<andre4s> this is my last try that have worked on other ubuntu machines and i only reconfigured some lines to point to the zImage insted of the uImage of the tutorial http://nopaste.linux-dev.org/?1162090
<pmpp> usually with root=LABEL=some_ext4lbl kernel will find the partition on any device supported or uuid too
<andre4s> hi pmpp
<andre4s> i have the first partition as a ext4 partition
<andre4s> so normaly the mainline kernel >=4.x entry looks right for me
<andre4s> but still does not getting any success
<pmpp> but you use fixed /dev/sda which may be good or not you can't be sure of that
<pmpp> eg an usb mass storage could take that sda
<pmpp> armbian use UUID to find root partition
<andre4s> ok, so i should add the UUID of my root partition on my hdd instead of using /dev/sda1?
<pmpp> probably would help
<miasma> you can't boot with UUID without initramfs
<andre4s> i am very thankfull for any hint that makes my pi boot again from my hdd ;)
<pmpp> if kernel is able to load driver for the disk it *will* find the root part
<pmpp> they show label or uuid method
<andre4s> hi miasma
<miasma> hi
<andre4s> thakns for that hint
<miasma> UUID requires some userspace support from initramfs
<pmpp> right
<andre4s> the line with the initramfs-linux.img doesnt exist in the tutorial that i have red :>
<andre4s> but i was thinking to add it by myself without any success
<pmpp> but booting without ramdisk is harder
<miasma> you could read the kernel logs to see what the hard drive device file was, if there's any info
<andre4s> afterwoods i commented it out because of thinking that it has only a test ;)
<andre4s> the thing is that i do not understand uboot at all
<miasma> uboot initializes the device so that it can load the kernel and boot it
<andre4s> i have imagin that the 0x490000000 and 0x46000000 is the order how the bootloader tryes to interact
<miasma> they're memory locations for the files you loaded
<andre4s> so have been right that i choosed 0x4800000000 for the initramfs to make it load before the kernel tries to boot?
<andre4s> ah ok
<miasma> if you want to load initramfs too, replace the '-' with 0x4800000000 and uncomment the initramfs line
<andre4s> but the bootm command act that the lines get loaded sequently
<andre4s> perfect
<andre4s> so my idea havent had so wrong ;)
<andre4s> thanks for the hint
<andre4s> will try it
<andre4s> these are my first days working with uboot and i think i am still to newb for it :>
lurchi_ is now known as lurchi__
<andre4s> ok, should be right like this? http://nopaste.linux-dev.org/?1162091
<andre4s> normaly i do not need the sunxi 3.4.x part because i am running kernel 4.13.3 on the arch which is installed on the hdd
<miasma> also if you're creating the initramfs yourself, you might need to translate it with 'mkimage -A ${UBOOT_ARCH} -T ramdisk -C ${INITRAMFS_COMP} -n uInitrd -d ${INITRAMFS} ${INITRD}'
<andre4s> ok, good to know
<andre4s> the initramfs have been created automaticly of my archlinux
<andre4s> i didnt created it by myself
<miasma> if you've compiled sata support in the kernel, it should find rootfs from the hard drive even without initramfs
<miasma> otherwise the drivers might be stores as modules in the initramfs
<miasma> *stored
lurchi__ is now known as lurchi_
<andre4s> the boot.cmd that worked to boot from my sdcard is the same like in the archlinux tutorial and looked like this: http://nopaste.linux-dev.org/?1162092
<andre4s> ah ok
<andre4s> did not knew this
<andre4s> with the booted arch on my sdcard that uses the same kernel there is no sata module loaded and i am able to access the hdd
<andre4s> looks like it is compiled into the kernel
<andre4s> by the way, sorry guys for my bad english
<andre4s> i hope its more or less understandable what i am writing :D
<andre4s> these are the modules that are loaded on the system that is running on my sdcard and i am able to access the hdd. so looks like there is no sata module in the initramfs, right? http://nopaste.linux-dev.org/?1162093
<andre4s> i am so happy guys to have someone to talk about that, because my last days have only been a shot in the dark
fugitive_ has quit [Ping timeout: 248 seconds]
<andre4s> should i use the UUID or the PARTUUID in the boot.cmd?
<miasma> both probably work
<andre4s> ok, here my cleaned and hopefully finally boot.cmd http://nopaste.linux-dev.org/?1162094
<andre4s> normaly should work like this?
<miasma> if it's zImage, should you use bootz instead?
<miasma> did it have some issues now booting?
<andre4s> damn, youre right!!
<andre4s> still not booting

