<wzyy2>
Jagan, that driver didn't work in 4.14.
<wzyy2>
Maybe i should find a time to update mainline kernel in yocto bsp to 4.14
<Ke>
does crypto engine work in 4.14
<Ke>
it was obviously broken earlier and did not work for me with Zain's patches, but perhaps upstream was in better condition
<wzyy2>
3288?3399?
<wzyy2>
4.4 or mainline?
<wzyy2>
Our guys decide to use 4.14 as the next kernel branch in bsp, so it seems we have push a lot of patches to mainline recently.
<Ke>
3288 mainline
<Ke>
I haven't used anything else than mainline
<Ke>
if nothing else works, I'll just use 4.9 until this device dies
<wzyy2>
haha, i think you can switch to 4.14
<Ke>
I should probably test again, yes
<Ke>
honestly there is hardly anything wrong with 4.9
<Ke>
perhaps I could use suspend, but I don't really need it
<Ke>
I guess I could want also 3.5mm audio outpur
lkcl has joined #linux-rockchip
<wzyy2>
Yeah, for rk3288, 4.14 actually don't have much differences with 4.9.
<wzyy2>
The only missing things are gpu/vpu.
<Ke>
sure, but that's a given
<Ke>
also the video decode unit is almost worthless in normal use, especially if you are not using mali blobs
<Ke>
if you don't you are better off optimizing the video out userland software stack
<Ke>
which is quite horrible
<Ke>
at least in debian stretch
<wzyy2>
I hope that people could use mainline kernel on rockchip Linux SDK(which are mostly about graphics/media) easily, but now it's still very difficult..
<wzyy2>
It think that out-of-tree repo like rockchip_forwardports are not maintainable.. Maybe i should remove it and use kernel fork from torvalds/linux directly.
<wzyy2>
I think

wzyy2: hi
<Ke>
wzyy2: would be lovely, if everyone worked on mainline kernel, but then again there's politics and congested maintainers
<Ke>
SDKs on the other hand are imo just a sign saying that we don't support mainline operating systems, use our hack instead
<wzyy2>
Haha, right, but in order to make all functions available, we have to to use those hack temporarily
<wzyy2>
rockchip don't have much hack in userland, most hack are moved to kernel.
<wzyy2>
that's why it's diffcult to use mainline kernel with all functions available.
<wzyy2>

wzyy2: well, I think forwardports is a good way if kernel has all needed APIs. if it doesn't... well you need to submit the missing APIs ;)
<phh>
wzyy2: I think the best way would be to have a tree with just bug fixes based on torvalds' + forwardports for driver not merged. this shows you care about mainline, without the various pains you might get from a true mainline
<phh>
best is if you have a bot rebasing on linux-next everyday and checking it still boots :P

I general I would say that mainline policies would nned to be fixed in order for linux to work as intended
<Ke>
and also SoC vendor attitudes would need to be fixed
lurchi__ is now known as lurchi_
<phh>
well I think rockchip's attitude is quite good those days
<phh>
well, the rebases are still very ugly
