regarding the SG S2 brick bug, from what I could see "All kernels based on GT-I9100 ICS Update4 sources are SAFE (MMC_CAP_ERASE not present)" Does this refer to AOSP kernel, or to the official stock kernel as well?
<Jiangyi>
I believe stock kernels up to a certain version is safe.
<Jiangyi>
Most, if not all AOSP kernels on XDA should be safe now.

Hi! Due to a fortunate case I (temporarely) own two samsung phones: a i9100 and a i9100G. I want to decide which one to keep and I want to use cyanogenmod 10.
<pl>
The G version seems to be receiving more support (the cm10 M releases are available for the G version only), this mainly beause of the more friendly OMAP SoC, but I noticed that other things work worse on the i9100G
<pl>
The sensors reading are not good, for example the ambient light sensor is almost unusable
<xplodwild>
blamesamsung
angelsl has joined #teamhacksung-support

the G version shows way less RAM than the not-G version. I don't know why, was both devices should have 1GB of ram...

xplodwild, more then 300MB, when "only" 1GB is available?
<pl>
that could be possible, of course

My Galaxy Nexus shows 693MB, I'm not sad either
<xplodwild>
There are known issues about light sensors
<xplodwild>
We tried to hack them a long time ago
<xplodwild>
To no avail
<xplodwild>
but if I were you I'd keep the G
<pl>
xplodwild, bug isn't the light sensor on the i9100G the same of the i9100, that is the Capella CM3663v1?
sbrissen has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
<xplodwild>
nope
<xplodwild>
at least I don't think so
<pl>
at least that's what the androsens app says
Fissurez has joined #teamhacksung-support
<pl>
xplodwild, I tend to prefer the G version too, but with the sensors working in that way some things are almost unusable, for example the auto brightness...
<xplodwild>
well, there's ONLY the autobrightness..
<xplodwild>
I never used it on any of my device, regardless of it working or not
<xplodwild>
I think you can live without autobrightness
<xplodwild>
scrollbar swipe for light control is fine for me
reves has quit [Ping timeout: 246 seconds]
<pl>
xplodwild, I could live with that too, but still I don't like to know there is something that's not working as it should :)
<xplodwild>
there's way less things working on a i9100 than a i9100g..
<xplodwild>
i9100g only issue forever will be autobrightness
<pl>
xplodwild, for example?
<xplodwild>
i9100 has hwcomposer issues, audio issues, hdmi out not working, ...
<pl>
just to know..
<pl>
I've read about these issues, but I didn't found any detail about them
<xplodwild>
It's those errors you can't see but feel
<xplodwild>
Project Butter from Jelly Bean doesn't work properly on i9100
<xplodwild>
And we cry with the yamaha audio crap on every android update
chadouming has joined #teamhacksung-support
<pl>
and will never work? You're giving me a lot of interesting information, but I'd like to read some more details about what's wrong...
<bbqbot>
derp
<xplodwild>
hwcomposer sources are not updated by Samsung, and their blobs doesn't work properly with AOSP, so we can't fully support Project Butter
<xplodwild>
We have no sources about the Yamaha chip, that uses a proprietary interface not compatible with AOSP, so it breaks everytime AOSP changes something in Audio hardware API
<xplodwild>
same applies for HDMI

Jiangyi, I've just read your answer about the autobrightness on the I9100G. What about the light sensor readings?
<pl>
do you see the value vary inside the interval, or they just assume the values 10, 100, and maybe 1000?
<Jiangyi>
Sorry what?
<bollox>
anyway thank you all for helping me
<Jiangyi>
Hmm.... odd that 1004 worked and 1006 didn't,.
<Jiangyi>
Only thing I see there is a RIL change.
<pl>
Jiangyi, on the i9100 the light sensor output is a number theat varies between 1 and (day) 10000. On the i9100G the sensor output is just 10 or 100, and I think this is the reason for which the autobrightness doesn't work well
<pl>
for sure it works worse than on the i9100
<pl>
so, if you say it's working for you, I'm curious to know what's your light sensor output
<bollox>

Well I mean, my parents submitted the application for immigration back in 1999, and then one day in 2005, the Canadian government just suddenly said "Oh, you can come now even though it's 6 years after you applied!"
<Jiangyi>
:-P
<Jiangyi>
Process was really strict back then too

Jiangyi, I get only 10, 100 and 1000 from the light sensor. Maybe I didn't mention you I'm using cyanogenmod, if you're using the stock firmware it will probably work fine...
<Jiangyi>
Nah, been on CM ever since cody started testing it. :-P
<pl>
which version are you using?
<pl>
I'm happy to know it works for you
<pl>
but now I want it to work for me too :)
<Jiangyi>
CM10, 1104 build.
<Jiangyi>
Since sensor HAL is closed-source, it's always been wonky on AOSP.
<chadouming>
bealtine, well we are near alaska :P
<Jiangyi>
Plus the fact that Samsung seems to use over 9000 variants of components in their phones doesn't help. :-|
<bealtine>
jk
<chadouming>
9000 haha, more like 15656354658342354695834
<chadouming>
15656354658342354695835
<chadouming>
forgot one
<bealtine>
i'd like to go to Quebec sometime..
<chadouming>

<chadouming>

<bealtine>

<pl>
Jiangyi, which light sensor is on your phone? For me z-devicetest says Capella CM3663
<bealtine>
to hear the accents mostly

pl: Same here.
<bealtine>
used to Parisian accents:)
<Jiangyi>
Samsung sometimes would use the same model, but multiple different revisions.

<chadouming>
bealtine, hahaha, well we have more an english accent
<chadouming>
we "try" to pronounce english word in a english way
<chadouming>
so when time come for french word, well, we turn some letter in a english way
<chadouming>
if you to montreal, mostly everyone speak english tho
<pl>
Jiangyi, sorry if I bug you again. What's the "Maximum range" for the light sensor for you? Again z-devicetest provides it.
<Jiangyi>
Says 30000, but since Samsung's HAL only recognizes multiples of 10, it'll never say 30000.
<Jiangyi>
never report 30000*
<chadouming>
lol lol
<chadouming>
give away at radio
<chadouming>
hte girl doesnt know a thing about technology
<pl>
Jiangyi, now I put in under an extremely bright light and it reported 16000!
<chadouming>
say the iconica tab a100 is 1080p

._.
<chadouming>
iconia
<chadouming>
LOL
<Jiangyi>
Well, I could've sworn I read somewhere that it says it's only multiples of 10.
<pl>
Jiangyi, what I find strange is that the i9100 appears to have the same sensor (I own one), and there the range is 1-10000 and the resolution is 1lux
<pl>
well, it is a multiple of 10
<pl>
you mean powers of 10?
<Jiangyi>
derp, yeah.
* Jiangyi
's brain isn't working ><
<pl>
:)
<Jiangyi>
I would say Samsung did something different in the sensor HAL for the 2 devices, but don't quote me on that.
<pl>
but on your device the steps are: 10, 100, 1000, 10000, 16000(?), right?
<bbqbot>
derp
<pl>
I mean, the resolution is not 1 for you too...
