<Airwave>
I've got it connected to a wall charger, and it says "connected by USB," but it seems to either be charging very slowly or not at all. I read that the USB port on the N900 often gets damaged. How can I find out if it's actually charging?
<DocScrutinizer51>
first make sure you're using a proper Nokia-compatible charger
<Airwave>
Okay.
<DocScrutinizer51>
it needs a short between the (middle two) data lines
<DocScrutinizer51>
on USB
<DocScrutinizer51>
worst case you can carefully strip the isolation from a USB cable and short the white and green wire

So it's the cable that's special, not the wall plug?
<DocScrutinizer51>
to check if USB jack is OK, you connect the N900 to a linux PC and see if it shows up in dmesg resp sysloh. Or (when OS on N900 is OK) you can connect to any PC and see if it shows up as storage device
<DocScrutinizer51>
(special) depends
<Airwave>
I plugged it in with the wall plug and the cable I got with the phone. I'll leave it plugged in for a while and see what happens.
<DocScrutinizer51>
sure
<Airwave>
If not, I'll check dmesg.
<DocScrutinizer51>
did you connect the device to any PC?
<DocScrutinizer51>
if not yet, you should try that first
<DocScrutinizer51>
the device should ask you '"C Suite or Mass Storage?" and the PC should detect a new "memstick"
<DocScrutinizer51>
whenn you select Mass Storage

<Airwave>
I didn't try that yet. I'm just gonna let it charge for a bit first.
<Airwave>
It did ask the PC Suite or Mass Storage when I connected it to the wall charger though.
<DocScrutinizer51>
rather test connecting to PC first
<DocScrutinizer51>
hmm that indicates that it doesn't see the data line short and thus will fall back to 100mA charging since it thinks it's connected to a PC that is non-responsive
<DocScrutinizer51>
you can charge this way, but only when you shut down all power hogs like screen backlight etc
<DocScrutinizer51>
a real PC will charge faster that this particular wallcharger
<Airwave>
Looks like it's charged way better now that I connected it to the USB cable that I got with the phone.
<Airwave>
Should I avoid flashing it when it's low on battery, or won't it matter since it's plugged in anyway?
<DocScrutinizer51>
no, never flash with low battery
<Airwave>
Okay.
<DocScrutinizer51>
(actually it won't allow you)
<Airwave>
Okay.
<Airwave>
I'll plug it into the PC.
<DocScrutinizer51>
good plan :D
<Airwave>
;-)
<DocScrutinizer51>
you'll also see if PC detects a storage device
<DocScrutinizer51>
if it does, your N900 is basically OK regarding UB
<DocScrutinizer51>
USB even
