<rqou> azonenberg: so, something interesting just happened
<azonenberg> oh?
<rqou> i was stripping a <redacted> to a bare pcb, but it contained a small blob of some plastic material encasing some of the components
<rqou> i was heating it trying to see if anything would happen to the plastic
<rqou> the entire plastic blob suddenly popped off the pcb
<rqou> and apparently took all the components with it
<rqou> still encapsulated in the plastic
<azonenberg> lol
<azonenberg> So you delaminated the pads? or melted the solder
<rqou> just melted the solder
<rqou> (exercise: ID the device from just this photo)
<rqou> answer via PM please
<rqou> also, this device is amazingly secure considering the target audience
<rqou> apparently good brands don't skimp on their low-end devices
<rqou> (also, there is definitely enough info to ID the device now)
<sn00n> cool
<sn00n> wanna look :[
<sn00n> what's that infineon thingy?
<rqou> go google it :P
<sn00n> okay
<sn00n> you could say or would we all be sniperd away then?
<rqou> because this is a "secure" device, i don't want to publicly state what it is
<rqou> but i gave plenty of hints to start guessing
<sn00n> *sigh* ok *google*
<rqou> "low-end device made by a brand that has a good reputation, containing a secure element"
<rqou> that's plenty
<rqou> :P
<rqou> "consumer-targeted"
<sn00n> okay usb security token?
<rqou> correct category
<sn00n> it's used by the NSA staff?
<rqou> i actually don't know whether they do or not
<rqou> presumably not
<sn00n> just guessing
<sn00n> hehe
<rqou> it's not a CAC
<sn00n> and now? decap it!111
<sn00n> :>
<sn00n> or what?
<rqou> eventually
<sn00n> "and now i sacrify u little more or less virgin usb sec token to the allmighty acid vulcano goddess! *drop*"

<pie_> azonenberg, im remembering this quite late but i was also looking for stuff on intermediate languges at some point and wasnt really able t find much :(
<pie_> "You can get tiny PIC/AVR microcontrollers in SOT23 packages, which are about 3mm square and the smallest thing you might realistically hand-assemble." wtf how does that even work

<sn00n> hm, simply solder it?
<balrog> pie_: paste, place, hot air?
<pie_> no i mean how do they fit any pins??
<whitequark> rqou: "certification up to emvco"
<pie_> or even a useful amount of pins
<whitequark> "nfc passive mode"
<whitequark> "mifare compatible"
<whitequark> i have like two obvious consumer products in mind and one sliiightly less consumer, which is what i think you're decapping

* azonenberg has hand assembled 0.35mm pitch WLCSP chips that were 2x2 balls and about 0.6mm on a side
<azonenberg> sn00n: Most high end scopes use asics
<azonenberg> i forget the specifics, one vendor uses entirely cots i think for low to midrange?
<azonenberg> pretty sure tek is all asic
<eduardo_> azonenberg: how about your registering with sam.gov

<awygle> Hey azonenberg you're outside a lot, can you recommend a very thin/light waterproof tarp?
<azonenberg> awygle: No
<azonenberg> I currently use the heavy blue plastic ones and am actually in the market for an upgrade myself
<azonenberg> The setup i see a lot of the guys in my unit using is a pair of different materials
<azonenberg> there's one that's thick and shiny mylar on one side and orange on the other that makes a good ground sheet and reflects some heat back up at you
<azonenberg> then for the top, thin nylon
<azonenberg> like tent rain-fly material
<azonenberg> The one problem with that stuff is water will wick through it if you touch it
<azonenberg> So you have to provide an air gap and not roll into it during the night
<awygle> Hm OK. I just need to cover my bike from the rain, tent fly material might be OK for that...
<awygle> I just don't want to lug my home depot tarp around everywhere I go lol
<eduardo_> azonenberg: are you still interested in joining the darpa call?
<sn00n> it's a tarp
<pie___> eduardo_, you guys callin darpa
<sn00n> 555-DARPA
<sn00n> "there's a collect call from DARPA on line 3"
