<qi-bot> [commit] Ayla: The conf file does not need to be saved on exit. (master) http://qi-hw.com/p/gmenu2x/9768a74
<Ayla> guys
<Ayla> mind if I remove the help menu on gmenu2x?
<Ayla> it is useless, it shows controls for the GP2X port only
<wolfspraul> ps2chiper: good morning
<wolfspraul> Ayla: then remove sounds great!
<wolfspraul> wrong information is worse than no information
<wolfspraul> ps2chiper: I read the huge backlog, well, skimmed it
<Ayla> or maybe I can wrap that code into #define
<roh> wolfspraul: ;)
<wolfspraul> larsc: you work for ADI? congratulations - that sounds like an excellent company for you!
<wolfspraul> if you find out about any super interesting new ADI chips, let us know. We can build some cool products with them :-)
<wolfspraul> I'm trying to understand the business model and future of Blackfin and SHARC for a while, if you get behind those mysteries, please share. (of course without breaching any confidentiality, just to share qualifications on how/if/when to use them, where they are going)
<larsc> wolfspraul: i'll keep my eyes open
<larsc> and yes, i guess it a good place for me to work at. couldn't have said no.
<erikkugel> hi all, quick inquiry, wondering if anyone knows who's the original author of this page: http://en.qi-hardware.com/wiki/Building_OpenWRT_on_Debian_6
<erikkugel> it's the Wiki page for building OpenWRT on Debian 6
<erikkugel> I'm asking because I'm curious how can the instructions be updated for following releases (they currently refer to the February build).
<erikkugel> I'm trying to just change the release number when checking out with GIT, but attempting that for the August build failed (the build quit when building cryptography libraries, which were not part of the broken packages list). I'm trying now with May build, after also removing the now unnecessary ALSA-LIB patch, but I was curious if I'm missing something obvious.
<qi-bot> [commit] Ayla: Dingoo port: The help menu now displays help for dingoo's controls. (master) http://qi-hw.com/p/gmenu2x/03a26a8
<roh> re
<whitequark> Just tried to disassemble DSDT on a recent hp laptop
<whitequark> they've put a complete VT100 emulator and the setup utility inside.
<whitequark> together, it is roughly 27000 lines long.
<whitequark> I just had to share this insanity with someone.
<wolfspraul> what is DSDT?
<whitequark> the main ACPI table with bytecode
<whitequark> that is, it is a huge chunk of bytecode stored in BIOS and executed by OS kernel (or EFI, if there's no OS loaded yet)
<whitequark> originally, it was developed to power off the system gracefully or adjust the brightness of a laptop screen. Then, at some point, it turned to four-revision, 800-page-long specification with two appendixes.
<whitequark> I've discovered all of that while trying to determine why a software-induced brightness change on my laptop produced spurious keypresses
<rejon> wpwrak, wolfspraul what do you think about this stuff http://keithp.com/blog/ is doing with rockets
<rejon> ?
<rejon> we should get them onto qi with their hardwrae
<rejon> of course they are hobbyist, but we should find ways to collaborate
<wolfspraul> yes sure of course
<wolfspraul> they are doing a quality job on licensing I think, really everything is open and GPL licensed etc.
<wolfspraul> they are technically ambitious
<wolfspraul> that's all I think about it right now :-)
<wolfspraul> I have added the Altus Metrum RSS feed to the Qi planet already
<wolfspraul> so that will give me or other Qi planet followers the chance to follow and learn about their progress over time, and find ways to collaborate/reuse
<wolfspraul> that's as much as I can do right now
<ps2chiper> im back
<ps2chiper> i needed to sleep
<Jade119> hi
<wolfspraul> ps2chiper: what was the main question or point you wanted to make?
<wolfspraul> I read through this huge backlog but the more and faster I read the less I understood :-)
<wolfspraul> there must be something exciting there though...
<ps2chiper> i was just looking for someone to help me get ubuntu 10.04
<ps2chiper> then the guys started complaining about kernel lockin
<ps2chiper> and i pointed out that all the soc vendors today have that problem
<wolfspraul> ah I see :-)
<ps2chiper> did i miss anything?
<wolfspraul> no, I think I got it now. sorry I was confused by the many different arguments in that thread.
<wolfspraul> then it turns out the original question was about ubuntu 10.04 :-)
<ps2chiper> nobody could answer the question of a non eol soc that has open userspace for the gpu.
<wolfspraul> that's why we invest heavily in, and believe, and are in love with...
<ps2chiper> hey wolfspraul, i dont know if you remember me. but we spoke a few years back over skype
<wolfspraul> Milkymist :-)
<wolfspraul> sorry I do not clearly remember, no
<ps2chiper> xiangfu-liu told me all about milky mist
<wolfspraul> I would love to make more products with it
<wolfspraul> the first one is just out, Milkymist One
<wolfspraul> a video synthesizer, which we will add more functionality to now
<ps2chiper> well i had some ideas of my own
<ps2chiper> openwrt powered clock radio
<ps2chiper> and openwrt powered voip phone
<wolfspraul> let's talk about the chips first
<wolfspraul> hardware acceleration is tough
<ps2chiper> ralink
<ps2chiper> if you dont want to talk, i need to ride my bicycle
<wolfspraul> how is that related :-)
<wolfspraul> that's funny
<wolfspraul> ride your bicycle
<wolfspraul> that's always preferable to talk I'd say
<wolfspraul> :-)
<wolfspraul> let's talk some products soon, it's good to hear back
<wolfspraul> since you are in shenzhen and work for factories etc. we probably share a lot of the same experiences
<wolfspraul> I'm thinking about a lot of new things
<ps2chiper> that its getting late in the afternoon and i need to do some exercise, how is that funny?
