<buZz> it seems the 'phoenixa20' had two line-ins
<willmore> Doesn't mean they're any good.
<willmore> Pick one with an I2S bus and find a A/D that you like.
<willmore> Or some kind of USB device. Probably lower quality, but much easier software/hardware setup.
<kilobyte> unlike output (where "audiophile" snake oil salesmen will lie to you -- no human can discern anything above 44100Hz 16bit, thus any not completely broken modern DAC will deliver perfect quality), input is way trickier and can be done wrong

<Pepsifan> Hi! I try to use my BananaPro (SoC A20) with LVDS Display (and Can-Bus). It's working with "Raspbian For BananaPro", Kernel Version : 3.4.103 with use of banana_pro_10.1lcd.fex file. This Kernel is old and unsupported, is it possible to run with Kernel 4.x ?
<Pepsifan> (In the wiki the A20 and LVDS is marked as completely(?) unsupported, but it works on the mentioned Kernel)

<willmore> kilobyte is correct. Don't go crazy. Anything over 48K/16 for playback is crazy, but this was specifically about A/D and in capturing audio, you have gain issues and most cheap audio inputs will have horrible noise floors and frequency response.

<Pepsifan> Where I find the differences that cause the incompatiblity? I also tried to dist-upgrade the Raspbian, which only upgrades the packages, not the Kernel...?

<wens> Pepsifan: 3.4 is based on a vendor kernel with various fixes and cleanups
<wens> mainline is mostly newly rewritten code
Hao has joined #linux-sunxi
<Pepsifan> Okay. If I get it right in the MainlineHowTo: If in the Table http://linux-sunxi.org/Linux_mainlining_effort#Status_Matrix my use-case is marked as NO, there is no support for the mainline Kernel?
<wens> correct
<Pepsifan> So, if I want to use it, I have no choice and have to use 3.4
<wens> correct

<Pepsifan> Ok. I want to run this device for years.. And want to get best support oft security patches as possible. I've tried to set the apt sources to debian 9: Stretch - and did apt update and dist-upgrade. It seems to work. Can that get wrong in future with that old kernel?
Hao has joined #linux-sunxi
<wens> no idea
aidin has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
<mripard> and you're very likely to not have security updates
<mripard> or bugfixes.
<wens> you should ask distros if it's a good idea to run a very outdated and unsupported kernel
<wens> (the likely answer is no)
Hao has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<Pepsifan> The support of Stretch means the Packages (=UserSpace), right? I wonder if most patches apply to UserSpace, so the kernel wouldn't be the problem in most cases?

<ullbeking> What is the longest an OPi has been known to run for? Do they get stress tested?
<KotCzarny> they are quite stable
<KotCzarny> those allwinner socs in general
<KotCzarny> as long power is good and no big interferences
<ullbeking> KotCzarny: I will be investing in a good quality USB charger, see this...
<KotCzarny> um
<KotCzarny> if you prefer good power get real psu
<KotCzarny> i like meanwell rd-65a and rs-50-5
<aalm> yeah, charger!=power-supply.
<KotCzarny> real psu will have real specs pdf
<KotCzarny> then you can evaluate the application in your project

<KotCzarny> keep in mind chargers dont care about stability much because phones usually have builtin safety regulators
<ullbeking> Yeah ofc
<KotCzarny> ullbeking: keep in mind other pieces of your setup
<KotCzarny> i power 2 hdds, fan and usb hub from that psu
<ullbeking> Oh sure
<KotCzarny> i had plans to put 12V monitor too, but my desk space ended
<KotCzarny> but if you are lazy that anker thing might be enough

<KotCzarny> just get on google and search for: charger dissection
<KotCzarny> you will get a view what and why is important
<KotCzarny> lots of fun stories too
<aalm> it might require certain 'handshaking' via usb to give out the max etc.

<ullbeking> Right. None of this is surprising
<KotCzarny> many 'branded' devices might perform suboptimal under heavier loads
<ullbeking> Yes, like Anker

<anarsoul> mripard: so what's the point in putting pinmux configuration of differnt SoCs for sunxi video into a single function?
<anarsoul> pins are different, so resulting function will be abusing ifdef a lot
<anarsoul> it's hard to read and prone to mistakes
rany has joined #linux-sunxi

<anarsoul> that's how it's done in sunxi_display today
<mripard> so that you have a single, common function
<anarsoul> btw, that's a good example how ifdef should not be used
<mripard> instead of multiple instances of them that are slightly different and are going to be a pain to maintain
<anarsoul> mripard: not a bit of it will be used on A64
<anarsoul> mripard: sunxi_display is already a pain to maintain
<mripard> it was kind of my point, every bit of it should be used on the A64.
<mripard> yep, indeed

<mripard> and again, my point. By avoiding ifdef, you create yet another slightly different variation of it
<mripard> which is worse
<anarsoul> 15 lines
rexxster_ has joined #linux-sunxi
<anarsoul> 9 of these are for preprocessor
chlorine has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<mripard> if it was just a matter of lines, we wouldn't have that argument in the first place
<mripard> because adding an ifdef is 2 lines.
<anarsoul> right, and it would be 17 lines
<anarsoul> 6 of which is actual code
<mripard> and then, when you'll have to add an extra function that does something, instead of one single place to add that function call, you'll have to know that there's two, find both, and edit both
<mripard> if you fail at one of those steps, you just got yourself a regression / bug
<anarsoul> nope
rexxster_ has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<anarsoul> you choose what platform you're fixing bug for
<anarsoul> and fix it there
<mripard> that code is common
<mripard> it's the same device
chlorine_ has joined #linux-sunxi
rexxster has joined #linux-sunxi
<anarsoul> OK, then shouldn't pinmux configuration for all the devices in all Allwinner SoCs be moved into common code?
<anarsoul> it's not the same device, sunxi_lcd.c will never be used e.g. on A20

<anarsoul> anyway, calling sunxi_gpio_set_cfgpin() in a loop is not something worth moving into common code

<mripard> it's mostly the case already
<mripard> see for example
<anarsoul> yeah
<anarsoul> unreadable
<mripard> and like you said, if we want to rework it, it's going to be for pinctlr
<MoeIcenowy> P.S. finally DE1 should also migrate to DM Video
<MoeIcenowy> Legacy Video is legacy and obsolute
<MoeIcenowy> it's kept because no one is doing the migration :-(
<anarsoul> because no one is touching bootloader until it works fine
<anarsoul> make me unsee this :(
<anarsoul> why didn't you make something like pinctrl init arrays and feed it to some function
<MoeIcenowy> maybe you mean "if it works fine"
<MoeIcenowy> yes we are lazy to change bootloaders ;-)
<anarsoul> this spaghetti pinctrl init is just terrible
<MoeIcenowy> I think apritzel made some common code
<anarsoul> mripard: OK, I'll wait for pinctrl driver to be ready.
<anarsoul> if it ever becomes ready

<anarsoul|2> mripard: it should have been done like this: https://dpaste.de/HGJa/raw
<anarsoul|2> honestly speaking, board/sunxi/board.c is one big hack, good luck maintaining this.
<mripard> anarsoul|2: it was done way before pinctrl was even considered in uboot
<mripard> so yes, if we had to do this today, we would probably do something like this
<mripard> but this is what we have.
<KotCzarny> code refactor ahoy?
<mripard> KotCzarny: be my guest
<KotCzarny> anarsoul: now is your chance, go for it
<anarsoul|2> nope, my u-boot branch works for me
<anarsoul|2> I'm OK with maintaining ~10 patches
