<megal0maniac> Hey. Quick question for anyone in the know. When buying a dev board, should one go for the A10 or A20? A20 is obviously more powerful and only increases price by USD8 or 9, but the A10 seems better supported and has more documentation
<megal0maniac> I'm looking at marsboard or cubieboard specifically. Both of them have identical A10 and A20 versions
<megal0maniac> I'm happy to spend the extra $ if it's worth it, don't want to regret my decision later on, but it doesn't make sense if the A20 lacks software support

<shineworld> I've either A10 and A20
<megal0maniac> But if I had to pick one?
<megal0maniac> (And I do)
<shineworld> at this moment I'm using A10 for real projects and A20 to development
<shineworld> and research because the entire kernel isn't so mature
<shineworld> that don't mean that A20 haven't kernel and android running, only that isn't yet on linux-sunxi branch
<shineworld> At moment I've 8 A10 perfectly running an one A20 (gift) in which I'm moving to
<Dave77> if I run apt-get install lubuntu-desktop (and download 192MB) will it work on cubieboard?
<shineworld> I'm using them only with Android OS (my target)
<megal0maniac> shineworld: So if I actually want to use the board, and specifically with Debian, then I should get the A10?
<shineworld> Hard to choose take this info for your choice (guru fix me if I'm wrong):
<shineworld> - A10 has begun to be supported on mainline of kernel.org (you can see basic support for timer, etc in kernel 3.9 >), A20 don't have that.
<megal0maniac> My idea is to stick it behind my TV. Android on NAND and Debian on an SD card. Most of the time it will be running Debian headless
<shineworld> - A10 has already a lot of linux ready to install versions
<megal0maniac> Then it looks like A10 is the one to get if I'm mainly using Linux. Thanks :)
<shineworld> I made some benchmark test in android of A10 vs A20 and improvements are visible on A20 BUT some parts, like GFX, doesn't work perfectly and results change every time I run the Antutu (decreasing of a lot)
Dave77 has quit []
<shineworld> do you know ANTUTU ?
<megal0maniac> No, I don't
<shineworld> I know is silly to base any comparison on benchmark but I'm lazy so Antutu help me to figure out the bigger differences between two products
<shineworld> A10 is available only with 4.0.4 and A20 start with 4.2.2 for example
<shineworld> I guess in A20 the Android OS is more supported than linux due the AllWinner sell its chips mainly to tablet and tv-stick makers
<megal0maniac> I can live with that. Will 4.2.2 be available on the A10 in future, or does support end at 4.0.4?
<Gumboot> Can you get the kernel for A20 Android and simply install whatever distro on that?
<megal0maniac> That makes sense. I'm looking at the tv-sticks too, but no fun to develop with :)
<megal0maniac> Gumboot: Sure, you could probably chroot
<shineworld> there are some ports, for example in github.com/cubieboard branch JB but LAN doesn't work and other things
<Gumboot> No, I mean throw Android away.
<Gumboot> LAN and SATA are the only things I care about.
<shineworld> to use an android kernel with a linux distro ? I don't know ... to much far by my little knowledges
<shineworld> I know differences between a vanilla kernel to a lichee kernel to an android kernel
<Gumboot> Android just adds some trivial features which were (historically) rejected from mainline Linux.
<Gumboot> It's still Linux.
<shineworld> but to know differences doesn't mean to be able to play with
<Gumboot> Maybe the NetBSD crowd are doing better with A20.
<shineworld> yes
<Gumboot> I've run plenty of non-Android distributions with Android kernels, simply because Android kernels are easier to come by for ARM SoCs.
<Gumboot> The kernel I'm using on A10 is probably Android.
<shineworld> I'm just learning now kernel in depth... at end of year probably I should not write bullshit speaking about it
<megal0maniac> Gumboot: Get a Seagate Dockstar then. Mainline Linux support and gigabit LAN :)
<megal0maniac> No SATA, but even using ntfs-3g I get 25mbps throughput on USB drives, which is double the max throughput of 10/100
<shineworld> Gumboot: yes if you use linux-sunxi repo kernel it have android parts inner
<Gumboot> I have no time for USB mass storage.
<shineworld> megal0maniac: if you aren't a gury in programming A10 is right choice (IMO)
<shineworld> *guru
<megal0maniac> I think I'm going to buy one right now. Thanks :)
<shineworld> where do you buy ?
<megal0maniac> I don't know
<shineworld> where are you from ?
<megal0maniac> South Africa. Far away from everything
<shineworld> ok, my suggestion isn't valid for you ....
<megal0maniac> :)
<shineworld> I mean for buy
<Gumboot> Ideally I'd like to get rid of any kind of Linux, anyway.
<shineworld> I was a Windows programmer for last 15 years... linux is a new (in code) for me
<shineworld> but I like it
<megal0maniac> Linux is great for programmers
<shineworld> Windows put food on my table for a lot of years
<megal0maniac> They both have their place. OS flame wars are a complete waste of time
<megal0maniac> Like saying that a jetski is better than a quadbike
<shineworld> ssvb: thanks for link
<shineworld> yeah, but at now I'm falling in love with linux, android and I'm moving to release products powered by them
<shineworld> till now my combo was : proprietary RTOS devices + IDE running on Windows OS
<shineworld> but with A10 I've smell the power of Linux OS + Android and I was impressed of results
<shineworld> Thanks to that team I was able to move to new world and now I'm happy of step
<shineworld> ssvb: benchs are whores... and just look in android openbox sources... there are some mysterious "if process is Quadrant then" :)

