<msch> there is a default HTTP server - why? well I don't care
<msch> there is no SSH server running /o\
<msch> (just wanted to share my frustration)

<Cpt-Oblivious> msch: what's the performance like on the cubetruck?
<msch> Cpt-Oblivious I have no idea because I can't ssh into it
<Cpt-Oblivious> seems like a great small board to buy for lower power gbit
<msch> Cpt-Oblivious need to get to the local hackerspace tomorrow where they have hdmi/vga displays
<Cpt-Oblivious> ah lol ok
Baronawesome has joined #cubieboard
<msch> Cpt-Oblivious but it does start Apache by default. because that's what I need obviously
<Cpt-Oblivious> if you don't have a spare monitor I can see how it's impossible without ssh xD
<msch> Cpt-Oblivious I do have a spare monitor. but it's thunderbolt
<Cpt-Oblivious> :o
<Cpt-Oblivious> Yea that's annoying
<msch> Cpt-Oblivious can't tell you how mad I am right now
<Cpt-Oblivious> I have 4 monitors within arms reach :p
<msch> Cpt-Oblivious someone thought "hm... let's see I'll install Apache because it's good to have an HTTP server. SSH? Nope why would I need that"
<Cpt-Oblivious> hey that webserver is a lot harder to attack!
<Cpt-Oblivious> no ssh, so one less attack vector! :p
<msch> Cpt-Oblivious do you have a cubieboard 1 or 2?
<Cpt-Oblivious> I don't have one
<Cpt-Oblivious> But I did look at it when looking for a low power mini server
<Cpt-Oblivious> cubietruck wasn't out back then but was just announced
<Cpt-Oblivious> and I wanted gbit
<Cpt-Oblivious> I ended up going for a mini itx atom
Hackelin has quit [Read error: Operation timed out]
<msch> ah that's nice too :)
<msch> is it fanless?
<Cpt-Oblivious> nah very small one for the D525
<Cpt-Oblivious> but you don't hear it
<msch> k
<msch> I googled a bit about the cubietruck and I'm looking forward to using it
<msch> right now I've got a raspberry pi that I use
<Cpt-Oblivious> the 100 mbps is a large bottleneck
<msch> it is pretty slow but I don't do anything CPU intense
<Cpt-Oblivious> internet speeds are > 100 mbps here, so it's not usefull as download station + getting files off of it would be a pain without gbit
<msch> yep, on the raspberry pi even more because ethernet is done via on-board USB, so I have 2ms ping on the LAN
<msch> Cpt-Oblivious where is here? :)
<Cpt-Oblivious> netherlands
eebrah_ has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<msch> nice. I was in Amsterdam in October and I noticed that the Internet was fast but not that it was 100+ :)
<Cpt-Oblivious> well the average in our country is 38 Mbps
<msch> I found some cubietruck benchmarks that said it manages 500 mbit/s raw throughput btw
<Cpt-Oblivious> But a large part of that is that people don't care and stick with adsl when they can switch to cable. And 3g and such.
<Cpt-Oblivious> Nearly everyone can get 200/10 cable or fiber.
<Cpt-Oblivious> 500 mbit is really good for such a low power device
<msch> cool
<Cpt-Oblivious> nice
eebrah_ has joined #cubieboard
<msch> Cpt-Oblivious which exact mini itx atom setup do you have? I wanted to buy one some time ago but there are so many choices and some of them are barebones and some aren't and so on and that was overwhelming
* msch uses Apple stuff.
* msch doesn't like choices
<Cpt-Oblivious> I have a gigabyte-ga-c847n
<msch> ah but that doesn't come in a box and with RAM and a hard drive?
<Cpt-Oblivious> yep
<Cpt-Oblivious> I used a 8 gb ram stick I had laying around
<msch> I basically want this but with ubuntu: http://www.apple.com/mac-mini/ :)
<Cpt-Oblivious> a 2.5" laptop drive since I replaced the one in my laptop with an SSD
<Cpt-Oblivious> And I stuck it in a LC-Power LC-1340mi case
<Cpt-Oblivious> it's not much larger than that mac mini
eebrah_ has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<msch> yeah but I have to assemble it
<Cpt-Oblivious> took me 15 mins
<msch> and I just looked the case isn't sold by amazon directly but by a reseller on amazon --> hassle
<Cpt-Oblivious> oh yea, I bought it from a webshop in the netherlands.
<msch> the cubietruck was nice because it came with RAM and hard drive
<Cpt-Oblivious> Got delivered the next day.
<Cpt-Oblivious> Was pretty hassle free :)
<msch> I think all the non-amazon shops where I used to buy computer stuff are dead by now. I can't even think of any.
<msch> isn't the age of the self-assembled pcs completely over by now?
<msch> everyone either buys notebooks or tablets?
<Cpt-Oblivious> I'm not part of that group.
<Cpt-Oblivious> gaming sucks on notebooks / tablets
<msch> ah right that explains why the companies that sell that stuff didn't go out of business

