<DracoDan> hoping someone here can help me hack a phone to run from an adjustable PSU instead of a battery, am I in the right place?
<DracoDan> back story: I'm trying to recover photos off my brothers phone, it's a droid ultra XT1080. The phone started showing weird battery issues before totally dying (it wouldn't try turning on for anything), so I removed the "unremovable" battery... The battery shows 3.31v (should be enough to work, right?) and now the phone at least TRIES to power on when plugged in, but as soon as it sees 0%
<DracoDan> battery it shuts off again. I have an adjustable PSU that have set to 4.2v and wired to the positive and negative connections where the old battery connected
<DracoDan> I cut off the old battery (it only had two connections, so I don't believe it's a "smart" battery)
<DracoDan> this.... isn't a general hardware hacking channel, is it? lol
<pcercuei> nope
<pcercuei> although I suppose some people here could answer that
<pcercuei> (not me)
<DracoDan> any suggestions for a better channel?
<DocScrutinizer05> well, you're maybe not completely wrong here
<DocScrutinizer05> anyway I didn't hear what's the problem yet
<DocScrutinizer05> so far all sounds conclusive
<DocScrutinizer05> 4.2V is maybe a itsy bit too high, I'd use 4.1 or even 4.0V
<DocScrutinizer05> and the PSU needs to provide at least 2A
<DocScrutinizer05> and you need to make sure the wires from PSU to phone are not flimsy
<DocScrutinizer05> when you say 4.2V I gather you must have a decent lab PSU, otherwise you couldn't adjust it that exactly
<DocScrutinizer05> so there shouldn't be a risk of this PSU providing massive overvoltage when not connected to load
<DocScrutinizer05> the phone may draw burst of 2A or even more, for several milliseconds, and the voltage at battery connector must not drop below say 3.5V during those bursts
<DracoDan> so... I wired the battery in parallel with the PSU (which is capable of a combined 10A) just to see what would happen... and the battery started charging!
<DracoDan> then I unplugged the power supply I was using in parallel with the battery and it continued to charge from USB?!
<DracoDan> maybe I kicked the battery high enough that the phone decided it was safe to try charging it?
<DracoDan> the PSU is NOT a fancy lab PSU, it's a chinese PSU I once used for a car computer, it has two "rails" each cable of 5A and can be set independantly to 3.3v, 5v, 9v, 12v or 15v, and then tweaked from there using pots
<DracoDan> I'm using 5v as a reference and 9v as the supply, then adjusting it up a bit
<DracoDan> I need a good lab PSU :-/