<deasy> oops buZz *
<buZz> :)
<buZz> why?
<deasy> a20!
<deasy> a20 appeared just some weeks after the buy of my a10
<buZz> yeah .. i just saw Tom asking for beta testers
<buZz> replied, and got it ..
<deasy> lucky one!
<buZz> well
<buZz> its good you dont have it already
<deasy> bugs?
<buZz> hansg is still working a lot porting 3.4 kernel to A20

<buZz> Midnightmyth: someday perhaps :)
<buZz> lets just hope that when mainline finally supports A10/A20 that allwinner is still making them ;)
<Midnightmyth> Just found this article http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTM4NDc
<Midnightmyth> doesnt look like allwinner have any interrest in adding support in upstream kernel..
<buZz> yeah seems the writer of this article doesnt know about hansg's and linux-sunxi's efforts
<buZz> but indeed, allwinner doesnt care
<buZz> like most ARM SoC makers
<Midnightmyth> the article is 5 weeks old
<buZz> they just make 1 kernel, release source and go do soemthing else, ignoring all requestsx
<buZz> linux-sunxi's kernel is >6 months old
<jelly-home> Midnightmyth: if you read the whole thread, like phoronix didn't do, you'll see that was lkcl creating basically unnecessary fuss on lkml due to a percieved deadline
<Midnightmyth> jelly-home: I do admit that I did not read the whole thread, basicly I just wanted to know if the cubieboard A20 was supported if I bought one today.
<jelly-home> Midnightmyth: not in mainline kernel, not yet
<buZz> phoronix is nice in that they try to make this stuff more accessible
<buZz> but bad in the fact that, like most media, they do poor fact checking
<jelly-home> Midnightmyth: there's a #linux-sunxi channel with devs involved in mainlining effort if you're interested
<buZz> they are working on it nearly daily :P
<jelly-home> phoronix is notoriously bad about that
<Midnightmyth> jelly-home: I dont have any developer skills my self
joph has quit [Quit: ZNC - http://znc.in]
<jelly-home> Midnightmyth: so? You're allowed to lurk and ask stupid questions, just like I do
<buZz> so do i!
<Midnightmyth> thanks jelly-home but sadly no reason to buy a cubieboard ATM then
joph has joined #cubieboard
<jelly-home> Midnightmyth: if you don't do dev, why do you care about using mainline kernel instead of 3.3 or whatever works today?
<Midnightmyth> jelly-home: for the ease of use, I want to experiment with ceph.. it requires a newer kernel
<Midnightmyth> also the ease of use of upstream support, simply allow me to install a new version of fedora and everything works
<buZz> ceph?
<buZz> oh
<Midnightmyth> buZz: a distributed storage system
<buZz> cubie doesnt really seem like a platform to experiment with high availability storage :P
<jelly-home> Midnightmyth: you're not going to be able to "install a new version of fedora and everything works" for like 6-12 months
<buZz> actually, there are fedora images for A10
<Midnightmyth> jelly-home: as i said no reason to bue a cubieboard A20 then
<Midnightmyth> buy*
<buZz> hansg makes them, as he gets money from Fedora
<jelly-home> images, yes. normal installer and "everything works"? Hardly
<buZz> its a bit silly also to buy a developerboard and expect 'out of the box installers' to work ..
<buZz> i recommend ppl expecting hand-holding to go to raspberry pi
<deasy> yeah it seems a bit "hard" for me with cubie
<buZz> yes
<deasy> i have not try to build my sd for it now
<buZz> this is the way it is
<deasy> shame!
<buZz> but its getting better documented every day
<buZz> http://linux-sunxi.org/ has quite some howtos and tutorials
<deasy> yeah you have help ro rtfm with the boot sequence inside a little rom on the soc
<deasy> me to*
<jelly-home> there's nothing shameful in it! It's a work in progress.
