<rjeffries>
neo900 blog needs updates. From the blog, project status is not clear.
<DocScrutinizer05>
rjeffries: do you mean the microblog or our news?
<DocScrutinizer05>
I agree that all of our website needs urgent update, we have a new guy for that: hellekin
<rjeffries>
the main blog, neo900.org yes, I saw a pointer to a January post on the micriblog
<DocScrutinizer05>
so I hope we can improve on that now
<rjeffries>
neo900.org shoud (I think) be the central focus when communication to teh world.
<rjeffries>
great!
<rjeffries>
after you do, then I will post on my Twitter account and maybe Google+.
<DocScrutinizer05>
yes, it's pretty unfortunate that traditionally the communication is mostly via IRC and on talk.maemo.org
<DocScrutinizer05>
and t.m.o became a tad 'hostile' lately, not allowing tor access
<rjeffries>
oh wow
<DocScrutinizer05>
well, it seems freenode is in the same boat
<rjeffries>
so very briefly, how is Neo 900 software and hardware shaping up?
<DocScrutinizer05>
for a project like Neo900, it's a nogo to act hostile against tor users
<rjeffries>
of course
<DocScrutinizer05>
software seen some great achievements by Pali and freemangordon lately
<DocScrutinizer05>
hardware is in a limbo since our partner GDC has no timeslot for us, so we need to look for alternatives which is a daunting task
<rjeffries>
I realize this is a sensitive and deeply complex issue, but do you have any hope to one day have a radio that supports North American LTE bands? TMobile (including band 12) is of interest, but also AT&T
ravelo has joined #neo900
<rjeffries>
sorry to hear about GDC
<DocScrutinizer05>
I need to come up with a plan how to manage this new situation, maybe GDC can assure us sufficient timeslots after June, so it would make sense to do an interim solution for the prototype now (I do layout myself maybe). Or GDC can't assure such timeslots then we need to find a new partner right away
<DocScrutinizer05>
(American LTE) we use the Gemalto P*S8 and I'm pretty sure Gemalto has high interest in supporting Northern America
<wpwrak>
DocScrutinizer05: i wouldn't plan on GDC for design work. also, you can't work in a way that's compatible with GDC anyway since you don't have nik's proprietary tools.
<DocScrutinizer05>
yes, I'm aware of all that
<DocScrutinizer05>
it's a tough task to make a good decision here
<DocScrutinizer05>
the project was very focused on GDC as partner
<nf`>
GDC?
<DocScrutinizer05>
Golden Delicious Computers
<rjeffries>
dumb question: what is special about GDC?
<DocScrutinizer05>
Nikolaus built the Pandora and the GTA04, so he knows all the process steps
<DocScrutinizer05>
I don't, or do only from hearsay
<DocScrutinizer05>
he has contacts to Gemalto, to Global Components for production, to the PCB house which I don't even know the name of
<DocScrutinizer05>
and he did PCB layout for a similar device
<rjeffries>
So a naive question: why does GDC not have time/resources to help move Neo900 project forward?
<rjeffries>
whatever happened to teh follow-on Pandora? did it happen?
<wpwrak>
he might be able to help for the manufacturing steps. there's a reasonably clean interface between design and that. so i wouldn't worry about that part too much. also, GC can probably recommend PCB fabs (or directly take care of that)
<DocScrutinizer05>
well, the rationale was like "Dragonbox Pyra took 5 times longer than expected, so private issues got postponed and need urgent attention now"
<DocScrutinizer05>
(I made up the "5 times")
<rjeffries>
ahh it is complicated. Have you guys met face to face recently? seems like it could be ironed out...
<DocScrutinizer05>
wow
<rjeffries>
and your PayPal funding hassle has not helped one assumes
<wpwrak>
rjeffries: certainly also messed up things with GDC - it's not nice if a project you expect to do major work for suddenly gets frozen for months
<DocScrutinizer05>
yes, the fallout however lingers on, I have health issues
ravelo has quit [Ping timeout: 244 seconds]
<rjeffries>
wpwrak that would indeed be a HUGE hit financially to teh vendor
<DocScrutinizer05>
unrelated question: could somebody recommend an IRC client for an old iPad?
<rjeffries>
well Neo900 remains a shining light in terms of a truely open mobile handset. it should find a niche market
<DocScrutinizer05>
yes, we urgently need better marketing
<rjeffries>
and can anybody point me to a decent Android IRC cleinet? LOL
<DocScrutinizer05>
we are short of preorders

Doc, you don't need advice from the cheap seats (me ;) but my OPINION is that as close to complete ttansparency as possible is the best strategy. Even if news is so-so, tell your community exactly wher ethengs stand. you need engagement.
<DocScrutinizer05>
yep
<DocScrutinizer05>
we even promised that
<DocScrutinizer05>
it's a tad hard to communicate not-so-nice news
<DocScrutinizer05>
well, I hope for Hellekin
<rjeffries>
you do not need anything fancy, especially with the hard core people who give a damn about an open mobile pone/ tell it like it is, no spin.
<rjeffries>
if there is not a known path to sucess, then say you are reviewing strategy and will make a decision by a fir date.
<bencoh>
(I still strongly believe the best "backup strategy" would be (would have been?) to move to omap5 (more recent design) but I know this is a nogo (for stage1 at least))
<DocScrutinizer05>
for now our main issues are: my health problems, GDC lack of timeslots for us, too few preorders (we need twice the number we have now)
timclassic has joined #neo900
<rjeffries>
bencoh one challenge (from teh sidelines) is the delays mean that the initail design gets more and more "long in the tooth" It does not have to be cutting edge, but at some point even the most dedicated supporters will move on (I suspect)

hmm, that's not really an issue yet it seems to me. The specs are reasonably "up to date" for a smartphone still. 1GB RAM and a 1GHz OMAP3 is not that bad yet, should suffice for all but the most demanding VR applications
<DocScrutinizer05>
you can't use the Neo900 for a VR-goggles anyway since the screen is not large enough compared to eye-distance
