<Guest74993> oh wow
<Guest74993> it seems my boot problem is with U-boot itself
<Guest74993> mainline kernel boots either from mmc or usb, but legacy boots only from usb
<Guest74993> but then i tried loading U-boot itself over usb and having that U-boot load from mmc normally
<Guest74993> that works
<Guest74993> so i'm guessing that when the boot rom loads U-boot from mmc, it does not put it at 0x4a000000 the way sunxi-fel does
<Guest74993> and something gets clobbered

<skiboy> Is the Opi R1 a fairly new board?
loblik has joined #linux-sunxi
<skiboy> Huh. I guess it is fairly new. I check their store every so often for new boards. Thanks for the tip!
<Guest74993> couple of months is "fairly new" to you?

<pmpp> hi Guest74993, did you succeed to fel boot and activate serial gadget ?
<Guest74993> serial gadget?
<Guest74993> i do not have the uart adapter yet
<pmpp> otg uart
<Guest74993> usb does not work well
<pmpp> ah
fkluknav has joined #linux-sunxi
<Guest74993> my working hypothesis as to why legacy will not boot from mmc is that the boot rom loads the spl from mmc into an incompatible memory location
<Guest74993> assuming the spl does not relocate U-boot, this is bad
<pmpp> could be cma reservation too mmc uses it
<Guest74993> but it's legacy that cares, not mainline
loblik has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<pmpp> yeah cma is for legacy o
<Guest74993> any idea where the spl is loaded?
<pmpp> no i did not have time to look at that A33 got it a week ago
<Guest74993> A23 would likely be similar, and others, maybe H3
<Guest74993> another issue is that the legacy kernel does not finish booting when it boots

<ullbeking> skiboy: I guess it depends on relative factors ;-) The OPi series is almost dead to me until they re-release OPi+2E. OPi Zero is always useful and I’ve a few of those to be sure, but until I can get a proper, non-buggy +2E into my hands I’ll be looking elsewhere too.
Andy-D__ has joined #linux-sunxi
<ullbeking> skiboy: also, yes R1 is relatively new. I read on the Armbian forums last night there have been design issues that have made it into production.
<ullbeking> KotCzarny: do you know what the story is with R1?
<KotCzarny> which one?

<marble_visions> all, just how unstable would you say mlc nand is with linux mainline?
<marble_visions> since there is some support
<marble_visions> but i can't tell from the maintainer's slides just how good that support is

<Guest53353> marble_visions: idk whether my nand is mlc, but i tried adding it to the dts (probably incorrectly) and dmesg recognized a chip by Hynix, but ECC failed. this is on A33

<marble_visions> Guest53353: i mean, if it came that far in the detection, maybe you need a dts tweak for the ecc
