Hi! I'm testing sandstorm for oasis to see if my organization wants to use it. I'm trying to publish a ghost blog to a domain I own (gofig.xyz). I followed the directions in the app for setting up CNAME and TXT entries, but you can see the results at http://blog.gofig.xyz/
<grace_k>
Here's the error message: "Error looking up DNS TXT records for host 'blog.gofig.xyz': queryTxt ENOTFOUND"
<grace_k>
So it's clear I did something wrong. The support at namecheap, from whom I got the domain name, said everything was ok on their end. I have screenshots of everything I did I can share with anyone on here who can help me.
<grace_k>
Is there somewhere I have to register my CNAME within Sandstorm? I can't find anything in the manual. Thank you!!
<asheesh>
Hi grace_k !
<asheesh>
I just did the DNS lookup and things seem to be working OK from what I can tell.
<asheesh>
It seems to be a matter of waiting a short while for the DNS information to propagate, I suppose.
<asheesh>
If you still have the problem in about 30 minutes, then I would start to get worried.
<grace_k>
Thanks! This has been driving me nuts for almost 2 hours, but because I don't understand what I'm doing I have fiddled with the CNAME settings in my namecheap control panel within the last 30 mins. I will go take a 30 min walk.
<asheesh>
Hah, OK!
<grace_k>
Before I go, at ghost.io's version of the app they require "Now that you’ve got your CNAME record setup, you will need to associate the domain name with a Ghost blog in your account." In the sandstorm version, this is handled with the TXT record instead?
<kentonv>
yes, Sandstorm is different. Your DNS records look completely correct to me.
<edunham>
hi! I notice that nobody has packaged monitoring tools (nagios, icinga, et al) as Sandstorm apps yet. Is it a fundamentally bad idea to run such a tool as an app in the Oasis, or just a matter of nobody having taken the time to package them?
<dwrensha>
edunham: hi!
<dwrensha>
I've never used such tools, but I'm guessing that they work by periodically trying to connect to whatever the thing is that you're monitoring?
<asheesh>
We have this under-publicized API to defeat the sandboxing, called httpGet, which allows a grain to access any HTTP URL, if it does so via Cap'n Proto RPC.
<asheesh>
Now, admittedly, defeating the sandboxing is not really the point of it; being useful is the point of it. Tiny-Tiny-RSS uses it now.
<asheesh>
But I mention it because if you're willing to write a little bit of Python etc. using our Cap'n Proto RPC language, then you could make a simplistic one of those work right now.
<asheesh>
The other thing you'd need is the ability for apps to stay awake, which currently half-works.
<asheesh>
I say all this because I think if you have a proof of concept of a package, even if it only mostly works, then IMHO that would be very exciting.
<asheesh>
For more interesting protocols, you'd need a more complicated network driver. But yeah, it'd be super rad IMHO to use self-hosted Sandstorm or the Oasis hosting service to run a monitoring tool.
<asheesh>
Also hi edunham I think we met at Open Source Bridge about 2 years ago, maybe 3!
<asheesh>
Nice to see you here again.
<asheesh>
Well nice to see {here,again}.
<asheesh>
... +/- "you". Anyway.
<edunham>
asheesh: hi! also HTTPGet would work for most of the things I wish to monitor, though it doesn't really generalize to solving everybody's monitoring problems

One thing I love about Sandstorm is people can work on their own problems, not necessarily other people's problems.
<asheesh>
Although yes, solving other people's problems is cool too. (-:
