Ta Asheesh :) dwrensha joined us at the time and answered a lot of questions. I'm not sure if it answered everything, but it certainly seemed to help.

Hey guys, is there a way to follow a link from one grain to another within the same browser tab? For instance I have one Wekan grain and one Gitlab grain, could I reference a wiki-page on the Gitlab grain by inserting a link (example, https://abcdef123abcdef123abcdef123.oasis.sandstorm.io/gitlab/repo/wikis/home) inside a Wekan card?
<Zertrin_>
I think the first part of the domain name is random and changes between restarts of the same grain. There must be another way to link (like sharing links) which is not random.
Zertrin_ is now known as Zertrin

In it's current configuration, `meteor-spk dev` freezes at "Downloading meteor-tool@1.1.10... "
jadewang has quit []
<asheesh>
sprin: Hi! I heard from someone that meteor's atmosphere was down a few days ago.
<asheesh>
I can test it out in a sec, but it should work in general. ETA 25 min for me being able to test it out.
<asheesh>
Do make sure you have the latest meteor-spk
jadewang has joined #sandstorm
<sprin>
hi asheesh!
<sprin>
yes, I do have the latest meteor-spk. I tried updating .meteor/release to the latest (METEOR@1.3.4.4)
<sprin>
and `meteor-spk dev` gets to "App is now available from Sandstorm server.", but the app hangs on the loader in the Sandstorm UI
<sprin>
the app seems to work outside of sandstorm, with `meteor` launching the app correctly
lukexj has joined #sandstorm
<sprin>
I've pushed my attempts to update Meteor and use meteor-spk
decipherstatic has joined #sandstorm
<sprin>
hmm, this may be a problem with some changes I made to the sandstorm shell. I see the same hang with Etherpad from the app market. I need to look into my changes.
<dwrensha>
I've got a `make update` hanging for the same reason, I think
<sprin>
dwrensha: A hang at "Finding meteor-tool installation (can take a few seconds)..." ? This is what I just encountered trying to rebuild sandstorm
<dwrensha>
yeah
<dwrensha>
`meteor show` is specifically what's hanging, under the hood
<dwrensha>
blocking on some sort of network IO
<dwrensha>
we really should fix this
<dwrensha>
or maybe file a bug with meteor
<kentonv>
I think sometimes it decides to download a meteor update or whatever
<kentonv>
but eventually it should complete?
<sprin>
To work around it, I hardcoded the correct path to meteor-tool
<sprin>
kentonv: I was seeing not net activity during the hang, and strace just showed epoll waits
<zarvox>
Meteor tried switching their CDN from Amazon's cloudfront to MaxCDN and have been having assorted issues.
<dwrensha>
I suppose Meteor's auto-update shenanigans help me better appreciate what people are complaining about when they criticize Sandstorm's installation/update story
<zarvox>
I think Meteor's failure here is that their human-facing tools cease to function when the network is down, when there's no obvious technical reason why they can't use their existing offline cached copy, but maybe I lack a full understanding of the complexity of the situation :/
<asheesh>
sprin: I guess you're still waiting to be able to download a new version, but I guess it works if you hard-code the old version, as you said. Is that an accurate assessment?
<sprin>
asheesh: yep! I am going back to see if sandstorm master fares better
<sprin>
I just got a more-or-less working sandstorm dev environment up this morning
<dwrensha>
is it possible that Meteor's new CDN is interpreting all of the traffic from Sandstorm as a DDOS attempt?
<zarvox>
dwrensha: what do you mean? Sandstorm servers don't contact Meteor's CDN for anything.
<asheesh>
i,i "see if they just distributed Meteor via the Debian package repositories they wouldn't have this problem"
<dwrensha>
I mean dev servers calling find-meteor-dev-bundle.sh
<zarvox>
Oh. I doubt it, but if it is, that suggests that they shouldn't make a network call on every "meteor show".
<zarvox>
Similarly, I'd expect network lookups for "meteor run", but for "meteor build" I'd only expect traffic if versions are unresolved

Hmm, with the last few builds I've made, any grain I start hangs at the loader icon. Any tips to debug? Grain debug log reports "...** SANDSTORM SUPERVISOR: Starting up grain ** SANDSTORM SUPERVISOR: Grain still in use; staying up for now."
<asheesh>
sprin: Hi! I would check the main Sandstorm log, plus 'ps auxw' to see if anything weird is going on.

Howdy reed, cool FSF IRC cloak!
<sprin>
but the browser seems to fail to connect to the grain subdomain
<reed>
asheesh, :)
<asheesh>
The IRC nick cloak thing leads me to learn you're an FSF webmaster, so that's cool.
<asheesh>
sprin: Hmm. One imagines that something you're doing is breaking HTTP communication in some way to the grain, then.
<asheesh>
You could strace the supervisor and see what happens when a request comes in.
<asheesh>
I believe David Renshaw has some experience with that.
<sprin>
hmm, I remember putting an entry for the domain into /etc/hosts. But I don't believe one can put a wildcard name there
<asheesh>
You can't, yeah; other options include dnsmasq, or xip.io.
<asheesh>
reed: Feel free to say what brings you here, or not!
<reed>
just lurking atm :)
<reed>
asheesh, i'm not an fsf webmaster... i have the cloak because at some point members could as for one and I did :)

dnsmasq solves the problem, I was using it before and forgot to configure it in this new dev VM ;)
<asheesh>
As a result of Kenton merging https://github.com/sandstorm-io/sandstorm/pull/2235 -- If the top bar starts to act weird, it's probably my fault, and I want to know, and I've done some testing, but stay alert.
<JonTheNiceGuy[m]>
How long until it drops out to clients?
<asheesh>
End of the week, so if you don't run code from git master, you won't see it until then.
<asheesh>
Typical release cycle is: Kenton ships new code during the weekend, and updates Oasis at the same time, and witihn 24 hours people's self-hosted servers update.
