<R0b0t1> Hello I've recently cloned the kernel source and attempted to generate a kernel with sunxi_defconfig however it does not boot. What should I do?
<R0b0t1> The distribution on / is Ubuntu at the moment, so I also tried the Xenial kernel.
<R0b0t1> It does not boot if compiled with sunxi_defconfig
<R0b0t1> I am using the arm-linux-gnueabihf toolchain
<R0b0t1> Also: how do I set the serial speed for the boot device?

<R0b0t1> I have dtbs that were shipped, not sure if I can get the dts
reinforce has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
<R0b0t1> Fren I am not vry smrt
<miasma> R0b0t1: the kernel compilation genrates the dtbs for you
<miasma> it probably won't boot if you use incompatible dtb
<R0b0t1> Then why does /boot of the SD image the vendor provides have the dtbs in it?
<miasma> they're probably compatible with their official kernel?
<R0b0t1> So why would they be incompatible with the same version kernel compiled on a different host
<R0b0t1> .dtb is a binary format parsed by the kernel, no? It's not like it depends on symbols in the produced file?
Mr__Anderson has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<miasma> first try the dtb you got by compiling, if it works for you
<miasma> what kernel compression algo you had enabled?
<R0b0t1> xz I think
<miasma> there used to be some bug with lz4
<miasma> on arm, something to do with unaligned accesses
<R0b0t1> There's no dtbs in the kernel tree I compiled that look like they'd work, though there are a few with matching arch (sun8i)
<R0b0t1> I tried to compile the provided vendor files but I don't understand the build system
<R0b0t1> It seems like it pulls some random code and tries to run it so I've no interest in that
<miasma> the wiki should mention the name of the file for that board, assuming you use mainline kernels
<R0b0t1> Which page? I have a nanopi duo 2, didn't find it on wiki with my searches
<R0b0t1> Or well
clemens3 has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<R0b0t1> There is this with a very similar chip
<miasma> might be too new. no support yet. but some other dtb with the same SoC might work
<hanetzer> dtb is basically a big ol' struct, written to disk. that is all.
<miasma> it was just my initial guess if the kernel doesn't display anything via serial
<hanetzer> earlyprintk & console args, prolly.
<R0b0t1> Ok, I enabled early printk
