<lunra> Has anyone tried to get the rk3188 (especially the radxa rock) to a really high clock rate? I understand most operations are memory-bound but I'm curious given that it's on a 28nm HKMG process

<mosquito520> lunra: Hm? what kind problem that you meet on frequency??
<lunra> I do not have a problem. I don't have an rk3188 device yet, I'm just curious if anyone has tried
<lunra> Sorry

<mosquito520> lunra: it can run 1.8GHz maximum, but that will affect by temp and other condition
<mosquito520> and... due to some reason, so mostly RK3188 device that you can see in the market, the max clock rate set to 1.6GHz
<mosquito520> also, it's will affect by DVFS and temp.
<mosquito520> and affect by how cpu loading.
<mosquito520> for example, if 1 core busy, and the temp reach 60 degree, the max clock rate will be limit 1.4GHz
<mosquito520> if 2 cores busy, the temp reach 50 degree, the max clock will be limit to 1.4 GHz
<mosquito520> sorry for my poor english, and hoping that answering your question:)
<lunra> I understand :)
<lunra> So, frequency is thermally limited... I wonder if cooling the chip with a fan will allow for higher peak performance, like if someone compiled something
<lunra> Though I guess that is a bad example because overclocking doesn't tend to improve compiling very much.
<lunra> In my experience, anyway

<mosquito520> lunra: actually, even if you add a heatsink, it will be really helpful...

<mosquito520> tablet with rk3188 usually design without heatsink, cuz they have bigger PCB to lower heat of chip
akaizen has joined #linux-rockchip
<mosquito520> and dongle usually add a thermal layer(i don't know how to describe it in english) into chip and case to decrease heat

<mosquito520> the other question, does overclocking improve compiling performance, that should be relative with a lot thing, like cpu performance of course, also memory performance, IO performance...

<mosquito520> But if you're compiling by Rockchip SOC, or try other thing by Rockchip SOC
<mosquito520> remember check the clock if you re wondering why that does not give you expect performance,

<lunra> mosquito520: 'thermal layer' makes sense to me, if you mean a layer on the PCB which is designed to absorb heat :)