<wolfspraul> from Milkymist On expansion boards, to speakers/headphones, audio controllers, laser projectors, improved NanoNote, and so on
<wolfspraul> all the way to the BuddhaMachine :-)
<ps2chiper> our current goal with amlogic is to get xbmc with dvb support going on it for a dreambox killer
<ps2chiper> you should also hear my open cola idea
<wolfspraul> any time, I'm reading the channel
<wolfspraul> in my experience, the 'anything' killer will not kill 'anything', btw
<ps2chiper> ok, well to make the opencola idea short. we take a soda fountain and place it in colleges and use that machine to advertise oss related work. show college students how linux can earn more money than windows.
<ps2chiper> you should also do a karaoke projector
<ps2chiper> people like to party
<wolfspraul> I'm thinking about speaker, laser projector
<wolfspraul> but it's just thinking
<ps2chiper> well from my point of view, you should build products normal people want to buy, and they can be foss and open source hardware too
<ps2chiper> i should ride my bicycle now. ill be back in an hour
<wolfspraul> ride safely
<ps2chiper> im back
<ps2chiper> i got rained on
<valhalla> ps2chiper: is the opencola idea related to the opencola homebrewed cola recipe?
<ps2chiper> yes, how they used open source cola to promote open source software
<LunaVorax> Hello everyone !
<ps2chiper> hi
<Jay7> open source beer should give more promoution :)
<Jay7> *promotion
<wpwrak> "X killer" will usually be killed by another "X killer", for the brilliant idea of doing something that' s just like a successful product is amazingly contagious ;-)
<wpwrak> Jay7: (open source beer) not a good ideas. if you do this, then everybody needs to change their "like free speech, not like free beer" analogy
<ps2chiper> ok
<ps2chiper> free beer is expensive
<lekernel> whitequark, what's the point of the VT100 emulator?
<lekernel> whitequark, and since the setup utility is in the DSDT, I guess you can run it from linux?
<ps2chiper> yo Ayla
<ps2chiper> whats new
<Ayla> hi
<ps2chiper> whats up
<Ayla> nothing new
<ps2chiper> did you get a chance to review the amlogic source code
<Ayla> it does not download at all
<Ayla> it can't find a single peer
<ps2chiper> you can also dowload it from openlinux.amlogic.com
<Ayla> ah ok
<ps2chiper> will you have time to look at it today?
<Ayla> not today
<Ayla> we want to release opendingux today
<Ayla> what do you want me to review anyway?
<ps2chiper> to see if it can work with ubuntu 10.04
<Ayla> the board?
<ps2chiper> i can send a board after you review the source code
<lekernel> why put more effort into making software work on yet another proprietary soc? help with the linux port on milkymist instead ...
<ps2chiper> because all soc's with a gpu have this issue.
<Ayla> so you're asking me to port ubuntu? ...
<lekernel> what gpu functions do you need?
<ps2chiper> one of my goals is to find a person to port ubuntu to the amlogic soc if possible.
<Ayla> eh, you didn't tell me that last time
<ps2chiper> you left before i could
<Ayla> ok
<ps2chiper> remember i told you i wanted to do profit sharing projects
<lekernel> that's a stupid goal, if you want to use some proprietary soc just take one that has a wide existing software support, like ti omap
<ps2chiper> an ubuntu thin client is one of my ideas
<lekernel> so you're not wasting time supporting some company's proprietary design
<Ayla> lekernel: that his company's
<Ayla> that's his company*
<ps2chiper> i support foss, but im noting going out of my way to make a statement. i rather build something that would make people happy.
<lekernel> this channel is about copyleft hardware, not about recruiting people to work on proprietary hardware
<ps2chiper> i never said proprietary. but if you are buying a soc, its proprietary too. they wont give you the information to make your own soc.
<ps2chiper> the only one that does that is opensparc
<lekernel> and leon3, and milkymist, and others
<ps2chiper> so what ip core do those products use?
<lekernel> they are custom made
<ps2chiper> is the ip licensed under an free software license?
<lekernel> for the RTL part that is - physical IP (e.g. standard cells, FPGA tools, ...) is still proprietary so far
<lekernel> yes
<ps2chiper> so if you want to go that far. you shouldnt use there products because you are not freely able to manufacture their soc's your self
<lekernel> that's the next step - and the RTL source is portable, so if we want to make that step, we can
<ps2chiper> RTL real time linux, Im assuming?
<lekernel> no, register transfer level
<lekernel> verilog/vhdl sources
<lekernel> and by the way milkymist has graphics acceleration ip, also freely licensed
<ps2chiper> so its opengl es 1.1 ?
<lekernel> it's not complete, but can be completed without fundamental problems
<lekernel> just the parts of it that I needed to run milkdrop :-)
<ps2chiper> do you mean open source divers to replace the proprietary drivers?
<lekernel> no, I mean free software licensed Verilog sources that describe the "GPU"
<ps2chiper> thanks for that, now who makes a cortex a9 soc with a open userspace for the gpu?
<lekernel> i'd rather make a LM32 soc with a free GPU *HDL description, and for the software drivers X is something I won't touch, but I don't see issues for making the rest open source
<ps2chiper> making ic's is above me. so i will leave it a lone
<ps2chiper> back you Ayla
<ps2chiper> back to you Ayla
<lekernel> this is a hardware channel, so it should be about making IC's
<ps2chiper> your welcome to talk about it.
<mth> does anyone know how I can remove a remote branch?
<mth> preferably without removing it locally
<mth> in git
<icestorm_> i think it was git push with ':branchname', but you have to be very sure about that
<mth> yes, that works, thanks
