<matheus> hi, I want to buy a cubieboard to run ubuntu 12.04 server, someone can say thats possible?
<\\Mr_C\\> yes
<\\Mr_C\\> i did till i switched to debian
smccarthy has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<matheus> \\Mr_C\\: how?
<\\Mr_C\\> how what?
<matheus> \\Mr_C\\: I was looking for it all afternoon
<matheus> \\Mr_C\\: install ubuntu 12.04 server
<\\Mr_C\\> just install debian
<\\Mr_C\\> thats server enough
<\\Mr_C\\> ubuntu is a fork from debian
<\\Mr_C\\> i think it works the same
<\\Mr_C\\> its really easy to install
<matheus> \\Mr_C\\: Not exactly but ok. How I can install a basic Debian without GUI
<\\Mr_C\\> hehe
<\\Mr_C\\> thats what i did
<\\Mr_C\\> i cant stand the gui
<matheus> Neither do I
<\\Mr_C\\> do you have access to a linux machine?
<matheus> yep
<\\Mr_C\\> ok then
<matheus> I use ubuntu for 2 years
<matheus> I want to run some servers,so I want to buy cubieboard to have fan
<\\Mr_C\\> this script here is really good, im not sure if this today update is stable, but i have the last stable error free script if you want it
<\\Mr_C\\> just edit the config.sh
<\\Mr_C\\> and then run the armstrap.sh
<\\Mr_C\\> and it will create either an image or auto write to the sd card
<matheus> I'm new to this kind of enviroment
<\\Mr_C\\> just edit a couple lines in the config.sh script
<matheus> so in the cubieboard it was nand(android) and the SDcard option
<\\Mr_C\\> like the password and host
<\\Mr_C\\> and pick either sdcard or image
<\\Mr_C\\> i usually just let it create the image
<\\Mr_C\\> oops
<\\Mr_C\\> i mean
<\\Mr_C\\> i usually just let it create the sdcard
<\\Mr_C\\> and it boots everytime
<\\Mr_C\\> then i just do apt-get update etc...
<matheus> get it
<\\Mr_C\\> and add whatever things i want
<matheus> so
<\\Mr_C\\> well
<matheus> I run those commands inside the cubieboard?
<\\Mr_C\\> the android crap i deleted right away
<\\Mr_C\\> you run those commands from an already working linux machine
<matheus> ok
<\\Mr_C\\> and put your sdcard in
<matheus> ahhhh
<matheus> ok
<matheus> So I will use my machine to create a new linux device
<\\Mr_C\\> the first time you do it will take a while
<matheus> which is the SD card
<\\Mr_C\\> but any time after will be faster
<\\Mr_C\\> since it ill have all the needed downloaded stuff
<\\Mr_C\\> ill=will
<\\Mr_C\\> download that script unpack it on a linux machine
<\\Mr_C\\> plug your sdcard in a usb port
<\\Mr_C\\> edit the config.sh file
<\\Mr_C\\> the run ./armStrap.sh
<\\Mr_C\\> and wait
<\\Mr_C\\> when its done, put the sdcardin the cubieboard and boot
<\\Mr_C\\> and do your normal apt-get stuff and add whatever you want
<matheus> ok
<matheus> great
<matheus> I will buy one for me
<matheus> I'm really excited
<\\Mr_C\\> i have the cubieboard and raspberry pi
<\\Mr_C\\> i like them both
<matheus> hey
<\\Mr_C\\> im gonna wait for the cubieboard 2 since im not really doing anything for speed, just playing around with it

<matheus> ?
<matheus> on config.sh
discopig has joined #cubieboard
<\\Mr_C\\> what script is that from?
<\\Mr_C\\> the newer one?
<matheus> yes
<\\Mr_C\\> i wouldnt run that just yet
<matheus> In the gip repository that you gave me
<\\Mr_C\\> do the one i showed you
<\\Mr_C\\> its still buggy on the git
<\\Mr_C\\> lots of errors
<\\Mr_C\\> i download the daily changes and test them and the last one that didnt have any errors is this one
<\\Mr_C\\> didnt try todays, but i guess i will for the heck of it
<matheus> It should be easier to install all the distros in ARM processor =/
<\\Mr_C\\> well, its getting there
<\\Mr_C\\> its a new fad
<\\Mr_C\\> more people are getting involved
<matheus> yes
<\\Mr_C\\> sorta like getting a new xbox or playstation and wanting to mod it, takes time to hack/figure things out
<\\Mr_C\\> hehe
<\\Mr_C\\> im trying the new script
<\\Mr_C\\> we will see
<matheus> man
<matheus> thats perfect
<matheus> next time, I wont buy a laptop anymore
<matheus> If it turns easy to install ubuntu, etc