<wolfy> msch: there is a nand-part tool available via forums. unfortunately there are several versions and , at least for me, only a very recent one worked correctly on cubie2
<msch> wolfy have you bookmarked which one?
<wolfy> no, but I can share it, i have a backup copy, if you want
<msch> wolfy please do
<wolfy> 1 min
<msch> sure
<wolfy> msch: mind that I used it on cubieboard2, I have no idea how does it behave on ct

<msch> wolfy and one more question: how does nand-part actually work? I didn't find any good documentation on what /dev/nand[a-e] actually are

<wolfy> I am not yet familiar enough with the hardware so I will refrain to speak about the similarity. however I guess you should read http://linux-sunxi.org/Cubieboard/Installing_on_NAND
<msch> wolfy thanks will do
<wolfy> and also look for patwood's posts in the miniand forum ( https://www.miniand.com/users/patwood )
<wolfy> his advises were the most appropriate for my use case
<msch> wolfy thanks again

<msch> anyone know a tutorial how to use nand-part to grow my partition?
<wolfy> msch: you need to repartition .
<msch> wolfy I used it to resize my nand setup into just nanda with the bootloader and nandb with the rest, that worked fine
<wolfy> that's it then
<msch> wolfy actually .... https://gist.github.com/MSch/4cef0eedaa6b2ee2841e does that look fine?
<wolfy> 8GB for 2nd partition, so yes
<msch> wolfy so I guess it's time to reboot and see if it works :)
<msch> and after the reboot do a resize2fs?

<wolfy> that's what I would try

<msch> let's see :)

<msch> worked :)
<msch> awesome

<wolfy> msch: what distro did you install ?
<msch> wolfy the lubuntu server image
<wolfy> and it worked from nand with just 2 partitions ?
<msch> wolfy and the resize2fs worked too :)
* msch is happy
<wolfy> interesting. I had to fiddle 3 days with partitioning and uboot to transfer a working install from sd-card to nand
<msch> wolfy yep it created 3 partitions with only 2 GB for the actual linux install and I resized it to have 2 partitions, keeping bootloader the same and extending rootfs
<msch> wolfy that was it
<msch> wolfy install of what? the lubuntu too?

<wolfy> and the cubie did not boot until i renamed a partition and wrote the android signature to another one
<msch> wolfy wtf

<wolfy> in my case the one i got best results with was linaro-quantal-developer-20130422-342-A20-3.4.61.img
<wolfy> but I am on cubie2 and I guess the firmware in ct is more friendly
<msch> wolfy but you are on a cubieboard2 right? because for the truck there's no 12.10 iirc
<msch> wolfy looks like it. I mean the tools are still horrible and the docs are really lacking but still it worked
<wolfy> it was a pain in the ..
<msch> wolfy I don't get it how people can create such awesome hardware and then create so bad software for it. same with the patched kernel stuff.
<msch> wolfy the raspberry pi people managed a lot better

<msch> wolfy wolfy btw, how long have you been using your cb2's nand? and have you been writing to it regularly? (e.g. log files?) I'm not really sure how long I should expect it to last, and I fear I'll brick the device once it's EOL
<wolfy> I flashed stuff onto it with livesuit like a dozen times or so
<wolfy> tested half a dozen distro images , rewrote after I screw it ...
<msch> wolfy ok so that's good. :)
<wolfy> i would not worry too much about it

<msch> wolfy yeah there's a lot of other things that are worse :)
<msch> like /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/00secure :)
<wolfy> uhm. I have not seen that
<msch> it's on my 13.10 server install
<msch> and it disables the whole deb-signing.
<msch> I have no idea what cubietech was thinking when they did that, because everything is correctly set up so that it works if you enable signing
<msch> that's just one of those crazy things I guess
<wolfy> i think i know the reason

<msch> yeah?
<wolfy> some ( all ? ) packages from linaro are not signed, or smtg like that
<msch> wolfy they all are, they are just signed with the linaro PPA key, but that key has been added to the trust store, so it all works (I checked)
<wolfy> i see. my system keeps warning
<msch> wolfy wait you're right I think
<msch> wolfy yeah the PPA key has been added but that's not the key for the packages, they really seem unsigned / signed with a different key
<msch> great work linaro...
<wolfy> mind that I am a centos/fedora guy so my experience in the deb world is quite limited
<wolfy> ( that is a polite way to say "close to zero")
<msch> :)

<kriegerod> it is said in FAQ that cubieboard is powerable by USB OTG port. What would happen if i plug in the power to OTG port while board is already powered by power port? Or what would happen if i plug the power plug while board is powered by USB OTG port? Would everything be working, at least not being damaged?

<bircoe> I've done it on a couple of occasions with my Cubietruck when flashing firmware and all was fine.
