitely could use my own gateway, but i'd like to have it delivered as close to the user as possible
<Swedneck>
no i mean, how do you use HTTPS on your domain while also using the ipfs.io gateway?
<Swedneck>
just making a CNAME record that points to ipfs.io means you can't use HTTPS

why cant you?
<stebalien>
Because we'd need to automatically acquire certificates for your domain (e.g., using let's encrypt). Cloudflare does that automatically but we don't.

(sorry i was playing fallout)

if you use cloudflare for your DNS provider/content distributor you can get their automatic certificates without having to CNAME ot cloudflare-ipfs.com

yes that's what i'm doing right now

it's just that it takes ages for cloudflare to notice me changing my DNS
