I mean, it's a big.LITTLE a15/a7, on the equivalent from Samsung, exynos5422, there is 4 thermal sensors, one per big core, and 1 more on the gpu
<wwilly_>
is that the same with the a80?

buZz: network dead, like you can't even ping the machine?
<diego71_>
or just you can't ssh into it?
<buZz>
ssh dies first
<buZz>
ping dies later
<buZz>
i dont have uart0 exposed , sadly
<buZz>
suspicious, right?
<diego71_>
buZz: probably normal, expecially if you have create swap on a slow device (like ssd)
<buZz>
i dont have any faster device to make it on
<diego71_>
s/ssd/sd/
<buZz>
i tried SD , USBflash , USB spinning disk
<buZz>
they all show exact same failures
nuuuciano has joined #linux-sunxi
<diego71_>
how big is the swap and how big is the ram?
<buZz>
1GB ram , i tried 128MB , 1GB and 8GB swap
<buZz>
its a 38MB .cpp file with ~500000 lines inside
<buZz>
which kills it
<diego71_>
And it is using much more than 1Gb?
<buZz>
i dont know , lol
<buZz>
it dies after ~50MB of swap gets used
<buZz>
cant even while true; do free >> freelog; done
<buZz>
because that will die aswell

buzz: you should try swap in zram
<buZz>
hehe
<KotCzarny>
no, seriously, it might help
<buZz>
i dont think that'll improve much
<KotCzarny>
disable sd swap
<buZz>
but yeah, i can try it later
<KotCzarny>
then add 1/4 of mem as zram and create swap there
<buZz>
it would just be a lot better if the dev of cool-retro-term didnt think 40MB .cpp files are 'ok'

wwilly_: chapter 3.21 from the usermanual
<beeble>
Sensor0 located beside the big CPU, Sensor1 located beside the DRAM, Sensor2 located beside the GPU and Sensor3 located beside the small CPU.
<beeble>
wwilly_: a80 is kind of a odd thing and will not see a lot of support outside of wens contributions. so depending on your requirements you may want to select another soc
<wwilly_>
currently just validate my phd thesis with another board than the samsung exynos5422
<wwilly_>
after that, don't know if I will use it anymore, depend on the job :)
phipli has joined #linux-sunxi
<beeble>
ah i see. so a15/7 is a requirement i assume.
<miasma>
on x86 dvfs isn't that critical. you can always buy a larger heatsink
<miasma>
i have something like 1,2 kg
<buZz>
ah wow, on normal i2c bus?
<beeble>
yes
<buZz>
why not on r-i2c
<buZz>
weird, vdd_cpu_b is specced lower than vdd_cpu_l
<buZz>
is big arm's small?
<beeble>
there is no differences in the i2c controllers on the rk3399
mavkhimenia has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<wwilly_>
miasma, nor on arm, depending on the physical scale of your device. I expect that nobody wants a 1,2Kg large heatsink on their smartphone
mavkhimenia has joined #linux-sunxi
<buZz>
wwilly_: many PDAs have half their weight in heatsinks already
<buZz>
it will increase over time, i assume
<buZz>
ehr, i mean 'smartphones'
<wwilly_>
ok
<wwilly_>
just want to finish my phd... :)
<miasma>
wwilly_: hm? on my phone i got some serious issues with heat throttling and battery life when using the perf governor. i'm pretty sure dvfs and all the perf optimization stuff is critical for the device to function properly. on x86 i can run the max performance settings 24/7/365 since i have 1,2 kg heatsink and two 120mm fans (+140mm case fan)
<buZz>
thermal throttling should just work, on arm aswell
<miasma>
also the system is still usable when the cpu temp rises up to 95°C but a 95°C phone is too hot to handle
<buZz>
but i agree most 'phone' devices seem designed by idiots :P
<KotCzarny>
known as engineers prodded by marketing boss
<buZz>
hehe
<miasma>
the antenna tech, at least, has gotten a lot worse
<buZz>
KotCzarny: delegated idiocy is even worse :D
<buZz>
miasma: or how about 'you dont need real GPS!'
<miasma>
some say the latest phones with metal back cover have 75% worse antenna than old nokia phones
<wwilly_>
miasma, yes ok, but there you don't compare fairly, is not ARM proco device the issue, its the packaging around that won't let you have HUGER cooling device
<KotCzarny>
buzz: btw. did you see asus 'phone' with detachable FAN ?
<buZz>
KotCzarny: lol yeah :D the tennisracket
<KotCzarny>
;)
<buZz>
size of a EEE netbook
<miasma>
wwilly_: sure, but that's the typical use case for me, at least
<buZz>
KotCzarny: i laugh at kids with such phones, tell them that reading glasses are cheaper than a bigger phone
<buZz>
KotCzarny: nice to see competition for the Switch though
<buZz>
i think thats their target
<miasma>
wwilly_: i also have an win10 atom tablet, but it consumes more power when screen @ 25% rightness that the charger can't charge it fast enough
<buZz>
:)
<miasma>
so, for me, x86 is not really usable in mobile
<KotCzarny>
:)
<buZz>
my 'webpotato' charges faster than i can deplete (in idle)
<buZz>
with screen on 100% brightness cause i havent setup PWM yet
<miasma>
probably just crappy design. the tablet never charger @ > 850 mA
<miasma>
*charges
<buZz>
miasma: uhuh, probably got what you paid for :)
<miasma>
yep!
<buZz>
micros should have never made win10 license free for devices with <9" screens :P
<buZz>
or whats the limit
<buZz>
whatever is causing the flood of ~50 euro atom tablets :P

hey; i'm struggling to get a custom built u-boot to boot a custom built zImage on an banana pi m2+
<night199uk>
u-boot works and initializes the display; but two problems: the usb keyboard doesn't work (is this expected?), and 2nd as soon as I try to boot my custom zImage the screen goes black with no signal
<night199uk>
the kernel is a fresh build from linux head
<night199uk>
built using clean sunxi_defconfig; the u-boot is built clean from HEAD with Sinovoip_BPI_M2_Plus_defconfig
<night199uk>
i've tried enabling (and disabling) the HDMI DesignWare support in the Linux kernel, disabling DRM completely and just using SimpleFB (with console=tty1 in boot.scr); everything leads to the same
<night199uk>
what can i try next?
