Using the 'embedded' version of ipfs node from the ipfs-companion extension, is it possible to connect to it with a config API like $ ipfs daemon?

i over heard that an external address only gets advertised after something like 4 connections have suceeded to it

but i get one the external ip/port in the list (i don't know if that means that I have successfully punched through the nat)

slicing?
<max12345>
chunking? what do you call it?
<voker57>
yeah
<voker57>
i don't think there's any documentation on that which is not code
<max12345>
I guess I want the white paper first then?
<achingbrain>
There's a gui that lets you explore the different chunking/graph strategies here: https://dag.ipfs.io
<voker57>
it's probably out of date much
<achingbrain>

I think historically the implementation of the file chunking/graph creation algorithms (e.g. UnixFS v1) predates the more serious specification efforts and currently people are spending more time specifying UnixFS v2

So I want to set up a raspberry pi on my local network and pin content to it, and whenever another device tries to download a piece of content, it checks the raspberry pi first to see if it has it, and if it does transfer only over the local network
<gratin>
basically i want to set up a local network cache
<gratin>
is there an easy way to do this?
<gratin>
does ipfs by default check local network nodes first?

oh wait, is link-local like 127.0.0.1?
<Mikaela>
no, it's autogenerated address that just works within that LAN
<Swednec8>
or is it just a block of reserved private addresses like 192.168.xxx.xxx?
<Swednec8>
oh
<Mikaela>
the IPv4 equivalent is 169.254.0.0/16 (169.254.0.0 – 169.254.255.255) according to that link, but you usually never see them unless things are broken, while in IPv6 every interface is autogenerated a link-local even if you had no native IPv6 connectivity to WAN
<Swednec8>
neat

i have seen 169.254.0.0/16 when trying to plug 2 pcs directly together
