<rperier> hi all
<Avasz> Astralix1: I was unable to download Ian's ubuntu completely, it just stops in the mid. But I downloaded Radxa's debian. Flashed and able to boot in the mk908II that was not booting picuntu yesterday.Seems like it doesn't have an X. Wifi is not working. Now downloading Ubuntu trusty from Radxa. Any idea if I can flash it with ap6210 drivers?

<dlezcano> is there someone who can give me a hand to install an ubuntu rootfs on the nand flash for a rk3288 EVB ?
<dlezcano> naobsd: do you have 5 mins ?
benja` is now known as benja
<naobsd> dlezcano: try to flash kernel.img into kernel partition and flash boot.img on my miniroot page into boot partition
<naobsd> dlezcano: then you can get shell on serial console
<dlezcano> naobsd: ok, thanks, will try
<naobsd> dlezcano: ah, you have to put rk30xxnand_ko.ko.3.10.0 into ramdisk (boot.img)
<naobsd> wait
<naobsd> NAND? eMMC?
<dlezcano> nand
<naobsd> dlezcano: your evb use NAND?
<dlezcano> naobsd: yes
<naobsd> oh
<dlezcano> I just want to do kernel hacking
<naobsd> is "rootfs on NAND" required for it?
<naobsd> you may make rootfs on SD or USB storage
<dlezcano> not necessarly but I have android always booting
<dlezcano> I can use SD, sure
<naobsd> if you flashed my miniroot boot.img into boot partition, android will not boot
<AstralixNB> naobsd, I checked you description of building an SD card image.
<AstralixNB> Look fine and I'll try after getting my rootfs assembled.
<dlezcano> naobsd: btw, do you know why autoboot delay is still 0 even if I recompile u-boot with the boot delay set to 2 ?
<AstralixNB> But I am missing a certain information... What special token is required on the SD so the Loader accepts it over the internal NAND?
<naobsd> dlezcano: I never tried u-boot command prompt yet, maybe #define CONFIG_BOOTCOMMAND "booti" does something
<naobsd> AstralixNB: RK3288 with NAND?
<AstralixNB> Nope, 3188 with NAND
<naobsd> on RK3288 with eMMC, eMMC is prior than SD
<dlezcano> naobsd: ok
<naobsd> AstralixNB: http://androtab.info/radxa_rock/sdboot/ <- bit old
<AstralixNB> Yes, that is what I refer to
<AstralixNB> I wonder what I have to assemble in which way, if I like to create my own image for an SD card. I see the addresses and such.
<naobsd> AstralixNB: what is "my own image"? kernel? loader?
<AstralixNB> veerything
<naobsd> well
<AstralixNB> May be I only have a missing link in my mind...
<naobsd> AstralixNB: world after parameter is loaded from SD, it's same as NAND
<AstralixNB> The SD must have a token somwhere, so the RK-Loader detects the SD as bootable...
<naobsd> ah
<AstralixNB> ups!
<AstralixNB> parameter.img!!!! I haven't seen it...
<AstralixNB> I need some glasses!
<naobsd> well
<naobsd> mmmm
<naobsd> I want more time :(
GriefNorth has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
<naobsd> AstralixNB: see README.txt in my zip
<naobsd> AstralixNB: mask rom read sector 64 on SD, if there is header, mask rom try to boot from SD
<naobsd> AstralixNB: boot from SD = load DDR init from sector 68, load loader from sector 92
<AstralixNB> Ah, that answers all my actual questions.
<naobsd> AstralixNB: then loader (generally) load parameter from 0x2000 sector, and load kernel from 0x2000 + offset of boot/kernel partition(=described in parameter)
<AstralixNB> Yes, I see
<naobsd> AstralixNB: it seems RK proprietary loader checks sector 65
<AstralixNB> In my mind there was this missing link: How can you boot from a different media without beeing able to pass a different kernel command line. And how does the loader detect the bootable media
<AstralixNB> Now this is clear to me. Cause I only knew that 29xx, 31xx and 32xx can boot from eMMC/SD by mask-rom loader
<naobsd> header, ddr init, loader encryption can be done with openssl/split command like as https://gist.github.com/sarg/5028505
<AstralixNB> Yes, I decoded these loaders some far time ago and I even disassembled it...
<AstralixNB> But I had no time to tweak out these nifty details.
PaowZ_ has joined #linux-rockchip
<AstralixNB> I was decoding the init parts for getting ddr and initial timer setup in kernel going.
<naobsd> dlezcano: do you know how to modify boot.img? my boot.img is rkcrc-ed one, not mkbootimg-ed
<naobsd> dlezcano: my rkutils/rkunpack command can remove rkcrc header, then you can get cpio+gz ramdisk from boot.img
<AstralixNB> naobsd, thanks for the zip.
<naobsd> dlezcano: and you can make boot.img with rkcrc -k (cpio+gz) boot.img
<naobsd> you may use mkbootimg
<naobsd> but if you'll update kernel frequently, it's better to split kernel image and ramdisk image

