hey! just looking through H3 datasheet & Orange Pi Zero schematics... Is "UBOOT" CPU pin (ball w6) that famous "FEL button"? Also, there's a pullup on pin PL4 on OpiZero tagged as "RECOVERY", i suppose this one doesn't really have any special meaning and is just handled by android code, or whatever?

yes to #1

the second is handled by the bsp bootloader

otherwise it's just an ordinary GPIO

it's called Allwinner S3
<miasma>
shouldn't it be safe to enable the neon instructions in kernel mode for e.g. h3, KERNEL_MODE_NEON
<MoeIcenowy>
I verified the existence of I2S by check lichee/linux-3.4/drivers/clk/sunxi/clk-sun8iw8.c and found i2s
<miasma>
for some reason the defconfig doesn't enable them
<MoeIcenowy>
P.S. the SDC2 on S3 is now 8-bit wide, not the 1-bit wide one on V3s
<KotCzarny>
miasma: works for me (h3droid and armbian)
<miasma>
but the thumb instructions shouldn't be enabled ? i got some kernel errors after trying those
<willmore>
KotCzarny, sorry for the lag, just saw you mention me. I ordered the OpiZplus--the H5 variant of the plain OpiZ. I didn't order any dual ethernet boards. Oh, the board showed up yesterday and I put the experimental armbian build on it. It's a legacy kernel for now. Has lots of thermal issues.
<miasma>
KotCzarny: there's e.g. ARM_THUMBEE and THUMB2_KERNEL
Wizzup has joined #linux-sunxi
<KotCzarny>
willmore: vendor images are notoriously bad, did you try armbian?
<KotCzarny>
miasma: here:
<KotCzarny>
CONFIG_ARM_THUMB=y
<KotCzarny>
CONFIG_ARM_THUMBEE=y
<KotCzarny>
and no problems so far (few months already)
<miasma>
KotCzarny: hm, i got some problems alrady after 4 seconds of booting the kernel
<KotCzarny>
miasma: maybe it's userspace related?
<KotCzarny>
note: i'm using H3
<miasma>
i don't think so, i only booted the kernel with ip autoconfig, without /root or initramfs
<KotCzarny>
what errors do you get
<miasma>
i'll report back later today, can't remember atm
<miasma>
some kernel oops with stack trace
<miasma>
using 4.13-rc6
<miasma>
or rc7
<KotCzarny>
ahm. i'm using legacy here. though i also enable them on my a20(mainlines)
<MoeIcenowy>
montjoie: how to test whether sun4i-ss is working on a SoC?
<MoeIcenowy>
I think I'm going to test sun4i-ss on V3s
<MoeIcenowy>
according to datasheet it should be correct
<montjoie>
modprobe it, you should rapidly see if it works:)
<miasma>
KotCzarny: i guess they don't have any significant effect on anything. just noticed that i should avoid them in order to get some stability. i got the impression from the specs that those should be supported, but then again the defconfig doesn't enable them
<montjoie>
MoeIcenowy: at load, crypto api autotest some algos
<montjoie>
so the driver is used at load
<MoeIcenowy>
if I built-in it it will also do self-test?
<montjoie>
yes
<MoeIcenowy>
ok let me try
<montjoie>
when each algo is registred, tests are done
<MoeIcenowy>
and now we cannot assume sun8iw8 to have no external PHY...
<montjoie>
for most algos
<MoeIcenowy>
as S3 now exports external PHY interface
<montjoie>
MoeIcenowy: V3s will need mux
<MoeIcenowy>
but V3s cannot have external PHY
<MoeIcenowy>
S3 can
<montjoie>
V3s will have a mux... of one MDIO
<MoeIcenowy>
then in S3 DTSI if I include the V3s DTSI

hey guys! I’m kinda hitting a wall here…
<dFence>
I need to boot into an initrd, but I always get a nondescript kernel panic with my image; the same kernel but the debian-installer initrd works fine when built with the same mkimage parameters (http://linux-sunxi.org/Mainline_Debian_HowTo)
<dFence>
any ideas what could be wrong?
<inf>
Is there any sensible (even hardware-based) way to prevent H3 from booting off MMC0, while still being able to access it?

<smaeul>
dFence: how are you creating the initrd (before you pass it to mkimage)?
<smaeul>
inf: 1) use the u-boot pin to force fel boot or 2) use some hardware mechanism to disconnect mmc0 on power-up, and reconnect it from your boot software
<smaeul>
the boot order is fixed
<smaeul>
dFence: and you're passing the appropriate compression options to mkimage?
<dFence>
smaeul: yup, gzip: mkimage -A arm -O linux -T ramdisk -C gzip -a 0x43300000 -n "WOLPR" -d /home/delta/initrd.cpio.gz /home/delta/initrd.img
<smaeul>
since you're using an existing directory... make sure executable bits, symlink targets, and shebangs are appropriate
<smaeul>
and it would probably be helpful to pastebin the panic message
<dFence>
smaeul: I created the directory only to extract the root tarball into it
<inf>
smaeul: forgot to mention i'm booting from SPI flash, so FEL is a no-go. toggling mmc power separately sounds like a plan.
aidin has joined #linux-sunxi
<smaeul>
dFence: "root tarball" was this rootfs designed to be an initramfs? is there an executable /init? or is it /linuxrc or /sbin/init or something else?
<dFence>
smaeul: it’s /sbin/init (smylink to busybox)
<smaeul>
dFence: initramfs need init at /init

if you're using busybox's sysvinit a symlink should work

if it's a busybox shell script, a symlink should also work
