<ELLIOTTCABLE> hi
<purr> ELLIOTTCABLE: hi!
<ELLIOTTCABLE> katlogic: NSLd?
<ELLIOTTCABLE> joelteon: AH YOU'RE ON YOZ
<ELLIOTTCABLE> joelteon: is it as bad for you as it is for me? ;_;
<ELLIOTTCABLE> how are you successfully using it as an everyday computer?
<ELLIOTTCABLE> new Safari freezes the entire computer completely and totally when I click a link to a new page.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> opening System Preferences does the same, for about five or so minutes; and then once it's finally loaded and unfrozen, selecting a preference pane to open does the same, again.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> the computer as a whole is completely unusable.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> completely.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> ruined the next month of my life (or made it awesome? no computer? idk.) by impulsively upgrading. ddis
<ELLIOTTCABLE> no code for me.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> typing from my Windows gaming partition, lol. thx irccloud.
<purr> lol
<joelteon> ELLIOTTCABLE: system preferences works fine for me
<joelteon> safari won't launch
<ELLIOTTCABLE> whaaaaat
<joelteon> #MacOSX says my CPU is faulty (LOL)
<purr> LOL
<ELLIOTTCABLE> not just buggy, irreproducibly buggy!?
<ELLIOTTCABLE> also lol that channel
<joelteon> everything has been very interesting
<joelteon> i'm trying to rebuild stuff while coping with the lack of gcc

<vigs> welp didn't wanna start a flame war. >_<
<vigs> sorry ELLIOTTCABLE
<vigs> shawn can be/is often an ass :<
<devyn> vigs: what happened?
<vigs> devyn: someone tweeted something along the lines of "name someone from Alaska who isn't socially inept," so I replied with Elliott's handle, and that guy replied with "blocked him ages ago, NEXT"
<devyn> …ahahahahahahaha
<vigs> what? :o
<devyn> don't worry about it. ELLIOTTCABLE has seen worse.
<vigs> oh boy
<devyn> I doubt he cares anymore
<devyn> he has people who appreciate him
<devyn> that's all that matters
<devyn> :)
<vigs> his replies suggested he was upset :P
<devyn> wweeeeellll
<vigs> arg so get this: PS2 sends a scan code upon a key-down event. When the key's released, it sends a key-up code (0xF0), and then goes back to sending the previous code
<vigs> I have no clue how to detect multiple presses of the same key by this thing
<devyn> are you doing osdev, vigs?
<devyn> :D
<vigs> Nope, think lower level than that @_@
<devyn> lower level than bare metal?
<devyn> a microcontroller?
<devyn> lol
<purr> lol
<vigs> devyn: I'm working on my final project for Computer Design: we spent the quarter building a CPU with VHDL (a hardware description language). Now we're writing the Assembly that runs on this architecture.
<vigs> The thing is, I didn't work on my CPU for a solid month, so I had to catch up in a few days (super easy tbh), but that leaves me with, well, tonight to finish my project
<devyn> ah that's cool
<vigs> yup
<devyn> I've always wanted to do that
<vigs> It's pretty cool, yeah
<vigs> I love the prof, too. He's super chill
<devyn> I built a CPU-like thing in Minecraft with RedstoneBlocks once
<devyn> er
<devyn> RedstoneChips
<vigs> wow, that's cool
<devyn> I didn't have an assembly but I had a simple machine code
<vigs> I spent some time "studying" for my Digital Design class (digital circuits, etc) by building circuits in minecraft lol
<devyn> unless that's what you mean, or are you actually writing an assembler?
<vigs> no, the assembler was provided.
