<cess11>
Maybe I confused gis.l with something like a svg.l.
<Regenaxer>
yeah, that's another one. All kind of similar
<beneroth>
progress in web development technology is measured in the number of different ways to do the same thing sub-optimally
<Regenaxer>
haha, indeed
<beneroth>
in this perspective we came a lot further, substantially we are still bound to some half-assed concepts developed by someone 20 years ago over a single weekend
<anjaa>
cess11: pizza for lunch/supper or should i cook?
<Regenaxer>
cook please!
<anjaa>
we're moving tomorrow so most of our stuff are in boxes
<Regenaxer>
hmm
<beneroth>
then pizza :D
<beneroth>
but not for both lunch and supper :D
<anjaa>
you're right, it will be breakfast as well
<beneroth>
oh noez
<anjaa>
half as lunch, half as supper?
<beneroth>
you're last chance to get something from this restaurant near your old place which you never visited but always looked interesting
<beneroth>
or yeah, selfmade pizza :)
<beneroth>
american or italian pizza?
<anjaa>
we live in a pretty small place, there are two pizzerias and one sushi/thai place
<anjaa>
uh, swedish bastardisation of italian pizza
<anjaa>
most of our pizzerias are run by people from the middle east
<anjaa>
our = sweden's

i tried eating a pizza from a place in munich once, it was horrible
<anjaa>
thick crust and almost no toppings
<beneroth>
there are many italians in switzerland, they (were) used to do the risky hole digging in our mountains
<anjaa>
they could've at least covered it with cheese :(
<beneroth>
sounds horrible
<anjaa>
it was
<anjaa>
i lived in switzerland for a short while but never had dinner from a restaurant there
<cess11>
anjaa: probably american pan pizza
<beneroth>
I find best pizza is so thin that you believe you could eat forever, with thin but well-mixed topping
<miskatonic>
The Ticino should be separated from Switzerland and rendered unto Italy.
<beneroth>
I think they would really not like that
<cess11>
anjaa: will pick something up
<anjaa>
cess11: <3
<beneroth>
I mean the ticinese, not the italians
<beneroth>
cess11, for us too?

miskatonic, the Ticino residents are one of the the strongest vocal group to restrict immigration and border-crossing, because they got a lot of italian cross-border commuter
<beneroth>
and there are many italians living all over switzerland. when Germany and Austria imported Turks when they hadn't enough workforce, switzerland imported italians
<beneroth>
anjaa, well the problem is it only runs on pilOS. we should continue building pilOS :D
<anjaa>
beneroth: good idea!
<miskatonic>
there need to be more universities in Ticino, especially one which teaches picolisp
<beneroth>
why do you see the lack of picolisp teaching in Ticino as a bigger issue than the general lack of picolisp teachings?
<beneroth>
also.. I guess you would find it hard to convince enough people of your opinion to make it happen :)
<beneroth>
the companies all ask for Java and C#, no? :D
<miskatonic>
there need to be more schools which teach picolisp, wherever
<beneroth>
(that will be answer by those people you would need to convince)
<beneroth>
miskatonic, for what purpose?
<beneroth>
lower barriers for entry into a programming language is often not bringing that language into better (quality-wise) use
<beneroth>
see PHP
<anjaa>
in helsinki, they're unveiling a sculpture in honour of the finnish winter war, which broke out on this day in 1939
<beneroth>
you honor the war?
<miskatonic>
they could have waited for two more years
<anjaa>
goo.gl/czSBVycontent_copyCopy short URL
<anjaa>
oops
<anjaa>
no, i honour those who died during the war
<anjaa>
and those who survived
<anjaa>
well in honour of the soldiers
<anjaa>
goo.gl/czSBVyv <-- correct url
<anjaa>
miskatonic: it was supposed to be finished for the 75 year anniversary but for some reason they didn't, and instead they're unveiling it for finland's 100-year-birthday
<beneroth>
miskatonic, currently, picolispers are filtered for self-initiative, deep interest (vs. superficial interest) and determination (do it! mindset) - this are (I believe) good attributes for a developer, so picolisp developers are well likely a sub-group of good developers. if picolisp gets easier accessible, people will not be automatically better developers, they will just be horrible programmers now armed with picolisp instead of limited by restrictions of
<beneroth>
java/c#/php/etc. I believe many limits in those languages (well not in PHP, PHP is just a mess) are on purpose, to guarantee a lower bound to how bad the results can be (obviously also creating an upper-bound)
<beneroth>
sure we should spread picolisp
<anjaa>
larger user base also means more idiots
<beneroth>
but I'm not sure if it would be good to really attempt to make it into a mainstream language. it probably would not be able to conserve its good qualities then.
<beneroth>
anjaa, you are better than me in using shorter words :D
<miskatonic>
i can only play audio in ogg/vorbis form

