<kaktux>
hi there
<kaktux>
i got problems installing sandstorm
<Lord>
yes ?
<kaktux>
i followed the instruction - created a sandstom.io subdomain which i also can ping - but trying to open the given url in any browser doesnt work
<kaktux>
including chrome
<kaktux>
or chromium - as i am using an ubuntu based os
<kaktux>
chromium gives: ERR_ADDRESS_UNREACHABLE
<TimMc>
kaktux: What does your config look like?
<kaktux>
what do you mean by that? sorry - but its my first try with sandstorm
<kaktux>
i downloaded the script - used the default options as in the video https://sandstorm.io/install , created a subdomain, gave my email - and when the url to use appeared tried to open it - but without succes.. the ping command from the video works though
<TimMc>
kaktux: Well, perhaps ports are misaligned. Check /opt/sandstorm/sandstorm.conf (I think that's the path)
<TimMc>
and see what ports you have open on the server, and the router if applicable
<TimMc>
It sounds like maybe you're trying to use port 443 but cannot because something else is listening there, so you'd need to either use an alternative port or do some reverse proxying.
<derbastian>
Mh I ran the installer using curl https://install.sandstorm.io | bash and followed the instructions where I chose a sancats subdomain, but the installer quits with an E_NEVER_LISTENED-error
<derbastian>
i.e. I never specified any ports
<TimMc>
Well, what port would you like for the URL?
<derbastian>
I'd go for 6080
<TimMc>
(Traditionally one would go with a port ending in 443 if you're using HTTPS)
<TimMc>
If you wanted to advertise port 6080, you'd make sure 6080 was open on the server (or forwarded in the router) and you'd set HTTPS_PORT=6080
<TimMc>
or if you're going to use HTTP instead, PORT=6080
<derbastian>
well if I go with default ports I would chose 443 for https?
<derbastian>
I'll do that then
<derbastian>
sandstorm.conf now includes HTTPS_PORT=443 and PORT=80
<TimMc>
Just make sure that nothing else on the server is trying to listen on those first.
<derbastian>
I host other websites there and have nginx running so I think these ports are already being listened to
<TimMc>
You'll need to set up some kind of reverse proxy, then -- either Sandstorm can answer requests on port 443, or your other websites can.
<derbastian>
now that I changed HTTPS_PORT from 443 to 6080 the sandstorm service would actually start!
<TimMc>
That's beyond the scope of my experience, unfortunately, although I'm told it's not difficult to configure nginx for this.
<TimMc>
yup!

<TimMc>
So now it's not colliding, and you just need to figure out how to plumb the traffic through.
<derbastian>
unfortunate I can
<derbastian>
sorry
<derbastian>
too bad I cannot figure out how to make sandstorm reachable without having to specify a host
<syb>
It won't get through this point. What else can I do? I copied the old /opt/sandstorm directory so I can try to replace the new /var directory with the old data... but I expected a clean new installation. I don't know what could be happening now... :((
