i created an image with debian wheezy - and it boots to the console. however, when i try to load lcd, sunxi_gmac and ump it doesn't do anything, just puts the cursor to the next line and keeps blinking (e.g. doesn't return)

lsmod on another tty shows the modules as loaded, though

also try using "ip link" whilst plugging and unplugging the network - you should see status changes DOWN or UP

mripard_: small timer patch coming your way...

technically g2d acceleration is still available but no idea if that's used and if the system picks the accel type or it depends on the function the application calls
<Md>
I wrote a guide which shows how to install a sunxi system (specifically, a Cubieboard) from scratch without using cross-compilers, qemu or a FAT partion. comments are welcome: http://www.bofh.it/~md/sunxi.html
<rm>
that's no the server kernel, "-v-" indicates a "video" kernel
<Md>
rm: also, do you mind adding the GPT partition table module to your kernel? it is very useful for a NAS...
<rm>
not the *
<Md>
shame on me then :-(
<Turl>
hramrach: once they're on the list ping me and I'll pick them up
<rm>
Md, "CONFIG_EFI_PARTITION=y"
<Turl>
I need to refresh it now that -rcN started again
<rm>
GPT should be supported
paulk-collins has joined #linux-sunxi
<Md>
maybe this is a sunxi-specific issue then?
<Md>
[ 15.016724] Dev Sunxi softw411 sda header bad for all MBR copies, MBR corrupted or not present.
<Md>
[ 15.028384] sda: unknown partition table
<Turl>
why is it using the aw mbr on a sata disk?
<Turl>
(or whatever non-nand thing)
<Md>
it's a USB disk, BTW
<hno>
[7], linux-sunxi defconfig is a bit more generic than the SDK only-android-matters-and-only-on-tablets one.
<Turl>
besides some of our drivers have been unified and therefore config names have changed
AreaScout has quit []
<hno>
Md what partition table types have you enabled in your kernel?
<Md>
but I can see that I had the same issue with the 3.0.76 one from the hwpack
<hno>
Md, you don't want to dd over the mmc. Better to do a TRIM.
<hno>
Md, a guess is that the AW partition code comes before GPT and fails in such manner that no other is tried..
<Md>
hno: good point
<hramrach>
Turl: I can give you a branch.
<Md>
but I see that fstrim fails on the cubieboard, does a SD actually support TRIM this way?
<hramrach>
Turl: and how do you tell the disk is a nand at block layer? It's just a block device so you scan it for every partitioning scheme you know. And when you loop-mount your nand backup image it gets the partitions scanned as well
hramrach has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<hramrach>
hmm, actually excluding the top patches regarding leds
<hramrach>
I was trying those on top because I finally got a block device
tomboy64 has joined #linux-sunxi
<hramrach>
hno: each partitioning scheme is tried in turn
<rm>
Md, I wonder why do you recommend that people mkimage an uImage themselves
<rm>
I upload it next to the .deb
<Md>
rm: why not? this saves a download and now I will add sunxi support to the flash-kernel package
<rm>
"the plan" is to some day integrate uImage into the deb itself
<rm>
ok
<Md>
rm: no, flash-kernel does this on Debian systems
<rm>
I was thinking just to make kernel-package carry one extra file to /boot
<Md>
if you are interested in making a more debian-like kernel package then I suggest that you replace make-kpkg with the debian kernel team's debianization
<Md>
hramrach: I was looking at check.c indeed, does it use a "last match wins" logic?
Black_Horseman has quit [Quit: Αποχώρησε]
<hramrach>
it uses first mach wins - you see the notes about some layouts being placed before msdos
<Md>
then I do not understand why GPT is not recognized since sunxi_nand*_partition are last
<hramrach>
anyway, the AW scheme does not match so whatever order is tried does not matter
<hno>
Md, worked for me when I last tried.
<Md>
can you see a workaround or do I have to wait for the fix?
<Md>
hno: fstrim: /: FITRIM ioctl failed: Operation not supported
<Md>
(with rm's kernel)
Black_Horseman has joined #linux-sunxi
<hramrach>
Md: do you have GPT support compiled in?
<hno>
Md, which filesystem?
<Md>
hno: a luks device, actually
<Md>
hramrach: yes, it's rm's kernel which has it
<Md>
hno: no, ignore
<hno>
blkdiscard is more appropriate for erasing a card before partitioning.
<Md>
hno: it's just ext4
<hramrach>
I would not expect anything that goes over USB support trim
<Md>
hramrach: no, this uses the built-in SD reader. so mmcblk*
<hramrach>
never tried trim on that. Would not expect SD cards to support that
<hramrach>
it's an ATA command after all, not mmc
<hno>
MMC have a similar operation "WRITE SAME".
<hno>
Err, memory failure. WRITE SAME is the iSCSI one. MMC/SD have ERASE.
<hramrach>
hmm, I don't have anything running sunxi kernel atm so can't test coexistence of sunxi and gpt partitioning
<hramrach>
but don't see any reason why that in particular would fail
<hramrach>
there is like dozen partitioning schemes in distro kernels and they work
<Md>
hramrach: I will try any test you feel are appropriate...
<hramrach>
if you really want to get test if it's the sunxi partitioning scheme you can build a kernel without it
<hno>
Md, luks by design do not support TRIM (or any other operation that would leave gaps in the used space)
<hno>
but should work if it's ext4.
<hno>
bare.
<Md>
hno: actually it does (not by default but there is a discard option you can use with some caveats), but I am not using luks for the root
<Md>
hramrach: it's not a bug, the disk label is not recognized on my laptop either. the only explanation I can think is that the failing sheevaplug corrupted it
<hno>
Md, interesting. Did not think the luks people would accept doing trim/discard.
* hno
wonders if there now also is the option of not automatically prefilling the device with encrypted garbage.
