<buZz>
welcome to 3 years ago?
<buZz>
'preorder now!'
<libv>
buZz: it's almost always the same story...
<buZz>
why do they never learn
<libv>
some design student has the same ohsobright idea, gathers some friends, does a kickstarter
<libv>
people fall for it
<libv>
then the trouble starts
<buZz>
this is by ppl that worked at NextThingComputer
<libv>
the one thing different about nextthingco is that they had the worst timing
<libv>
namely, the middle of the allwinner gpl shitstorm
<buZz>
right, plus during the launch of pi-zero
<libv>
and they of course had not done their homework
<buZz>
a 9usd cpu+storage+wifi could have totally be popular
<libv>
and about a week into their kickstarter they had gotten wise to all the backers who asked about allwinners gpl violations
<buZz>
they had no allwinner experience prior? O_o
<libv>
buZz: which was only possible due to some ties with allwinner and ultra cheap parts from allwinner, hoping to make it up by selling overpriced peripherals
<buZz>
40usd for the pocketchip was barely overpriced
<libv>
so nextthingco went with free-electrons for everything, and then they of course ran out of money
<libv>
buZz: compared to the actual board?
<buZz>
everything? i thought free-electrons only did that flash driver?
<buZz>
libv: it included the actual board
<buZz>
so 31 usd for battery + case + screen + keyboard, seems cheap imho
<libv>
they were completely thrown by the gpl violation thing
<buZz>
ok
<libv>
and they had the discomfort of being a .us company
<libv>
.cn companies never cared
<buZz>
so the free-electron deal just sucked up any and all profitmargin?
<libv>
i would see that as the other way around
<buZz>
they could have done the 'we provide no software' route
<libv>
they completely f-ed up, and then spent all their money on actual gpled code
<buZz>
hmhm
<libv>
making up for allwinners shortcomings with margins they never had
<KotCzarny>
isnt gpl mostly ignored by cours?
<KotCzarny>
*courts
<buZz>
afaik there hasnt been any gpl court test?
<libv>
but .us company doing a kickstarter right at the height of the gpl violation shitstorm is what triggered money influx
<libv>
for actual code

foxconn and their frienemies (lemaker, etc), and the company behind orangepi, and the countless that have long since been forgotten, they were all .cn based and they really never cared
apritzel has joined #linux-sunxi
<libv>
tom cubie cared, enough to get community members boards and to spend his own time feeding us code, docs, and blobs
<libv>
and a year or so later, olimex added oshw to that

source parts is half a decade too late
<libv>
we've all been through it too many times
<libv>
but it seems the kickstarter idiots... err... believer stupidity is still at an all time high
<libv>
now backed, a graphene based jacket...

<bill-auger>
there have been several GPL court cases; and AFAIK they have all upheld the GPL
<jernej>
IIRC you have FW for 24 MHz and another for 27 MHz crystal (not 100% about frequencies)
<tuxd3v>
I am using a 26Mhz crystal
<smaeul>
wow, that Pocket P.C. board is not going to have great battery life. LED backlight is powered directly from PS, and it has no 1.8V peripherals (eMMC, wifi)
<jernej>
here you have two BCM43430A1 FWs, each for one frequency
<jernej>
test both, one should work
<jernej>
ah, that with .vim extension is for 26 MHz
<jernej>
other one is for 37.4 MHz
<smaeul>
buZz: yeah, there's PWM. it's a boost converter, so the high side is always connected. but the low side looks to be isolated from ground, so maybe it's ok
<tuxd3v>
jernej,many thanks I will test the 26 Mhz one :)
<jernej>
tuxd3v: I can't say this is exactly the issue that you have, but it's most likely the reason

jernej, the BCM43430A1.hcd states 'BCM43438A1 37.4MHz Raspberry Pi 3-0141' almost at the beguining.. so it should be the other right? :)