because they name a cat SYN/ACK

What does it mean in Firefox if it says it shows the offline version of this page? How do I get it back to connect to the real page? This pops up in new FF Quantum from time to time, but I did not change any settings? Drives me nuts
<Regenaxer>
Is it just a bug in Quantum beta?
<beneroth>
I only know this from vivaldi/chrome, there it is when I don't have an internet connection
<beneroth>
I always wondered if this is a feature of the browser or the specific website (e.g. local storage use)
<Regenaxer>
No, it is also for a local server
<beneroth>
haven't noticed in the new firefox, but I only use it on one computer, all others stay on old firefox because they ruined the tab-group plugin (which was once a native feature) and I hate them for it
<Regenaxer>
Seems a special mode
<beneroth>
weird
<Regenaxer>
indeed
<Regenaxer>
I don't find any settings for that
<beneroth>
so they haven't really stopped on their run into suckness.
<Regenaxer>
Yeah
<beneroth>
it's sad
<Regenaxer>
And also, I do *not* feel it got faster
<Regenaxer>
I've already deactivated Chrome on this tablet :(
<Regenaxer>
ah! So it is a bug it seems
<beneroth>
well they sacrificed so much for that performance gain... the whole plugin API, and plugins was the main leverage of FF for the last 10-15 years
<Regenaxer>
It seems to happen if I change the window size
<beneroth>
For 49, your best bet is to go into about:config, look for browser.tabs.useCache and set it to false. This will disable this feature entirely.
<beneroth>
"However, current Firefox for Android Beta (which is 50 now) has a non-buggy implementation of this feature, "
<beneroth>
hm.. yeah sure
<beneroth>
ah quantum should be firefox 57
<beneroth>
so does not apply
<Regenaxer>
good, set useCache to false. Let's see :)
<Regenaxer>
Thanks beneroth!
<beneroth>
your welcome :)

is programming now taught at art schools?
<beneroth>
well that was before I was a programmer
<beneroth>
though the school of arts in zurich teaches interaction design (= UX) and game design, so yeah they teach python there afaik
<miskatonic>
ahhhhhh I already thought of font design, which has got artistic aspects

wanted to become comic artist then (learning something real) graphic artist. for the graphic artist apprenticeship a one year full-time art & design class is mandatory, which I took (after passing some quite filtering tests).
<beneroth>
learned C++ in my free time the second half of that year. didn't found a job / apprenticeship as graphic artist afterwards (mostly because there weren't any around), so I switched to IT.
<miskatonic>
comic artist, as in designing mangas and so on?
<beneroth>
yeah.. drawing comics... could be manga or american style.. the styles I tried out were mostly influenced by french/belgian comics and manga
<miskatonic>
french/belgian ... maybe those of Asterix and Obelix?
<beneroth>
yeah. and spirou & fantasio, though I don't know their original names nor what they're named in english etc :)

Maybe Regenaxer read those old comics before he started inventing Pil. The designer was Peyot or something similar.
<beneroth>
my local little library had these when I grew up
<miskatonic>
and I thought they were already forgotten in the eighties ... except in the movies. Even their names changed.
