<apelete>
hello everyone
<viric>
mh kernels get bigger and bigger. openwrt on 16MB of RAM got stuck at 2.6.32 I think
<viric>
how big is the nanonote kernel now? dmesg | fgrep "kernel code"
<larsc>
7MB maybe
<apelete>
larsc: I noticed while playing with the serial output on the NN this week-end that the serial console was read only, there's no shell prompt at the end of kernel boot process (using qi kernel 3.9 here)
<larsc>
if you press the 'S' key while powering on the device write will also be enabled
<viric>
larsc: was it so big on, let's say, 2.6.36?
<larsc>
no
<larsc>
so compressed was < 2MB now it is > 2MB
<viric>
openwrt had about a 2MB diff between 2.6.32 and 3.3
<viric>
hm do you correlate much the file size with the kernel size in ram?
<viric>
(I mean, memory not available to the system)
<apelete>
larsc: secret boot command, that's nice :). will try it later (I'm at work right now), thanks.
<larsc>
apelete: rx is off by default because otherwise, if no serial is connected and the pin is floating you'll receivce bogus data
<viric>
larsc: the 'reserved' memory may have changed, too, right? that wouldn't be in the kernel file

Does anybody know what the max input voltage (charge & power circuit) the NN can take? I looked at the circuit diagrams and the only info was the IC limits in the IC specs. Are there limits with the circuit design/components? Thanks muchly.

I'm sure you're aware that floating cmos inputs are causing increased quiescent current and thus unwanted power consumption. And that a floating input it very prone to even induced surges that might kill the chip
<DocScrutinizer05>
well, maybe you are smart and configure the pin as output then
<DocScrutinizer05>
this has other immanent problems, like driving output vs output when sth gets connected, but for default case of oben connection it should be the better alternative to a floating input

DocScrutinizer05: you don't have to tell me
<DocScrutinizer05>
:-)
<DocScrutinizer05>
somebody again failed to ask us for proofreading the schematics before they went to mp?
<larsc>
kind of
<DocScrutinizer05>
larsc: does that pin have the usual pullup/pulldown resistors configuarbe via setup?
<DocScrutinizer05>
chip internal GPIO standard block
<DocScrutinizer05>
if there's such a thing, you might consider a nifty logic to detect if pin is floating
<larsc>
you can add a pullup if it is configured for gpio mode, but not if it is configured for uart mode
<DocScrutinizer05>
sure, during init you're free to configure it for GPIO temporarily?
<DocScrutinizer05>
configure for GPIO, set weak pullup, read in and check if 1, configure weak pulldown, read in and check for 0. repeat 10 times. if all results been in line with pullup/down then assume it's floating
<DocScrutinizer05>
keep it gonfigured as GPIO and set to output 0
<DocScrutinizer05>
otherwise assume there must be something driving the input and configure as UART RX
<larsc>
hm
<larsc>
might work
<DocScrutinizer05>
sure
<DocScrutinizer05>
;-)
<DocScrutinizer05>
my designs usually work ;-D
<DocScrutinizer05>
and this one took me almost 5 minutes, it damn better works ;-)
<whitequark>
:D
<whitequark>
neat trick
<DocScrutinizer05>
just give me proper credit for the idea when implementing it :-)
<whitequark>
isn't that the textbook way to detect floating inputs? ;)
<DocScrutinizer05>
if it is then I never owned that textbook
<DocScrutinizer05>
but I could figure the more evolved jtag testers have a similar function

idly wonders why the complementary outputs in TTL were also called totem pole
<DocScrutinizer05>
>> Der Name der Schaltung bezieht sich auf die Symbolanordnung für die Endstufentransistoren im Schaltbild. Diese werden normalerweise übereinander gezeichnet, vergleichbar einem Totempfahl der Indianer (engl.: totem pole).<<

the guy who invented that name must have been high on grass

btw projects.qi-hardware seams to be having uptime problems. (hint: this means I am finally getting around to uploading my dam goodies! ...at blooming last)

arossdotme: I don't have access to the schematics (qi-hw.com down?) but iirc there's no range allowed. It has to be a stabilized voltage
