<DocScrutinizer05>
which leads me to a question: should I remove the protectors usually applied in a very good way to all of those refurbs, to check the screen is actually pristine? Or should I keep the protector?
<DocScrutinizer05>
the protectors are quite nice
<wpwrak>
i'd think that you'd be able to see most problems through the protector, no ?
<DocScrutinizer05>
that's the question. I think a protector would cover and make invisible any small scratches
<DocScrutinizer05>
actually I suspected they add those protectors exactly for that purpose
<DocScrutinizer05>
I peeled off 2 of them, one months ago and now a second one on this 24-batch sample, and both screens were mint condition
<wpwrak>
hmm, i'd think they add these films to avoid scratches during handling at the factory. i guess they could remove them before boxing, but why take chances ?
<wpwrak>
plus, for many a customer there will be a pleasant surprise if they discover after a year or so that this ugly "touch screen film" actually comes off, and reveals a still pristine screen ;-)
<DocScrutinizer05>
that's not a simple workbench protection film, this is a decent screen protector, made of a highly transparent durable film to stay, plus a protective film on top which is the one you talk about
<DocScrutinizer05>
the question however is not about the protective film but about the actual screen protector
<DocScrutinizer05>
I can remove it to inspect the actual device digitizer surface, but then I can't re-apply it as good as they did in china. Those screen protectors are not meant to get removed and then re-applied
<wpwrak>
seems that you've found the answer to your question :) besides, if there are defects that a permanent protector hides so that you can't find them, then they may as well not exist
<DocScrutinizer05>
did I?
<wpwrak>
cf. tree falling in the forest without anyone hearing it
<DocScrutinizer05>
see, that's the question. Do people prefer a know-good device without protector, or a supposedly-good device with good protector?
<wpwrak>
if the protector is designed to stay on, and there's no design flaw in that concept, i wouldn't remove it.
<DocScrutinizer05>
I tend to agree
<DocScrutinizer05>
but that's just me
<DocScrutinizer05>
no design flaws detected (yet?)
<DocScrutinizer05>
it actually even has a cutout to not cover the front camera and proxy
<DocScrutinizer05>
err does it?
<DocScrutinizer05>
it has a coutout for indicator LED which is a tad of nonsensical
<wpwrak>
i guess the guy who got the job of designing the protector had higher ambitions than just delivering a rectangle with rounded edges :)
<DocScrutinizer05>
touchscreen sensitifity impacts yet to get evaluated
<DocScrutinizer05>
sensitivity*
<DocScrutinizer05>
but that's a non-issue as users are free to remove protector according to a warning "does slightly diminish touch sensitivity!"
<DocScrutinizer05>
the adhesion is not by glue but apparently by electrostatic charge "imprinted" into the protector on contact side, so no chemical long term impact either

thus also the higher price

tries to get rid of that nasty chemical smell in his flat, by disposing the DHL bags and sticky tape
<DocScrutinizer05>
actually that sticky tape is as nasty strong as I've never seen before
<DocScrutinizer05>
you break what it sticks to, rather than being able to peel off the sticky tape
<edwin>
does the touch-screen work better with protector on or not?
<edwin>
and the stylus? I usually apply protector to all my devices, although for mine it tends to make them a little bit less sensitive, don't know if its same situation with resistive screens?
<pigeons>
i think the loss of sensitivity is less
<edwin>
getting my device with a protector already applied would be a nice surprise :)

<DocScrutinizer05>
the sensitivity is a tad less with protector
<DocScrutinizer05>
barely noticeable
<DocScrutinizer05>
pretty obvious as the protector adds another layer of somewhat rigid material on top of digitizer's outer (surface) foil, thus stiffening the whole thing a bit so it is "harder" to bend it so it touches the other digitizer plane
<DocScrutinizer05>
on resistive touchscreen a touch is a merely mechanical action to bend down the outer plane to touch the inner plane (they are separated by oil separator on N900's r-ts)
<edwin>
ok, well with the keyboard I'll use the touchscreen less anyway
Kabouik has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
<edwin>
so everything considered this batch you got looks good so far?
<DocScrutinizer05>
thanks to the oil separator as opposed to the usually found spacer bumps and air separation in other inferior resistive digitizers, the N900's digitizer is exceptionally sensitive anyway
<edwin>
cool

sourcing QA of all 24 devices still pending
<DocScrutinizer05>
this will easily take a 15 min per unit

well as long as they're not bricks and lemons.. take your time

every few months I get antsy and check on it, and having a device in my hands still seems a ways off

so then I start shopping around for cellular modules and SoC boards
<ndnihil>
then I get annoyed at how that wouldn't be any faster and close out a couple/few dozen browser tabs

<DocScrutinizer05>
yes, we're going to use a compatibe (identical) cam module on Neo900
<amatus>
neat
<DocScrutinizer05>
some claim the type we use is higher picture quality than the original N900 one. I doubt that, but anyway, it's for sure not inferior
<DocScrutinizer05>
we basically just switched to that N97(?) cam module since it has a neat flat cable with 'standard' B2B connector, while the SMIA95 socket for cam module in N900 is unobtainium
<DocScrutinizer05>
and in my book that flat cable attached to the module is the only difference
