<apeiros_> __null: uh, I'm not aware of too many that require recompiling of ruby - the more common ones I know are readline and openssl - which ones are you talking about?
<__null> readline
<__null> i already did openssl
<__null> are those the only two common ones?
<banister`sleep> and zlib
<atmosx> did anyone ever managed to get rvm working with fcron?
<atmosx> apparently it's a very tricky task
<apeiros_> fcron?
<apeiros_> cron?
<atmosx> yeah, it's a cron replacement. however, i might have finally done it right.
<apeiros_> use a wrapper
<atmosx> I did
<atmosx> didn't work either
<apeiros_> rvm help wrapper
<apeiros_> well, works fine with cron here.
<apeiros_> and theoretically should work with about anything
<atmosx> Jan 15 01:05:12 [fcron] Job /home/atma/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/bin/ruby /usr/local/bin/morula -s hakmem update completed
<atmosx> !!! done !!!
<irk3z> ?
<atmosx> apeiros_: worked fine for me on a FreeBSD box running vixie-cron
<apeiros_> atmosx: that won't load rvm's env
<atmosx> Since I'm using ruby, gentoo was an awful choice to make for a server OS
<atmosx> apeiros_: it will

<__null> safest choice
<apeiros_> *shrug* if you say so
<__null> not security wise
<__null> but you know
<atmosx> __null: actually I should have gone with debian. I'm fairly familiar with Gentoo as it was my default OS for 4 years back in 2001-2005 and have used it in several occasions
<atmosx> however, these days ruby support sucks big time

<apeiros_> e.g. a = /a/; b = /b/; c = /#{a}|#{b}/
<apeiros_> atmosx: bbedit and currently giving sublime a try
<atmosx> oh hmm bbedit, can you run code directly from bbedit ? like cmd+R with textmate?
<apeiros_> I think so. but that's not a concern of mine.
<atmosx> I see

<Barbaren> hi
<Barbaren> quick question about arrays
<Barbaren> as you all know if a = [1,2,3] and b = [3,4,5] then a | b is [1,2,3,4,5] and a & b is [3], now, is there any way to do a take b which would be, the array [1,2] e.g., a less the elements in b? which operation should i use?
<Barbaren> ehm, just realized i can do "-" :D

<dagnachewa> is rvm manadatory if all I want is rails + nginx + passenger ?
<bobss8> no dagnachew
<Barbaren> you have issues with dependencies?
<Barbaren> rvm makes your life easier
<Barbaren> once you installed it
<Barbaren> sometimes you get issues with dependencies
<Barbaren> but there's scripts included to compile them easily
<Barbaren> just get all the dependencies and compile them in your rvm dir
<Barbaren> with the scripts provided
<Barbaren> zlib, openssl etc
<dagnachewa> banister`sleep, bobss8 so far I did with my distro package mamanger pacman -R ruby ; then I wanted to install rvm but I got this http://pastie.org/3187572

<Barbaren> i use rvm on my production machine
<Barbaren> i even run arch production :P
<Barbaren> which is supposedly stupid
<banister`sleep> dagnachewa: yeah, it can be a good way to spend family time
<Barbaren> but i hate debian
<dagnachewa> banister`sleep, brother family ???
<Barbaren> well, just go through the guides
<Barbaren> it's the easiest way
<dagnachewa> Barbaren, your using arch ?
<Barbaren> yes
<Barbaren> arch linux

<Barbaren> yes
<dagnachewa> Barbaren, then install rvm with gem ?
<Barbaren> you need some ruby to install rvm
<Barbaren> no
<Barbaren> install it ith the bash script
<Barbaren> that he provides
<Barbaren> on the website
<Barbaren> just install it in your home dir
<dagnachewa> yep
<dagnachewa> then what
<dagnachewa> rvm-install

