hi, is noffle here? what was the resolution on https://github.com/ipfs/go-ipfs/issues/2278 ? is there a way now to force resolving of own keys to stay local and not go over DHT?
thomasan_ has joined #ipfs
ddahl has quit [Ping timeout: 268 seconds]
<redfish>
also, am confused about discussion there: aren't keys supposed to stay local to a node? why is there a need to check the network for publications with a key that the node owns? is sharing keys a relevant use case, even if technically allowed?

redfish, the default node key should be unique, but there's no reason you couldn't generate an extra key with a name and share it to multiple nodes you control
<lordcirth>
However, there are probably (niche) usecases for sharing the main key as well.

<redfish>
lordcirth: ok, so it's a reasonable use case then. thanks. ok then there won't ever be a resolve locally only feature..
<lordcirth>
redfish, there's no reason there couldn't be a simple config option for that.
ddahl has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
thomasan_ has quit [Ping timeout: 250 seconds]
<redfish>
yeah, on a second thought.. the use case of un-shared keys is the more common one, so maybe local resolution should even be the default, and then add an option for DHT resolution for advanced use case where you know the key might be shared so default resolve result might be stale, so you request to go to DHT via the argument to resolve
gts has quit [Ping timeout: 255 seconds]

<lordcirth>
On the other hand, when I first did 'ipfs name publish' I immediately did a resolve to see if it had worked.
<redfish>
just to summarize the above: resolve(h) { if is_my_key(h) and not options.dht then local_lookup(h) else dht_lookup(h) }

<redfish>
lordcirth: fair point. to check the publish result in dht users will need to pass --dht. It's logically ok semantics, but changes existing default behavior, so I don't expect that to fly... a --local though would be very helpful
ddahl has joined #ipfs
<lordcirth>
Yeah, I don't think what's default is very important as long as it's configurable and documented.
<redfish>
maybe i'll resurrect that PR but change it to --local, if that's not too difficult
<lordcirth>
Sounds good.
<lordcirth>
Try to leave things open for possibly having a config option that lists keys that should always be locally resolved

is it possible to use a gx project with go modules?

I'm thinking of trying to make a game that uses libp2p for networking, but the go command does not like me trying to reference libp2p as a module

postables[m]: How do you `ungx` the gx deps?
lordcirth_ has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<placer14>
I see this is a toy. And has no issues... is this widely used?
<postables[m]1>
i've used it a few times. Oh I forgot there's also another way in which you install your dependencies from github using `dep` like `go-ipfs` and then run `gx install --local` although that is a bit tricky at time
<placer14>
We're having a problem managing the ipfs deps and would love to ungx our project. Just worried about maintainability.
<postables[m]1>
what specific issue are you having
spinza has quit [Quit: Coyote finally caught up with me...]
<placer14>
dep doesn't persist gx deps.
<postables[m]1>
ah yes this is how i handle that atm
<postables[m]1>
if you're starting from the ground up, what i usually do is add your imports using typical go paths like `github.com/ipfs/go-datastore` and then when running `gx import` you'll want to say yes to the step which rewrites your normal imports into gx imports
spinza has joined #ipfs
<placer14>
It's not greenfield and I'm just casually searching for a way to solve the problem. Noticed your message. Will review your process and may ask some follow up questions later. Thanks :)
<postables[m]1>
np, you should still be able to use the workflow i mentioned in "start from the ground up", although I haven't tried that in a non-new project so I can't confirm if it would work
<placer14>
I'll let you know when I get around to experimenting.
