<adam3us>
fluffypony yes that image explains all. it is a collision with differences that chosen to abuse jpeg formats inside PDF in order to display image A or image B to follow the collision. then using length extension the two images are appended to the collision, naturally they have the same hash also (due to length extension)
<fluffypony>
indeed - so it's just cleverly abusing the PDF format ;)
<adam3us>
it's nice that they chose a collision that is reusable in this way to stop people being "oh it's just a one off, to attack a new doc would cost $$$, so lets not worry about it", which we know from previous attacks is always the reaction.
<fluffypony>
yeah, had a few people tell me that the attack is infeasible because "it cost 110 years of a single-GPU computation"
<adam3us>
another fun stat is bitcoin does a computation of similar size about once per second
<fluffypony>
re: an attack against a git repo, since repos are already distributed that sort of attack *is* impractical except against a specific target
<fluffypony>
the git guys say that they're ~40% complete with switching to use object_id everywhere, which fixes that
lclc has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<fluffypony>
and they're also considering adding Google's collision detector to git
<adam3us>
another collision can be made for a known cost now, which will not be detected by that (i would think)
<adam3us>
it's best to phase to focus on phasing out the dodgy hash function, these things always get worse over time.

<fluffypony>
agreed, they should switch to sha3 for git 3.0 onwards and just be done with it
<fluffypony>
git hard fork

adding the collision detector would be a good intermediate solution though, to detect tampering right now, agree the long term focus should be to switch to a better hash function