<Barbaren> maybe you can install it from yaourt or something
<Barbaren> but i haven't tried
<MarcWeber> I'd like to start a small web project which in the worst case should be compiled to a windows executable.
<Barbaren> this is what you're supposed to do: $ bash -s stable < <(curl -s https://raw.github.com/wayneeseguin/rvm/master/binscripts/rvm-installer)
<MarcWeber> I need database access, some forms and I need to create pdf files.
<Barbaren> from your home dir
<Barbaren> no sudo
<Barbaren> oh, yeah right
<Barbaren> it complains?
<MarcWeber> Which minmial webframework do you recommend me to pick up?
<Barbaren> i have no idea what it's complaining about?
<bobss8> MarcWeber: use visual studio and c#
<Barbaren> is rubygems installed?
<Barbaren> bobss8: kidding? =)
<Barbaren> MarcWeber: did you check out sinatra?
<MarcWeber> Not yet - but it would have been my first choice.
<MarcWeber> http://ocra.rubyforge.org/ was recommended on the mailinglist for creating executables month ago. So that's what I'll try next.
<Barbaren> I havent used it personally, it's supposedly not very powerfull... but why don't you give it a try and build something simple in it?

<dagnachewa> Barbaren, I did it bash -s stable ...
<dagnachewa> Barbaren, then what
<Barbaren> do you have rvm installed?
<Barbaren> do gem list
<Barbaren> does it give you something?
<Barbaren> it should come with ruby i think?
<Barbaren> or gem -v
<rugok> no, it doesn't
<Barbaren> then maybe you have to install it with pacman first
<rugok> first get rvm, than ruby
<Barbaren> do pacman -S rubygems
<robyurkowski> Ocra is okay, MarcWeber.
<robyurkowski> Works, at the very least.
<Barbaren> rugok: i think ruby is a dependency of rubygems ;)
<robyurkowski> Also, Sinatra is pretty awesome.
<dagnachewa> Barbaren, I remove the installed rvm ?
<Barbaren> rugok: and ruby is also a dependency of rvm
<Barbaren> did it install properly?
<Barbaren> i thought it didn't install?
<dagnachewa> Barbaren, guess so
<Barbaren> did you add the stuff to your .bashrc that it asked you to?
<dagnachewa> it asked to source .bashrc
<dagnachewa> I did
<Barbaren> yeah, did you add the lines?
<Barbaren> [[ -s "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm" ]] && . "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm"
<Barbaren> that
<dagnachewa> it did not ask me to add line on the install
<Barbaren> it should've
<Barbaren> just add that line to the end of your .bashrc or .zshrc or whatever you're using
<Barbaren> if you do rvm -v does it give you something?
<dagnachewa> am adding those lines wait
<Barbaren> it needs to load rvm into your envar when you start the shell
<rugok> i did it myself,and it works
<rugok> kast week
<Barbaren> yeah, that looks solid
<dagnachewa> Barbaren, rvm -v

<dagnachewa> Barbaren, for production server I install all the gems with gem install capistrano or rvm install capistrano ? I had previously installed all the best gems with gem install app but know am following the archlinux perfect rails setup and it's using rvm
<rugok> i guess arch is not for beginners nor for programmers, more like for sys admins that doesn't have fuck all to do
<MarcWeber> Barbaren Do you know whether sinatra supports sending Exceptions by mail without much patching?
<MarcWeber> prbobly you can just wrap every get handler in your own begin .. rescue block.
<Barbaren> MarcWeber: no idea =)
<rugok> i think this can get you started http://www.sinatrarb.com/faq.html
<dagnachewa> Barbaren, know I have rvm installed ; do I remove the ruby i installed by pacman and do rvm install ruby-1.9.3 ?

<apeiros_> see top of https://github.com/apeiros/scriptfile/blob/master/lib/scriptfile.rb for a short description. it basically acts (almost) like a normal File instance, but only manipulates after __END__.
<nooodl> what i wanted to do is get Treetop to just read my grammar from DATA, but the syntax is Treetop.load(filename) instead of a file object

<apeiros_> nooodl: I'm pretty sure treetop allows reading syntax from a string too
<apeiros_> so something like Treetop.load_string(ScriptFile.read(path)) would work
<apeiros_> (I made the name `load_string` up - just in case that wasn't clear)
<nooodl> oh, it's `load_from_string`
<nooodl> i had to look for it in the code myself, the documentation doesn't really handle it :/