<andre4s> have seen the same in the arch tutorial a second before you said it!
<miasma> so.. do you have a serial dongle for debugging?
<andre4s> no :/
<miasma> it would help a bit. they're quite cheap, something like $1-$2
<andre4s> but would be very nice to have to debugg it much more easier
<andre4s> really
<andre4s> can you post me one
<andre4s> the truth is that i know what it is but i have never seen one :D
<miasma> you could search for 'usb ttl serial' and buy one with dupont wires
<andre4s> ok, they cost something like ~15€
<miasma> um no
<andre4s> we are talking about these ones?
<andre4s> hehe
<andre4s> well, think i have to get one like these :>

<andre4s> ok, i should ask a few newby questions before i go on to make some things more clear.
<andre4s> on my old leemaker archlinux that worked only with the old kernel i got mmcblkp1 a vfat boot partition and mmcblkp2 have been the ext4 root partiton
<andre4s> on my archlinux now i only have one big mmcblkp1 as ext4 with root and boot
<andre4s> can this maybe cause my problems?
willmore has joined #linux-sunxi
<pmpp> maybe afaik boot.cmd file expect ext4 or fat parameter for loading initrd
<andre4s> the bootloader (u-boot-sunxi-with-spl.bin) has only been written to /dev/mmcblk0 ?
<andre4s> or do i have to write it to the hdd too?
<pmpp> on my board it is sdcard first, emmc second dunno about sata
<andre4s> think its the same here
<andre4s> so the bootloader has only been written to sdcard
<pmpp> probably and it is reading boot.scr from there
<andre4s> because after that boot.scr does not need the boot image on sda to boot of it?
<andre4s> i have a few udnerstanding problems with uboot
<pmpp> harddrive is probably called scsi 0:1
<andre4s> i am trained in booting linux from hdd on pc´s with lilo, grub, grub2 but this is my first arm board to hack on it

<andre4s> in a second i will post a link to the final boot.cmd that worked
<andre4s> ok, one of the 3 changes done the trick
<andre4s> 1: i reformated the sda1 partition with the Label rootfs like this: mke2fs -t ext4 -L rootfs /dev/sda1
<andre4s> before i have made only a normal ext4 partition without the label
<andre4s> 2: i copied the arch again because i havent been sure if the arch on the sda1 havent been only the unpacked ArchLinuxARM-armv7-latest.tar.gz
<andre4s> 3: some changes in the boot.cmd like using UUID instead of PARTUUID and i changed order in bootz comand
<andre4s> finaly this version worked: http://nopaste.linux-dev.org/?1162096
<andre4s> damn, i am so happy :D