<\\Mr_C\\> why you want ubuntu?
<\\Mr_C\\> and not debian
<matheus> humm
<\\Mr_C\\> ubuntu is a modded debian
<\\Mr_C\\> hehe
<matheus> good question
<matheus> never tried debian for desktop
<\\Mr_C\\> may as well run a windows emulator
<\\Mr_C\\> i weird
<\\Mr_C\\> i feel dbuntu is an emualr
<\\Mr_C\\> ubuntu
<matheus> hummm
<\\Mr_C\\> since its a rip off of debian
<matheus> for server a prefer ubuntu because of the support
<\\Mr_C\\> umm
<\\Mr_C\\> debian has support
<\\Mr_C\\> ubuntu uses it
<\\Mr_C\\> im also a knoob, but i really dont like having a middle man
<\\Mr_C\\> so i run debian
<\\Mr_C\\> just like kde and gnome and crap like that, im happy using just xinit or startx to run anything i need a gui for
<\\Mr_C\\> sigh

<Kamilion> Allright, I'm stumped. Got my cubieboard2 on friday, and for the life of me I can't figure out how to reflash this damned thing
<Kamilion> all i get is a red light or no red light
<shineworld> reflash ? Use LiveSuit with FEL mode
<Kamilion> What's livesuite?
<shineworld> Chapper 1.3
<shineworld> To be simple:
<Kamilion> I've got PheonixSuit 1.0.6
<Kamilion> where can I download livesuit?
<shineworld> there are links on upon link
<Kamilion> yes, this is where I got phoenixsuit 1.0.6
<shineworld> I'm using LiveSuit with xubuntu 12.04 x64 bit
<Kamilion> Windows 7
<shineworld> behind a VM
<shineworld> neved do with Windoze... but a rule is important:
<Kamilion> I am unable to get the Cubieboard2 in FEL mode
<Kamilion> i followed the instructions it told me
<shineworld> - Remove all cables
<shineworld> - Start (X)Suit program
<Kamilion> hold power until lights off, hold FEL, plug USB, click power 10 times, release fel
<shineworld> - Load Images
<shineworld> Follow this info:
<shineworld> - Remove all cables
<shineworld> - Keep pressed FEL button
<shineworld> - Attach ONLY OTG cable (not power cable)
<shineworld> - Wait some secs
<Kamilion> AH!
<shineworld> - Release FEL button
<Kamilion> power cable is connected
<shineworld> Now you are in FEL MODE
<Kamilion> what is LEDs for FEL mode
<shineworld> A lack in documentation ......
<shineworld> RED led
<Kamilion> solid RED, no blue no green?
<shineworld> yes
<Kamilion> ok, then I am getting into FEL and windows is just trash lol
<shineworld> but DON'T connect never POWER CABLE
<Kamilion> double negative -- can you rephrase?
<shineworld> sorry I'm not English... so
<shineworld> my language is poor
<Kamilion> No problem, your english is fine except small detail ;)
<shineworld> Not connect power cable... only OTG cable
<Kamilion> I am IRC 20 years, deal with many people ;)
<shineworld> 43 for me
<Kamilion> OK, OTG cable only
<Kamilion> I am age 30, IRCing 20 years
<Kamilion> ;)
<shineworld> uh.... so much...
<Kamilion> Going to get my linux EEE netbook
<Kamilion> maybe it will work better
<shineworld> to install Livesuit on linux require installation of some things on kernel
<shineworld> however for me works very fine (just some hack to do in vmWare Fusion VM settiongs to be able to work with USB for FEL mode)
<shineworld> virtual machine servers are who.e sometimes
<shineworld> Kamilion: I guess info on PheonixSuit are for usual tablets but I've tried many time with power cable attached and doesn't works
<Kamilion> hmm
<Kamilion> I will try VMware first then
<shineworld> but with Phoneix doesn't work with new info ?
<Kamilion> i have nothing but otg connected, held down FEL for ~5 sec so android does not boot, solid red light
<shineworld> 1 - board in hand without any connection
<shineworld> 2 - press FEL
<shineworld> 3 - connect OTG cable to board keeping pressed FEL
<shineworld> 4 - wait till red led become ON and then release FEL button
<shineworld> now you are in FEL mode
<shineworld> ready to push *.img file to nand with (x)Suite
<FR^2> shineworld: Could you create a separate wiki page, does that make sense? :)
<Kamilion> Eh, I don't mind cleaning up the wiki page once I actually figure out what I'm supposed to be doing ;)
<Kamilion> No, pheonix only detects cubieboard2 while Android has started up and is running (blue+green)
<Kamilion> I will try vmware now
<shineworld> I need only to check info in actual wiki page related to LiveSuit and eventually add info about operations to work under vmWare Fusion VM
<shineworld> *to do to work
<Kamilion> windows has found a new device now, however
<shineworld> Windoze... blah