<xmt> burgestrand
<xmt> that's my question
<burgestrand> xmt: if you change the opacity of an element, all its’ children will inherit the same opacity AFAIK
<burgestrand> xmt: and not inherit in the sense that you can override it
<xmt> right
<xmt> so then is there this 'background' object?
<xmt> that lets you set alpha on IT
<xmt> and not on the root view
<xmt> background simply being a property of the root view
<burgestrand> xmt: yeah, sure, but for CSS we don’t have objects, we have layers
<burgestrand> xmt: usually it’s done by setting a transparent background image on the top layer
<xmt> ok
<burgestrand> or, well, bottom layer, depending on how you put it :)
<xmt> burgestrand, so every entity is composed of several layers?
<xmt> background is one?
<burgestrand> xmt: background is simply a property of an element
<xmt> is a property a layer?
<xmt> i'm trying to get the terminology/basic concepts right
<xmt> high level
<burgestrand> I think it’d be easier with an example
<xmt> would you be willing to whip something up?
<burgestrand> xmt: yeah, in a min, just remembered I’m trying something for becom33
<xmt> i'll wait
<xmt> just flash me when you have it ready?
<burgestrand> becom33: how strict is this? could you do uri.sub(/id=(\d+)/, 'id=3')?

<josemota> hi everyone, I'm trying to build a rack app with Rack::Builder but the docs suggest I create a new instance of it. How can I define my own Server class and use it? Can I say something like: class Server < Rack::Builder; map '/' do; end; end?
<xmt> burgestrand, i guess you're mine now
<xmt> burgestrand, i would love to see 2 examples. example 1: parent view is alpha .5, red, and has a blue child view. example 2: parent view has a background layer with .5 alpha and red, with a blue child view
<xmt> would be cool to see how css literally does the layering/alpha/color/etc
<burgestrand> xmt: save it as an .html file and pop it open in your browser

<notbrent> robert_: i was thinking about using it for a project yesterday, but their site, presumably built on padrino, was throwing some nasty passenger errors.. and even now they just have a drop-in static index, the rest isn't functional :O
<robert_> eh?

<robert_> oh that whole "Cache blablah" earlier
<robert_> yeah
<notbrent> yesterday it was full of passenger errors though, the index wouldn't even load
<robert_> ouch
<notbrent> kind of ironic for a web framework site
<robert_> Passenger fails then :p
<robert_> heh yeah
<robert_> it's like php errors on php.net :P
<notbrent> hehe, so i just ended up using sinatra
<robert_> heh
<notbrent> yeah that's the one, mongo errors
<jlogsdon> oh mongo...
<jlogsdon> when won't you crash?

<ampex> granted I haven't thrown massive workloads at it

<jlogsdon> ampex: we had lots of issues with our setup at my last company. Sharding was not working correctly (finally got that fixed), and mongos would have to be constantly monitored and restarted at least once a day as configs would get out of sync somehow
<zalesz> hey, could someone help me with gems c-extension function ?
<jlogsdon> We also had it randomly delete all of our data after a failed transfer from... mysql? to mongo. it was half-way through and took 3 days to run :(
<jlogsdon> (there were no deletes in our script, but im not sure of the specifics of the issue. but i think it had to do with the safe-write settings)
<Okasu> are you sirius about padrino?
<Okasu> if i knew about nanoc earlier, i'd never touch sinatra shit
<Okasu> sinatra generate html over and over again, eats a lot mamory and pretends to be simple light framework
<Okasu> nonsens
<jlogsdon> Okasu: static generators are only good for, well, static sites!
<jlogsdon> and practically everything i need/want a framework is not static
<jlogsdon> great for a blog, I guess?
<notbrent> hehe exactly
<Okasu> jlogsdon: thanks KO
<Okasu> but sinatra generates html for each request
<jlogsdon> then use caching, its not hard.
<Okasu> for what
<Okasu> maybe just not to use sinatra?
<jlogsdon> okay, or i can use what i enjoy and works well for me :)

<Okasu> have tried nanoc?
<jlogsdon> i've no issues with it generating content on the fly... if it's a higher-traffic site, i can cache output just fine. but that doesn't work well for highly dynamic sites
<jlogsdon> no, i have no use for it. it's not for dynamic sites