<andre4s> ok, now i have a last understanding problem before i can start to configure my pi
<andre4s> the kernel is stored in the zImage file in /boot/zImage
ninolein has quit [Ping timeout: 246 seconds]
<andre4s> like its booting at the moment the uboot will automaticly load the zImage stored on mmcblk0p1 and boot it
ninolein has joined #linux-sunxi
<andre4s> if i do a kernel upgrade with my archlinux it will store the new zImage on /boot/zImage on sda1
<andre4s> so the uboot will all the time load the oldkernel and the updates doesnt work
<pmpp> don't forget initrd too
<andre4s> so i have to mount mmcblk0p1 as /boot/ partition
<andre4s> or isnt it a good idea
<andre4s> where is the initrd stored?
<andre4s> damn, forgot everything because i am working since years with systemd
<andre4s> :>
<pmpp> 3 things could need upgrade uboot in first sectors of sdcard, zimage and uinitrd ( usually in /boot )
lurchi_ is now known as lurchi__
<andre4s> so i HAVE TO mount the mmcblk0p1 as boot in the fstab on my sda1
aalm has joined #linux-sunxi
<pmpp> or bind mount /boot to /boot
<pmpp> it is not /boot like grub2
<andre4s> because while debugging my new setup with new uboot i found out that i have never done this on my old setup with old ubootand leemaker kernel
<andre4s> how do you mean bind it
lurchi__ is now known as lurchi_
<andre4s> i only can bind things that are present in the filesystem
<pmpp> eg mount /dev/mmcblk0 /mnt/disk ; mount --bind /mnt/diskl/boot /boot
<andre4s> and at the moment after the boot process mmcblk0p1 isnt mount to any place
<andre4s> ah ok
<pmpp> mount /dev/mmcblk0p1 /mnt/disk
<andre4s> but whats the difference to mount it directly to boot? :D
<pmpp> you'll end up with /boot/boot/zImage
<pmpp> could confuse updater
<andre4s> yeah, at the moment
<andre4s> until i separate the system on the sdcard to (mmcblk0p1 = boot; mmcblk0p2 = root) ;)
<andre4s> good idea to work with the setup that i have until i get borred and get some time to do the separation ;)
<andre4s> thanks again
<andre4s> so this have been one of my worst errors that i havent had a mounted the boot partition on my old setup
<andre4s> :D
<andre4s> thank you mate
<andre4s> because i got so frustrated in the last days
<andre4s> its not a joke that i stucked in boot process more than 50 times in the last days and had to recover my sdcard with my laptop
lurchi_ is now known as lurchi__
<miasma> you don't need to store stuff in /boot inside the boot partition
<miasma> just mount the sd partition to /boot
<miasma> the paths can be configured in boot.cmd
<andre4s> that have been what i liked to explain ;)
<andre4s> sorry i think sometimes my english isnt very clear and i get confused xD
<andre4s> hmmm strange, for testing i deleted the content of the /boot/ folder on sda1
<andre4s> still everything there in the boot folder on mmcblk0p1
<andre4s> now my pi is booting, nic gets link, my router said that it got the same ip like all the time but now i get a connection timeout while trying to connect to it on ssh
<andre4s> so looks like it is using the boot folder of sda1 too while booting with sda1 as rootfs
<andre4s> hmmm
<andre4s> if it is like this maybe it isnt a good idea to mount mmcblk0p1:/boot to /boot on sda1
<andre4s> now i do not understand anything
<andre4s> its responding my ping
lurchi__ is now known as lurchi_

<martinayotte> @MoeIcenowy : do you have any plans to bring you AXP803 patches from Kernel into U-Boot ? That seems needed to have OPiWin get DCDC1 and USB1-VBUS to allow U-Boot booting from USB
<smaeul> I have USB booting on OPi Win without any u-boot patches
<smaeul> martinayotte:
<smaeul> er, I do have a patch, but not to do with AXP
<martinayotte> @smaeul , thanks for the hint, but maybe I misunderstood something : USB doesn't have power when U-Boot doing scan, I've done a patch for USB1-VBUS, but it still rely on VCC-5V regulator which is enable with DCDC1 of the PMIC. Did I missed something ?
<MoeIcenowy> I think DCDC1 should be defaultly on
<MoeIcenowy> It's for 3.3v IO power
<MoeIcenowy> otherwise you will be not able to access UART if DCDC1 is not on
<martinayotte> Ah ! Ok ! Then I will try @smaeul patch and giving back result as soon as possible ...
