<naobsd> hmm
<naobsd> it seems there are a lot of changes in kernel source in Android SDK for A20

<megal0maniac> Hey. Quick question for anyone in the know. When buying a dev board, should one go for the A10 or A20? A20 is obviously more powerful and only increases price by USD8 or 9, but the A10 seems better supported and has more documentation
<megal0maniac> I'm looking at marsboard or cubieboard specifically. Both of them have identical A10 and A20 versions
<megal0maniac> I'm happy to spend the extra $ if it's worth it, don't want to regret my decision later on, but it doesn't make sense if the A20 lacks software support
dragonn has joined #linux-sunxi
<megal0maniac> Graphics acceleration in Android is quite important, as is use of the SATA port (not necessarily in Android, probably Debian or Arch)
<hramrach__> not sure what is the status of graphics (3d) on a20
<hramrach__> video accel should work on android as one of the main market is media boxes
<hramrach__> SATA works with the initial linux source drop so it should be workable
<hramrach__> as for a20 being more powerful I would not be so sure
<hramrach__> you can put 2-core in marketing materials
<hramrach__> but the frequency is lower
<hramrach__> the architecture is updated since a10 so some things may work better but the new core brings problems of its own
<oliv3r> wel, if ic an get some help today; i could submit the SID driver today; and it could get merged before tomorrow's merge window :)
<megal0maniac> So all in all, you'd suggest the A10? What is Linux support like in terms of things like video acceleration, TWI support etc?
<hramrach__> video acceleration is .. in progress since the chip was released
<hramrach__> some things work. some don't
<megal0maniac> Since I'm seeing no /serious/ benefits in getting the A20
<hramrach__> if you want to use a device right away a10 is better choice

<megal0maniac> Cool, thanks :) Seems as though the A10 is the way to go. A20 might gain support later, but for all we know it might never take off and given the lack of developer documentation...
<hramrach__> a20 will have more powerful 3d graphics if the driver is sorted out
<hramrach__> the 2 cores are more powerful for multitasking but single hand-optimized process would run better on the single core one
<hramrach__> the only problem with a20 vs a10 is driver license for 3d. video accel does not work yeat but it's probably going to be same half-broken blob as a10 has
<megal0maniac> Hmmm... The way I understood it, was that it has a Mali400 core as part of the SoC, and that driver issues were specific to the core, not the SoC itself
<megal0maniac> I am clearly mistaken :)
<megal0maniac> They're not much different in terms of architecture, right?
<hramrach__> a20 has a multicore mali so needs updated driver which was not released with license allowin use on allwineer devices
<megal0maniac> Meh :/
<megal0maniac> Multicore mali does sound great though
<hramrach__> also people report that a20 is running too hot
<hramrach__> did not observe any issues myself but did not like try to compile a kernel on it or something
<ssvb> hramrach__: no, it is not running too hot (only the speculation was that clocking it too high will probably make it hot)
<ssvb> hramrach__: the temperature is surely not a problem at 912MHz :)

<megal0maniac> I keep looking at the damn raspberry pi in between all of this research. The support base is so huge and driver support seems good. Except it's slower, no SATA, less RAM, no NAND and the A6 core isn't supported anymore
<megal0maniac> But it's tempting anyway
<megal0maniac> Anyone here have a marsboard?

<pacopad> Hi All
<pacopad> i'm trying to compile a 3.4.43 kernel and i got this message
<pacopad> drivers/video/sun7i/disp/OSAL/OSAL_Pin.c:53:5: error: implicit declaration of function 'sw_gpio_get_one_pin_status'

<hramrach__> try making the disp driver built-in
<pacopad> the dips is already builtin I'm my .config
<hramrach__> it works for me
<pacopad> do you have a working 3.4.43 kernel for a20 ?
<hramrach__> you probably have old version. or new
<hramrach__> it boots but has no ethernet so I trashed it
<pacopad> ok i see :)