<shineworld> In another VM I'm just developing a graphical editor with it ... I hate it ...
<Kamilion> yeah, well, fix all my games on ubuntu 13.04 with wine 1.5 and all winetricks, ok? ;)
<shineworld> In Linux you have to use LiveSuite for A20 and add this line to your vmx file (if you use vmware)
<shineworld> usb.quirks.device0 = "0x1f3a:0xefe8 skip-reset"
<Kamilion> slowly steam will kill windows
<Kamilion> OK, will see if that quirk applys to VMWare Workstation 9.0.2
<shineworld> I'm a windows programmer by 15 years ... it put food on my tables
<Kamilion> on Windows 7 64bit
<Kamilion> yeah, and I wouldn't trust a windows box to host any server thing
<shineworld> to get the right PID you have to put the board on FEL mode (in linux) and get the value from: lsusb -v
<Kamilion> but linux is still terrible and fragmented on the desktop -- I *must* use ubuntu or centos or packages are impossible to find, and then why do not I just run arch and gcc EVERYTHING for days ;)
<Kamilion> Nvidia CUDA SDK does not play well with Arch
<Kamilion> no Gentoo support
<Kamilion> debian is too old
<Kamilion> redhat is pile of 2.6.18 crap
<Kamilion> so is centos
<Kamilion> fedora is bad for servers because fedora says so
<Kamilion> so all that is left is ubuntu... and oracle doesn't support ubuntu!
<Kamilion> But such is the life of an engineer, eh?
<shineworld> yeah...
<shineworld> follow info at : http://linux-sunxi.org/LiveSuit
<shineworld> you have to install dkms
<Kamilion> ok, no problem
<Kamilion> had that for vmware anyway
<shineworld> actually I'm using xubuntu 12.04 x64 and all worked fine
<Kamilion> hm, i'll be using lubuntu 13.04 64bit
<shineworld> 12.04.1 and > have some problems (listen by friends)
<shineworld> probably not problems with LiveSuit but with other things like Android eco-system
<Kamilion> buildroot / compile problems, maybe?
<shineworld> missing required packets etc..
<shineworld> gcc to downgrade
<shineworld> and son on
<shineworld> so
<shineworld> I've tried many times to get Android OS for A10 on 12.10 without results so I've moved back to 12.04
<shineworld> and I've care to avoid any new system update :)
<Kamilion> the vm?? not your host pc i pray
pacopad has joined #cubieboard
<Kamilion> old chromium hurts to use, hahahahahaha
<Kamilion> anyway, i have some engineering questions for my cubieboard2 purpouse
<Kamilion> i wish to connect to many SATA drive to diagnose problems -- SoC with SATA i think can be ideal
<shineworld> I'm using a powerful PC which run MacOSX like host and with a lot of VM for my dev jobs
<shineworld> Cubie can connect only one SATA disk I guess....
<Kamilion> how 'deep' may i speak with the SATA drive from the cubieboard?
<Kamilion> may i send my own commands to the disk and see my results?
<shineworld> sorry I'm an Android based peripheral dummy maker which don't use SATA interface ...
<Kamilion> i think it is not AHCI like PC
<Kamilion> and i can get away from PC AHCI drivers and bios and RAID controller
<Kamilion> and send ATA SECURE ERASE command
<Kamilion> A20 is very inexpensive, i hope it will be very good for this use

<utente> Gumboot, putting dissiparto should allow to overclock with more safety for the device

<Gumboot> utente: I don't think thermal control will help you overclock at all.
<utente> Gumboot, thermal control? no. Heat dissipator.
<Gumboot> Yeah. Process limitations will stop you before it can get hot.

<utente> Gumboot, at the moment, i will be happy if heat dissiparto will be able to give me 100-150Mhz more.
<Gumboot> It won't.
<utente> we will see....
<utente> how can you be so sure?

<suhanc> i asked the other relevant channel also, waiting for answers..any news about any working bsd on the cubie?
<Gumboot> utente: Because the CPU doesn't draw enough power to warm itself up substantially. If it can't warm itself up then dissipating that heat isn't going to make much difference.
<Gumboot> You could try active cooling to push it well below ambient. That _might_ push you into a position where you get some extra performance, but it can equally make it worse.
<utente> Gumboot, what maximum Mhz did you set on CB?
<Gumboot> I think it's around 1200 or so. I haven't pushed very hard, myself.
<utente> yes, me too i stay between 1152 and 1200. if i set more, soc starts to be hot. so, with heat dissipator, i hope to reach 1300, just that.
