Personally I like it that way. People talk when they have something worth talking about, unlike some channels where people talk no matter what ;)
<zarvox>
One wrinkle is that to protect users and admins from having harm come to them from potentially malicious apps, we don't grant network access to apps by default.
<zarvox>
An admin user can grant raw network access through an "IpNetwork" capability to a particular grain, though.
<lukexj>
ok
<zarvox>
The vision is that we write trustworthy "driver" apps which consume an IpNetwork and offer a Cap'n Proto interface representing the relevant protocol
<zarvox>
and then an admin can grant IpNetwork to a driver, and users can make grains that request the protocol through the powerbox, and get a connection from an appropriate driver grain.

how long has Sandstorm been in devlopment?
<kentonv>
since early 2014
<lukexj>
whats with the lack of apps in the market anyways?
<ocdtrekkie>
lukexj: If there's an app someone needs, and they port it, then they often share it.

Sandstorm's security can make packaging apps require a little more work than some other platforms (it's worth it though). I've ported self-contained apps without even knowing the language they're written in, or much Linux.
<ocdtrekkie>
But others require some more work.
<ocdtrekkie>
There's actually a bunch of packages and native Sandstorm apps in development by various parties that aren't market-ready yet.