<devyn> ah k
<vigs> I considered bootstrapping an assembler, actually :P
<vigs> maybe if I had more time
<vigs> it'd be tedious and boring, tbh
<vigs> *all* the LUTs
<devyn> meh, I don't think it would be that complicated to write a simple assembler in a high-level language and then write it again in that assembly language and assemble it
<vigs> ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
<devyn> I actually enjoyed writing x86 asm when I did
<devyn> it was kinda fun
<vigs> lol
<devyn> haha
<purr> lol
<devyn> though I don't think I'd want to write an assembler for x86. it's a PITA architecture
<devyn> the encoding is ridiculous
<devyn> vigs: have you looked at this? http://wiki.osdev.org/PS/2_Keyboard
<devyn> when I was debug-printing PS/2 commands it looked pretty simple; not like you're describing
<vigs> yeah, but I think I might have to send a signal TO the keyboard and that's too much work for 1:30 AM
<vigs> I'm working on a workaround
<vigs> (that involves modifying the hardware to make the PS2 lines an inout)
<devyn> based on the debug output I got, no…
<vigs> ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
<devyn> though you will have to be able to send data to the keyboard IIRC
<devyn> but not for just reading keys I thiiink
<vigs> I'm gonna look into it after I got this working (sans multiple same-key presses)
<vigs> s/got/get
<devyn> vigs: http://i6.minus.com/ibhm10HPEZ1pCw.png - when I type aaaa I get 1e 9e 1e 9e 1e 9e 1e 9e
<vigs> devyn: yeah, but you're not pressing and holding ,are you?
<devyn> ohhhh yeah vigs when I do that I get 1e 1e 1e 1e … 9e
<vigs> based on the data sheets I read (and the stuff the prof provided), the key-up code is 0xF0, though .__.
<vigs> (mildly amusing because F-Zero)
<devyn> I never get F0
<vigs> yeah
<vigs> that's strange
<devyn> maybe a different mode?
<ELLIOTTCABLE> What
<vigs> Because my CPU definitely detects an F0 code on key-up
<vigs> hi ELLIOTTCABLE
<vigs> why're you up? .__.
<devyn> for all keys, vigs?
<vigs> devyn: oui
<devyn> hm
<vigs> ah
<ELLIOTTCABLE> was just cleaning out my mill a bit, and am now watching some teevee
<ELLIOTTCABLE> Was waiting for my phone to charge
<vigs> Isn't it like 3 or 4 AM? .__.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> … I vaguely want to take a video of my lab "booting up."
<ELLIOTTCABLE> I hit the wall switch, and about ten different pieces of equipment turn on, make noises, boot, or light up.
<vigs> ooh
<ELLIOTTCABLE> it's surprisingly impressive in a banal way.
<vigs> sounds very Iron Man-ish
<ELLIOTTCABLE> Just noticed it today, never really noticed before, because I usually have a goal when I go in there, lol.
<purr> lol
<ELLIOTTCABLE> LOL iron man
<ELLIOTTCABLE> well it's not THAT cool.
<devyn> ELLIOTTCABLE: I wanna see a video o.o
<ELLIOTTCABLE> Can't figure out how to prop up my iPhone to take it while I go take the shot. I need a gorillapod. :P
<devyn> I kinda feel that way when I turn on my desktop because it has a shitton of fans and lights and it's like ooo
<devyn> and a lot of heatpipes.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> bahhahah
<ELLIOTTCABLE> This setup would be cooler if it had that.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> It's got a laptop on a stand, and an external display over the bench-tool shelf
<ELLIOTTCABLE> but it's a Mac. Far less in line with all this gear.
<vigs> I need a desktop
<vigs> like, a badass tower
<devyn> good enough?
<vigs> rad
<devyn> recently got a second GPU
<devyn> not really intentionally but my friend didn't need it
<devyn> so I bought it
<devyn> heh
<vigs> nice
<vigs> I've made negative progress
<vigs> I should've made this a git repo
<whitequark> PS/2, why do you even use it
<whitequark> it's so absurdly obsolete.
<vigs> whitequark: because it's an available port on this development board that my CPU is on
<whitequark> -_-'
<vigs> fuck, I can't even get my interrupt service routine to output shit anymore
<vigs> fuuuuck
<vigs> half considering staying up all night at this point
<whitequark> have you poked the PIC after serving the interrupt?
<whitequark> you need to send EOI seq
<vigs> The hardware's fine
<vigs> I've tested that
<vigs> This is an asm problem, I'm like 98% sure
<whitequark> hm?
<whitequark> you need to send an End-of-Interrupt sequence to the PIC so it will raise the interrupt another time
<whitequark> or does it not even fire a single time?
<vigs> Well, first off, it's not a PIC. :P
<vigs> On the hardware level, interrupts are doing their thing: the Program Counter is loaded to point to the ISR, interrupts are disabled while that runs, etc.

<vigs> the professor came up with the architecture when he designed the course
