<juri_>
hmm. I'm having trouble with what's starting to smell like the SPI driver on the H3.
<juri_>
using a lepton module in it only works for a short time, then the video stream stops. resetting the lepton's power doesn't let it restart, removing and re-installing the spidev module doesn't do it, restarting the binary that reads the device doesn't do it..
gsz has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
<juri_>
rebooting doesn't fix it.
<juri_>
only a full power cycle of the board (not the sensor) fixes it. and then, only for a few dozen frames.
<juri_>
I'm going to try replacing the cabling, assuming that is driving something nuts.

ok, it was crappy cabling. stuff fell apart in my hands.

<asdf28>
does anyone know if the device tree system in newer kernels is mandatory? or can you still use the old system with BIN and FEX files?
<KotCzarny>
yes
<KotCzarny>
mandatory
<asdf28>
oh... thank you
<asdf28>
do you have a newer kernel (4.x) installed on an allwinner board?
<KotCzarny>
but it's a matter of copying values into some similar dts
<asdf28>
i have a strange issue on newer kernels, there is no framebuffer device /dev/fb0
<KotCzarny>
you probably miss some config option
<asdf28>
it started with kernels that use the device tree system
<asdf28>
i have read some forum posts that mention that you have to have an HDMI screen connected, or else there will be no framebuffer device added
<asdf28>
i cannot test it because i only have a CRT screen connected
<asdf28>
it would be great if someone with an allwinner board could test it for me, disconnect your HDMI screen, reboot and see if /dev/fb0 disappears
<MoeIcenowy>
mripard: is there any way to deal with two kinds of possible DSI panels attached to the same mainboard?
<asdf28>
it is strange because i seem to be the only one with that problem, and probably the only one without an HDMI screen, so i think this could be the issue
<MoeIcenowy>
(The controller chip of K101-IM2BA02 is said to be EoL, so PineTab prepare to switch to K101-IM2BYL02, which has ILI9881C controller
<KotCzarny>
what board it is?
random_yanek has quit [Quit: random_yanek]
<asdf28>
KotCzarny you mean me?
<KotCzarny>
yes
<asdf28>
it's a banana pi m1 (allwinner a20)
<asdf28>
do you know which driver is responsible for creating the framebuffer device?
random_yanek has joined #linux-sunxi
<asdf28>
i have noticed that there is a new driver in the new kernels, sun4i_drm
<asdf28>
it did not exist before
<KotCzarny>
why dont you just get armbian?
<asdf28>
i am, but the distribution does not matter
<asdf28>
any distribution that uses a kernel newer than 3.x has this problem
<asdf28>
it's also strange because i could not find any image for this board that uses a newer kernel and has working video drivers
<asdf28>
all available images for this board are headless
<asdf28>
so i suspect others could not get it working as well
<KotCzarny>
i can hardly believe it
<asdf28>
yes, it's very strange. i also believe it is only this specific chipset (Allwinner A20)
<asdf28>
"A20/sun4i Broken CLK handling: If u-boot does not have HDMI enabled, the clock halving bit on the hdmi pads is not set, and then the logic goes awry."
<asdf28>
but i do not understand what this means and if this has anything to do with the framebuffer device
<mru>
I'm running u-boot without hdmi (or any display) support on an A20, and it's just fine once the kernel loads
<asdf28>
mru are you running a specific distribution?
<asdf28>
and you do have a device /dev/fb0?
<mru>
5.4.stable kernel
<mru>
fb0 is there
<asdf28>
there is no distribution? you built the operating system yourself?
<mru>
it's an openembedded build
<asdf28>
that is interesting, i have never heard about that. it seems to be for very advanced users
<asdf28>
could you share your output of lsmod and dmesg? that would be very interesting to see
<asdf28>
it would be very helpful to compare it to mine
<asdf28>
i am getting this error in my dmesg: [ 13.263159] [drm] Cannot find any crtc or sizes
<asdf28>
and the module sun4i_drm is not loaded, i think this module could be responsible for the framebuffer device
<mru>
there's probably something wrong/missing in your devicetree
<asdf28>
and the graphics driver says this:
<asdf28>
[ 14.030641] lima 1c40000.gpu: IRQ ppmmu2 not found
<asdf28>
this sounds like there is something wrong in the device tree, yes
<asdf28>
mru is the sun4i_drm module being loaded on your system?
<mru>
yes
<mru>
and sun4i-drm-hdmi
DonkeyHotei has joined #linux-sunxi
<mru>
and various other drm stuff
<asdf28>
i will try to compare the IRQ settings from my old working system to the new device tree to see if there is a difference
<asdf28>
that's very helpful, thanks
<asdf28>
i don't have a single DRM entry in my loaded modules
<asdf28>
everything seems to have failed
<mru>
you need something like this in the DT: &de { status = "okay"; };
<mru>
and also for &hdmi
<asdf28>
what is "de"?
<mru>
display engine
<asdf28>
i have a node "display engine" and there is "status = okay"
<asdf28>
is this equivalent to &de?
<asdf28>
the & symbol is not present in these entries
