<libv> mnemoc: wiki says "No space left on device (28)"
<libv> Turl: ^
<libv> the partition mounted at / seems full and the wiki does not seem to like that
<libv> ah, right, i did have root access
* libv is going to stop nginx for a sec so he can move an error log out of the way and get some space again
<libv> proper solution is to have log rotation do its job
<libv> on .err files as well

<jlbhshluekg> did usa intelligence supply isis with weapons like they did with al-qaeda to justify creating wars?
<jlbhshluekg> did usa excute the creative mess in the middle east like they said they will, does the creative mess include explosions with uncertain responsibles to create wars?
<jlbhshluekg> plz, send my qs to help limiting usa & israel aggression against others& may then lessen number of people killed in the middle east.

<ssvb> libv: there is a stub page here - http://linux-sunxi.org/SD_card_based_installer
<ssvb> yes, a conservative failsafe dram setup is one thing
<ssvb> another thing is just simply replacing ifdefs and doing runtime soc type detection in the u-boot code
<ssvb> conceptually it is a very straightforward change, but still rather invasive because the u-boot code is now really infested with ifdefs
<TheLinuxBug> That would be nice
<TheLinuxBug> Instead of having to build a new u-boot for every device
<ssvb> TheLinuxBug: in the end it is still necessary to build u-boot for every device and stockpile these binaries on the same sd card
<ssvb> because you want to have full support for your hardware, not just a bare minimum which is sufficient to boot it
<TheLinuxBug> true
<ssvb> installation of the real u-boot is done after the universally bootable stub identifies which u-boot build is expected to work better
<mnemoc> but you are only detecting SoC, not board (dtb)
<ssvb> mnemoc: the users get a list of somewhat sane choices (already filtered by the soc type and dram size)
<mnemoc> :)
<mnemoc> fair enough
<mnemoc> can dram be re-initialized after the exact device is chosen?
<ssvb> this requires a reboot
<mnemoc> ah, ok. so it's only during installation
<ssvb> well, so far it was a simple demo, which just installs u-boot, based on the user's choice
<ssvb> this can (and eventually should) also use same safety measures, such as setting up a watchdog for ensuring that the selected setup is bootable
<ssvb> reading NAND is also possible for retrieving some information for board identification or even complete configuration
<ssvb> Skylark has documented some interesting things here - http://linux-sunxi.org/NAND#More_information_on_BROM_NAND
<ssvb> TheLinuxBug: the biggest problem is that the sunxi u-boot maintainers do not see this as a useful feature :-)
mauro has joined #linux-sunxi
<TheLinuxBug> lol of course not
<ssvb> it only offers a safeguard against user errors

<ssvb> well, taking care of all these little things is what made raspberry pi extremely popular
<TheLinuxBug> ya
pmattern has joined #linux-sunxi
<ssvb> btw, the raspberry pi and raspberry pi2 can naturally boot from a single sd card image
<TheLinuxBug> that wasn't the case from the start
<TheLinuxBug> if you were using an older image
<TheLinuxBug> I tried that when I got my Pi 2
<TheLinuxBug> and couldn't get it to load
<TheLinuxBug> I believe if you use their newest loader though
<TheLinuxBug> it can work on both
<ssvb> yes, nobody can envision the future
<TheLinuxBug> Yeah there is a lot of options for A10 and A20
mauro has joined #linux-sunxi
<TheLinuxBug> so far I have enjoyed A10 but not so much A20 yet
<TheLinuxBug> would love to have the budget for A80
<ssvb> implementing this feature in the bootloader once the rpi people started maintaining both boards was an obviously useful thing :-)
<ssvb> Allwinner hardware has a major advantage over what Raspberry Pi can offer because it exists in so many form factors
<ssvb> of course, this advantage can be only leveraged with a proper bootloader
<TheLinuxBug> true
<TheLinuxBug> its a pain to have to write a new uboot for A10 -> A20 etc
<TheLinuxBug> Cause I have several of both and I can't just switch out the cards

<jackdaniel> hmm, doesn't brom try to load u-boot from two different offsets on nand?
<jackdaniel> ... nvm
<ssvb> jackdaniel: yes, according to what http://linux-sunxi.org/NAND#More_information_on_BROM_NAND says, it is probing many possible NAND configurations and many offsets
<jackdaniel> yes, but I was answering with nand to question about sd cards and different boards - you can't swap nand between a10 and a20
<jackdaniel> <-- dumb
khuey|away is now known as khuey
<ssvb> jackdaniel: if a device is bootable from NAND, then we can be sure that NAND can be read by a unified bootloader too
<ssvb> jackdaniel: do you mean that the lists of supported NAND configurations are different for A10 and A20 BROM?
<jackdaniel> ssvb: no, just mixed two questions in my head
<ssvb> was it more like that the script.bin file retrieved from nand is likely to be a correct one because nand is not easily swappable?
mauro has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
<jackdaniel> hm, I'm not booting device with legacy method
<ssvb> jackdaniel: what I'm saying is that if we have a random nand equipped android device and boot it from the installer sd card, then some of the infromation can be potentially retrieved from nand
<jackdaniel> oh, that makes sense
