<vyzo> ToxicFrog: it still publishes to the dht
<ToxicFrog> Boo :(
<vyzo> so that clients that don't have enabled ipns pubsub can use it
ericxtang has joined #ipfs
<ToxicFrog> I mean, that makes sense, but I was hoping --enable-namesys-pubsub might let me use IPNS.
<vyzo> well
<vyzo> we are considering a future where ipns might be primarily distributed through pubsub
<vyzo> but we can't stop pushing to the dht all of a sudden
<vyzo> it will break users who don't have pubsub
<vyzo> and it is also still experimental
<vyzo> we are taking it easy with it
<ToxicFrog> (I am specifically referring to #1941 -- IPNS doesn't work at all with small swarms)
<vyzo> oh wow that's an ancient issue
<vyzo> i was not aware of it
<vyzo> it shouldn't stop you from using pubsub though
<vyzo> the publish happens in parallel
<ToxicFrog> Based on my (very limited) understanding, ipns name publish isn't considered to have "succeeded" unless it can publish the name to a quorum of peers, so if you don't have that quorum the whole thing fails, including creating an entry in the name table on the node you tried to publish on
<ToxicFrog> So you can't even publish/resolve things locally if the swarm doesn't have enough peers to publish to.
<vyzo> well, with pubsub enabled it works a little different
<vyzo> we do the dht dance etc still
<vyzo> but in parallel, we push to the pubsub topic
<ToxicFrog> Hmm
<vyzo> and peers that are subscribed to the topic receive the value
<vyzo> so that they can resolve from cache directly
<ToxicFrog> So it might still "fail" but successfully create the name table(?terminology) entry locally?
<vyzo> yes, it might fail partially
<vyzo> maybe the UX isn't as great on this
<vyzo> we should probably improve on it
<ToxicFrog> And publish to any other connected peers that are using pubsub? (n.b. for my swarm this is often "no peers", since it's a two-node swarm with one frequently offline)
<vyzo> well pubsub is not persistent
<ToxicFrog> (so the use case I'm usually interested in is "I have exactly one node")
<vyzo> yeah, that's fine
inetic has joined #ipfs
<vyzo> as long as it is subscribed in the topic and online, it will get the new record
<ToxicFrog> I will give that a try later and see if it works, then
<vyzo> do you mind updating the issue with your experience?
<ToxicFrog> For most of my uses I don't even care if it makes it to the other peer in a timely manner (or at all), I just need to be able to resolve it on the node I created it on
<vyzo> we would like to improve the UX for ipns pubsub if there are any issues
<ToxicFrog> Sure.
<ToxicFrog> Ping you here when I do?
<vyzo> or add to the issue
<vyzo> probably works best
<ToxicFrog> I mean, would you like me to ping you here after I update the issue
<vyzo> so that others can see it and it's in our shared knowledge base :)
<ToxicFrog> So that you know I have done so
<vyzo> sure, that's cool
<vyzo> I'll get an email though, so it's a bit redundant

<ToxicFrog> Huh. I'm having trouble building ipfs 0.4.14 from source, because the CIDs are all wrong:
<ToxicFrog> go/src/github.com/ipfs/go-ipfs/exchange/bitswap/wantlist/wantlist.go:9:2: cannot find package "gx/ipfs/QmcZfnkapfECQGcLZaf9B79NRg7cRa9EnZh4LSbkCzwNvY/go-cid" in any of: [...]
<ToxicFrog> /tmp/nix-build-ipfs-0.4.14.drv-0/go/src/gx/ipfs/QmXfkENeeBvh3zYA51MaSdGUdBjhQ99cP5WQe8zgr6wchG/go-libp2p-net (from $GOPATH)
<ToxicFrog> Er, whoops
<ToxicFrog> /tmp/nix-build-ipfs-0.4.14.drv-0/go/src/gx/ipfs/QmcZfnkapfECQGcLZaf9B79NRg7cRa9EnZh4LSbkCzwNvY/go-cid (from $GOPATH)
<ToxicFrog> go-cid does exist under /tmp/nix-build-ipfs-0.4.14.drv-0/go/src/gx/ipfs/, but under a different CID.
<ToxicFrog> I assume I'm holding the build system wrong, but I can't figure out how.
ericxtang has joined #ipfs
drrty has joined #ipfs
kupad has joined #ipfs
<ToxicFrog> Based on the CIDs, gx is grabbing an older version of the packages than ipfs 0.4.14 depends on :/
<vyzo> did you do 'make build'?
<vyzo> after checking out the source
<vyzo> I am not very intimately with nix, and it does a lot of things differently
<vyzo> ...intimately familiar above
<ToxicFrog> Yeah, investigating further I think the problem is in the nix end of things -- gx is fetching the right stuff but the build is running with the stuff fetched by gx for 0.4.13
fazo96_ has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
<ToxicFrog> ...and it turns out that 0.4.14 is already in the repos, I just needed to update my channels

<ToxicFrog> vyzo: there's only one peer, and resolving first doesn't help.
<ToxicFrog> Er, only one node, rather. `ipfs swarm addrs` is empty.
<vyzo> you know, ipns pubsub bootstraps through the DHT
<vyzo> and if it's not there becauase there is only one peer, then it might not work
<vyzo> i would classify this as a bug
shoogz has quit [Ping timeout: 255 seconds]
<vyzo> btw, are your peers connected before you start?
<vyzo> i'll add a suggestion to do that in the issue
<vyzo> let's debug this :)
<ToxicFrog> There are no peers. Nothing is connected. The swarm currently consists only of a single node, by design.
<vyzo> yeah, that explains it
<ToxicFrog> The problem I have is that IPNS does not work when the node is not connected to any peers, not even locally.
<vyzo> there is no peer to pubsub to
<vyzo> ok
<vyzo> I would call that a BUG
<ToxicFrog> Yes, hence the issue.
<ToxicFrog> Unfortunately I don't know enough about Go or IPFS to fix it myself, and don't currently have time to gain that knowledge.
<vyzo> ok, we have it in the issue tracker
<vyzo> we are in the process on fixing connectivity in the DHT
mildred has joined #ipfs
<vyzo> so yeah
<vyzo> i didn't quite appreciate the fact that it's a single peer, not connected to anything
* ToxicFrog nods
<ToxicFrog> Perhaps I should have emphasized that more earlier -- sometimes it's connected to a second peer, but the vast majority of the time it's the only member of its swarm.

<coyotespike> A browser IPFS node is able to connect to either of these. Any ideas would be great.
