<voker57>
you have to trust ipfssearch that it extracted metadata correctly
<lgierth>
i guess you need to trust that the search index as a derivation of the original data, is derived correctly
<lgierth>
correctly and completely

<DokterBob>
I meant trust in the way that lgierth meant it.
<DokterBob>
You'd need a very complex mutual verification algorithm, maybe similar to how recaptch classifies *all the things*. Except in that case *nobody* has an incentive to give incorrect answers. In search there are *many* hostile parties.
<DokterBob>
It's just something I've spend few weeks overthinking, figuring the right incentives there is truly staggering and it might not be possible at all. The latter is what I hinted at in my remark about trust.

Well, were it a more client-side affair (IPFS-only), one would need to be concerned with the trust between individual parties that return results
<Kolonka[m]>
rather than ipfssearch bearing total responsibility for whether something is 'verified'
<Kolonka[m]>
but if you mean the trust between ipfssearch and the ones returning content to it, I see what you mean

Hi. Quick reference question. Are IPFS hashes associated with the peer who first created them?
xcm has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<lgierth>
nope
<lgierth>
there's no creators to stuff - just nodes who "have" it
<lgierth>
possession vs. ownership

<kpcyrd>
ctOS: I did something like that for archlinux a few years ago
<kpcyrd>
ctOS: I stopped using it myself because the latency was significantly higher than regular https mirrors
<ctOS>
kpcyrd: did you happen to document those issues somewhere? or write up your experiences?
<kpcyrd>
ctOS: I didn't, but I still remember them: 1) latency to receive a package was very high (to a point where pacman would give up and use the next mirror) 2) unpinning old packages required some work 3) archlinux has some very large folders, since sharding wasn't a thing you would need to store the whole directory listing in a single object, which has size limits (send a PR to increase it) and after you hit the
<kpcyrd>
network limit you're stuck
<kpcyrd>
I'm not sure if sharding was rolled out by now, but if it was you don't have to worry about that