<karlp> AstralixNB: those sd magic header bits is what I was trying to write up here: http://linux-rockchip.info/mw/index.php?title=Boot_Sequences#SD_Boot_2
<karlp> after interviewing naobsd myself :)
benja is now known as benja`
<AstralixNB> jap... there is the usual open source problem.... thousand places of docu, thousand places mostly right...
<naobsd> karlp: "first 81920 sectors (40MiB) are reserved for ..." is not correct here. that is about my "parameter" file, not generic
<dlezcano> naobsd: what is the difference between what does u-boot and miniboot ? It isn't possible to jump in the u-boot shell and set the bootargs parameter to boot on a SD ? like any other boards
<AstralixNB> but thanks karlp, I keep that in mind too... After building and documenting I update all places I find
<karlp> naobsd: that's what the "(reserved size can be modified by mtdparts information in parameter" at the end of the line is meant to be saying
<naobsd> dlezcano: as far as I understand, RK u-boot cannot boot from SD/USB/etc like any other boards
<naobsd> karlp: there is no standard parameter file, those numbers are pointless
<karlp> documenting the "parameter" file nicely would be pretty great, so many options there
<naobsd> karlp: careless people just believes only "first 81920 sectors are reserved" part...
<naobsd> s/believe/memory/
<naobsd> dlezcano: ah, my miniroot is not mandatory of course. you may use another initramfs which reads kernel command line, and you can change command line by parameter
<naobsd> I just like my miniroot
<dlezcano> naobsd: actually, I would like just flash my freshly compiled kernel (done), boot it (done) and this one taking root=/dev/mmcblk1p1 into account to boot the OS (not done)
<dlezcano> naobsd: right now, when I do that, it just ignore my kernel boot parameter
<dlezcano> naobsd: which make me think u-boot script is overridding the settings
<naobsd> my miniroot ignores command line ;)
<dlezcano> naobsd: this is why I was looking to change the u-boot's env
<dlezcano> naobsd: I guess if u-boot can't boot the kernel from somewhere else than the nand, at least the kernel can boot the OS from the SD, no ?
<dlezcano> naobsd: without passing through minicom
<dlezcano> s/minicom/miniboot
<naobsd> dlezcano: after kernel run, you can use any storage supported by kernel
<naobsd> for rootfs
<dlezcano> naobsd: ok, but if the kernel command line is ignored and can't specify any root
<dlezcano> this is where I am stuck
<naobsd> my miniroot just ignores root= in command line, but there are other initramfs
<naobsd> my miniroot (ab)use misc partition to store configuration
<dlezcano> naobsd: I also tried with an initramfs embed in the kernel but it still boots android
<naobsd> see showenv/editenv/saveenv on my miniroot page
<dlezcano> I feel I am missing something :)
<naobsd> but some tweak may be necessary to support rk3288
<naobsd> ^in my miniroot
<naobsd> dlezcano: anyway you can use any linux initramfs
<naobsd> dlezcano: you'll need to add rknand.ko if you want to put rootfs on nand

<karlp> I'm sure there are kernels around that have it, but it's not like a single magic "bluetooth" kernel
<kenguru_> can i ask one stupid question, when there is a tool for flashing those hdmi sticks, is there any for "backuping" the whole stick into the simple .img file?
