<paul_boddie> Just great: rebuilt U-Boot from openwrt-xburst and now MMC-booting only gets as far as "mmc1 is available".
* paul_boddie hates U-Boot.

<eintopf> paul_boddie: try barebox
<paul_boddie> On the NanoNote?
<paul_boddie> I actually want to get something working with U-Boot elsewhere, though.
<eintopf> mhh, then you need to port at first. yep
<paul_boddie> Now I just have to figure out how to update openwrt-xburst using git. Sigh!
<paul_boddie> Or just clone the damned thing again for my own sanity's sake.
<wpwrak> get rid of it ? :)
<paul_boddie> Git, OpenWrt or U-Boot?
<paul_boddie> I thought people wanted to write their own nice bootloader, but I guess they didn't finish it.
<eintopf> paul_boddie: I think wpwrak opinion is more "bootloaders are useless"
<wpwrak> bootloaders are very useful - and should be extremely simple :)
wej has quit [Ping timeout: 248 seconds]
jwhitmore has quit [Ping timeout: 272 seconds]
<eintopf> so extremely simple would be "start kernel only"
wej has joined #qi-hardware
<wpwrak> yup, with some initramfs that does the rest
<eintopf> yea, I remember that
<paul_boddie> And not leave the hardware in some weird state.
<paul_boddie> Meanwhile, it's branch surfing time as OpenWrt fails to build its toolchain for some reason unknown to man.
<wpwrak> i would advocate that the kernel should try to initialize as much of the hardware as possible, to minimize its dependency on the boot loader
<wpwrak> you haven't experienced build failures if you haven't used OE ;-)
<eintopf> maybe when I have time, then I will the idea of kboot
<wpwrak> at openmoko, i was very happy when we got people who just took care of building the damn monster and making binary packages
<paul_boddie> OE and related stuff are just hateful, really.
<wpwrak> we seem to agree ;-)
<eintopf> what is OE
<paul_boddie> It's a relief in a way that Debian now actually has cross-compilers that work.
<wpwrak> OpenEmbedded
<eintopf> ah, ok
<wpwrak> kinda like gentoo. but very fragile. getting it to build (which took forever) was like winning the lottery
pcercuei has joined #qi-hardware
<wpwrak> and we had the perverse setup of building code under development inside OE. so each time the monster blew up, development stopped.
<wpwrak> well, that was for the application people. we also had a simple SDK that was sufficient for my kind of work. so i largely escaped :)
<eintopf> you could script yourself some image generation foo
<eintopf> and doing alle the cross compiling stuff
<eintopf> but that's more crazy
jwhitmore has joined #qi-hardware
<wpwrak> i made a rootfs builder that just installed pre-compiled packages and then added my stuff. that worked quite nicely.
<eintopf> pre-compiled :/
<eintopf> I don't like that
<eintopf> mhh
<wpwrak> well, there are so many bash variations you need :)
<wpwrak> and if keeps the build failures on the other side of that package repo
<wpwrak> s/if/it/
<qi-bot> wpwrak meant: "and it keeps the build failures on the other side of that package repo"
