<rm> just get any normal UPS
<rm> will keep it up for hours
<rm> if not days
<wooy> rm, seems like best option so far. Found something remotely similar to what I would imagine, but the cost is not really justifiable http://www.amazon.com/Anker-10000mAh-Multi-Voltage-Camcoders-Recorders/dp/B005NGKR54
<rm> there are a lot of external battery packs like that one: http://dx.com/c/iphone-ipad-ipod-299/batteries-220/portable-external-batteries-226
<rm> but if you're going to use these as an UPS (i.e. connected into AC and into the Cubie all the time), I am not sure they will be smart enough to not charge the battery all the time (and wear it out quickly)

<buZz> most of those devices also dont charge while delivering power
<buZz> which is annoying
<Gumboot> How about the PMU on-board cubieboard? Chances are it was designed for tablets, so concurrent power+charge should be one of its operating modes.
<Gumboot> Then it would just be a question of getting the wires out.

<royger> hi
<royger> I have a probably very stupid question, but is there any image for the cubieboard2 that can be used form the SD card?
<\\Mr_C\\> same images as the cubieboard1
<\\Mr_C\\> everything is the same only dual core
<royger> but doesn't it need a kernel with A20 support?
<\\Mr_C\\> that i dont know, from what ive read and others talking about everything works the same
discopig has joined #cubieboard
discopig has quit [Changing host]

<\\Mr_C\\> there are two at the bottom that specificaly say 2
<\\Mr_C\\> Cubieboard2(A20):
<\\Mr_C\\> Download Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 images(image1, image2)
<\\Mr_C\\> Download Android-4.2.2 images(image1, image2,image3,image4,kernel)
<Bushmills> chances are that A10 kernel is without SMP support - not needed for single core. A20 is with SMP, to support multi core
<Bushmills> compare the configs in /boot, that should tell
<royger> \\Mr_C\\: yes, but these are for NAND only (see: http://linux-sunxi.org/Bootable_OS_images)
<Bushmills> that's probably the single one change making most sense for either board
<royger> also, I'm quite new to this ARM world, but what's the difference between NAND/SD images?
<bfree> yes those are for nand. http://linux-sunxi.org/Cubieboard2_wheezy_image is for sd. I don't think a cubie1 kernel will work on cubie2, but gimme and minute and I'll try and check one to be sure to be sure ;)
<royger> I'm currently downloading http://dl.cubieboard.org/software/ubuntu/cb-sdcard-1.1-linaro-quantal-alip-20130227-290.img.tgz and will try to boot from that
<Bushmills> i'd say it will.
<Bushmills> just no advantage of A20 over A10
<royger> bfree: thanks, I wasn't able to find this pages, will try one of those
<\\Mr_C\\> the nand is 4gb the sd can be whatever size you want upto 32gb
<\\Mr_C\\> i guess you could use the nand to boot and use the sd for storage of media if you like
<\\Mr_C\\> so many possibilities
<royger> yes, but I mean, why some images only work for NAND or SD, isn't it the same?
<\\Mr_C\\> pretty much
<\\Mr_C\\> just a couple changes in the boot config
herdingcat has joined #cubieboard
<royger> also, the kernel support for the A20/Cubieboard2 is not still merged into upstream Linux right?
<buZz> royger: same as A10
<buZz> also not into upstream yet (most of it)
<bfree> cubie2 is not going to boot with a cubie1 kernel (tried with cubie1 and cubie2 script.bin and all sane vairants of options). just hangs at "Calibrating delay loop". and that was me trying with an supporting a20 u-boot (which a cubie1 image wouldn't have)
<buZz> but, can you boot a A10 cubie with a A20 image? :P
<bfree> a20 kernel support hasn't even made it to linux-sunxi normal kernel's yet (afaik, only in the last few days if it has), neither 3.0 or 3.4, so you are "stuck" with the ~vendor 3.3 kernel
<buZz> hansg is working hard though
<bfree> buZz: possibly you can boot the A20 kernel on an A10, but again I wouldn't be tooo confident. and I somehow doubt the A20 u-boot/script.bin will work on the A10 anyway either ;)
<buZz> hmm yeah and you would need a diff .fex anyway
<bfree> I can't be bothered to re-arrange things to test that though ;) fex->script.bin (well that seems to be the conventional name for the binary version anyway)
<Bushmills> generally, one can run an SMP kernel on a single core machine without ill effects (apart from unnecessary use of a bit of RAM)
<royger> I'm not sure if Linux has some kind of patching mechanism to disable things like spinlocks when configured as SMP but running in UP
<royger> from what I've seen most development is done in linux-sunxi@googlegroups.com, does that also include patches that are sent to upstream Linux?
<bfree> smp kernel on up isn't an issue really. but a single kernel that supports A10 and A20 is more then just that
* buZz is printing a new case for his A20
<buZz> the stackable one
<royger> sure, A10 is an A8 if I remember correctly, and A20 is an A7

prassel- has joined #cubieboard
<royger> bfree: yes, unzx and dd to /dev/rdisk2 (I'm on a mac)
<bfree> is /dev/rdisk2 really the full usb device and NOT a partition?
<royger> yes, full SD, or it would be something like disk2p1 or similar
<royger> let me check the hashes
prassel has quit [Ping timeout: 256 seconds]
<\\Mr_C\\> royger
<\\Mr_C\\> why hide the beuty of the boards?
<royger> \\Mr_C\\: ?
<\\Mr_C\\> just get some little metal feet stackers and dont cover the sournding outside
<bfree> \\Mr_C\\: I guess you meant to address that to me ... or buzz ;)
<\\Mr_C\\> oh
<\\Mr_C\\> yea
<\\Mr_C\\> the cardboard box message
<royger> bfree: sha sum matches, so I need to perform some kind of button combination or something like this to force the board to boot from SD? I think not, but maybe I'm missing something obvious
<bfree> protection is mainly why I'm thinking about wrapping them up. stop stuff falling on them or them falling. also it's just a mess having cables going everywhere :-p
