<iliveinapark> should mention that I'm running debian 6 and http_proxy is set correctly.

<dpswireless> noob question here. after pulling down a csv file with an http.get_response i am doing lines << response.body to add the the csv file to this array, the problem is it is taking the last line of code and putting it in the [0] element and not grabbing the rest. all i really need is one line of code to test anyways, but i need the top line and not the bottom. when it is a local file i can just
<dpswireless> run lines = File.open("user.csv").readlines and it adds each line into an element into the lines array. I guess my question is what would be the best way of doing that with an http get request?

<dpswireless> ahh thanks a_a_g when i was doing this last time i was still trying to run File.open instead of just plain open *smackshead*
<a_a_g> however, if you need to go beyond simple scripts, you need to understand some relatively advanced programming concepts. only then will you really understand what ruby is doing behind the scenes
<dpswireless> wifioregon, i picked up a ruby book on friday and am almost done writing a utility that my work can use to check to see if our customers files exist on their server and whether or not they have port 80 open on their firewall for the server, and also to check the validity of that file.
<dpswireless> it is very fun to start learning

<dpswireless> a_a_g: after pulling that file down off the web it is parsing the lines by \r and when i pull the file locally the line escape carachter is \n. if it matters i am using windows. anyways now it is not taking those lines and treating as seperate elements, it is just assigning the whole file as an array. when i pull it locally it takes each line and assigns it to an element of that array.

<shevy> which is a hash in Ruby.
<Gekz> require "json"; x = JSON.parse('{"foo": "bar"}') worked as you said

<Phrogz> It looks like RubyGems is up and running correctly; your only problem was that you assumed that gem search should search remote gems by default, when in fact it only lists local gems with the -r. You hsould be able to gem install nokogiri with no troubles.
<gyre007> Phrogz, mmm it looks like it DOES output a bunch of gems...so the important point is "-r" switch
<Phrogz> Yup.
<gyre007> Phrogz, so why is there REMOTE and LOCAL
<gyre007> Id have hoped that would've been something like yum.
<Phrogz> gyre007: LOCAL is what's installed on your machine; REMOTE is what is known about at rubygems.org (or whatever repos you have installed.)

<rexbutler> From the docs of BigDecimal: "The initial value, as an Integer, a Float, a Rational, a BigDecimal, or a String."
<rexbutler> Which leads to this question: why doesn't x = BigDecimal.new(5) work?

<wallerdev> a browser that runs ruby along with javascript?

<m4dc0d3r> the www is a bad implementation of what we have or could have as desktop apps
<wallerdev> are you writing a gui app in ruby?
<m4dc0d3r> nowdays making a desktop app could be easier than writing a website
<m4dc0d3r> since there are no servers to pay for

<wallerdev> yeah but you still need to pay for hosting then
<m4dc0d3r> also servers is a vague term
<m4dc0d3r> they could be random people

<m4dc0d3r> "i want to run my pc for money"
