<hellofunk> why does ocaml compile faster than mlton? i've been reading that "mlton has one of the best optimizing compilers of any language" and yet surprisingly the ocaml compiler, which passes on many possible optimizations, is still faster. this is impressive to me.
darkf has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
orbifx has joined #ocaml
<fds> How are you comparing them?
<adrien_> hellofunk: mlton does optimizations on the whole program so there's much more work to do
<adrien_> especially since some optimizations take more than linear time
<hellofunk> adrien_: yes but ocaml is still faster, without these optimizations that mlton does
<adrien_> (actually, probably pretty much all optimizations take more than linear time)
<hellofunk> fds: i'm referring to a few web pages, including one on mlton.org that show ocaml is faster. even the mlton folks admit it
<adrien_> because these optimizations don't make things that much faster overall
<adrien_> might be a few percents or dozens of percents
adrien_ is now known as adrien
<adrien> hmmm, are you saying the compiler is faster or the compiler output is faster?
<hellofunk> adrien i'm talking about the execution speed of the compile program, not compile time
<adrien> ah :)
<hellofunk> *compiled program
noddy has joined #ocaml
<hellofunk> here's another: http://mlton.org/OCaml
<adrien> more work on the compiler, more recent work on the compiler, better balance
<hellofunk> <he
<hellofunk> i do like the sml syntax and purity a lot more
<adrien> and maybe a faster runtime representation
<hellofunk> plus, mlton uses native number everywhere, nothing is boxed. yet it is still slower than ocaml
<hellofunk> intresting
<flux> perhaps GC is faster as well?

<ggole> I'd be careful with that kind of comparison. SML and OCaml aren't the same language and there are differences (like overflow exceptions) that can affect performance
<Armael> on http://mlton.org/OCaml when they say "ocaml compiles faster" I guess they are talking about compile time
<flux> I imagine mlton wins when there's a lot of abstraction involved
<flux> where the whole-program-optimization really gives value
<ggole> WPO and monomorphize-everywhere might actually lose if it results in too large a volume of code
<flux> does it do mononomorphize-everywhere?
<ggole> Yeah
<flux> combinatoric explosion?
<ggole> They claim it's reasonable in practice
<ggole> (Which it probably is.)
contempt has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<ggole> "In both SML and OCaml, the largest slice of runtime of my test program went to string-to-floating-point conversions; OCaml performs these by calling out to the C library directly"

<Sefarye> Sorry, got disconnected
<Armael> mmh, more commonly, you'd have the list you filter on as a parameter of filter
<Armael> and then it would be passed to aux
<pierpa> should be equivalent to this: https://bpaste.net/show/77474446853e
<pierpa> (not tested, may be wrong)
<Armael> here you basically have the idiomatic code, plus the fact that "let f x = g x" is the same as "let f = g"
